I Got Rhythm - DECCA RE-MIXED VERSION - Judy Garland - Mickey Rooney - Tommy Dorsey - Girl Crazy

- "I Got Rhythm" - Girl Crazy 1943 - Cast Album 1944 - Director Busby Berkeley - Judy Garland - Mickey Rooney - Tommy Dorsey. From a separate recording session, Garland dubs for Garland in this video. CHANGES: The reprise in the Decca recording was moved forward to precede the instrumental section, as it does in the film. Also, a second reprise was mixed and appended as a finale, one with Garland in a duet with herself. Additionally, extra Garland vocals where dubbed in as backup singers in the counterpoint segue, which doesn't exist in the original Decca recording.

Yes, the director was known for being misogynistic and a drunk. I don't think Garland liked him. He turned women into wind-up dolls.

--- Hi, from The States. 🗽
This is pure talent. No auto tune, special effects, etc.
--- Yes, and they didn't do a lot of fast camera cutting from one shot to another. Performers were expected to go through long routines perfectly.
A beautiful and classic number performed by the legendary, adorable, very pretty, very intelligent, and extremely talented Judy Garland and the great Tommy Dorsey and his Orchestra! Judy Garland sings this song the best! The costumes, sets, hair, shoes, makeup are exceptional! Mickey Rooney is superb! Thank you for posting and sharing this wonderful video!
--- A friend suggested I post it...
This is from the play, later a movie, GIRL CRAZY. Thank you!
I got mon coeur!
If a person looks very carefully at the moves and steps Judy Garland was performing.
You can see she was trying to concentrate on the moves and steps by fellowing Micky Rooney.
Mickey Rooney was so relaxed and having fun, while she was nervous and medicated.
At the end of the musical number, listen to her voice and stare into those eyes. Very sad at what the industry did to that great star.
I think that was the routine to follow Mickey Rooney like a call and response.
She was a wreck because of Berkeley. Very poor choice to pair her with as a director for someone who was already fragile from being overworked.
Between the drugs and that jerk director, it exhausted her into a full on collapse doing this number.
It was during the filming of this number that Judy collapsed on the set, requiring her to take a rest of several weeks.

Yes. Judy is amazing no matter what she is doing. Bugsley Berkeley was a genius when it came to elaborate routines but I’m sorry , eveytime I see Girl Crazy all I hear is him screaming “eyes Judy, eyes. I gotta see your eyes” take after take after take until she passed out from exhaustion she was already feeling. Roger Edens gave the studio a multinatum: it’s either me or him. I guess they decided they wanted Eden’s more. Judy was back on the set in 3 weeks out of the six the doctors wanted. Amazing girl. Finished the film extraordinaire. She never got the rest she needed but she always cane back and worked her little heart out. Love that girl still❣️❣️❣️❣️❣️
I guess the Octomom was a multinatum.
The studio treated her like a puppet. However, there were several people out there who Judy always trusted were on her side..... Mickey, Roger Edens, or Arthur Freed. Her real "Wicked Witch" mother was a control freak and she was the one who really put her on the drugs in the first place.
Eyes Judy Eyes 😢
Love the ending

Judy paved the creative way for America and the world for Broadway and Hollywood. I think a lot of the producers and those with the money did not have the talent that the artists had. Here after Boys
I Love Judy!
--- Of course, you do...
Know what’s better than one Judy Garland?
TWO Judy Garlands!
Great remix.
I only did the duet dub because I was stuck. I had moved the pop-record's reprise to precede it's instrumental section, because that's the way it was in the movie, but then I was left with no ending vocal. I knew the finale vocal had to be bigger than the preceding vocal sections (because that was 1940's formula), so... I wanted more counterpoint and harmony in the duet, but it's hard working with dead people. You may be interested to know that the last word "More" on the last note of the video is actually part of the word "Door" on one of the Garlands. I wanted to create more harmony (like you have in your a cappella) by having one of the Garlands jump up an octave, so I glued on part of the word "Door" from an earlier section where she jumped an octave.
Brian Lee I actually did notice that at the end, but it didn’t really matter to me. I’m actually surprised you’ve looked at MY videos.
Why wouldn't I watch your videos? You're talented. You sing on pitch-----that is, unless you're using pitch enhancement software. I have copies of the movies 'Moonlight Bay' and 'By The Light Of The Silvery Moon' at home. Also an elderly organist friend of mine liked your videos----older folks aren't familiar with the effects you can do with audio/visual and are impressed by them.
Brian Lee I’m actually not using any software. Just an app on my iPad that can record four different tracks. I may tamper with the volume at times but that’s about it.
Well, I envy you then that you have perfect pitch. They threw me out of the glee club. I never sang again, but I do play piano at church----which is enough musical contribution..

@@eveinacio4106 --- Copy/paste can be tricky.
I like the song a lot, but this makes me feel so bad for Judy. The director pushed so hard on her that she literally collapsed to the ground. Heck, she looks both scared and high rather than cheerful.
Garland did sign up for it, though. Some reports say that she liked looking girlish, and since she was thrown on stage at the age of 2 and expected to perform as part of her family's entertainment business, she likely had little choice but to stay in the cutthroat leagues of entertainment as an adult.
Wow ! She a dream gal .

I love watching this more and more, with all the care, love and time that went into syncronizing all Judy's with everything. Berkeley dnacers make a great background visually, but the noises the guns, and the excessive dancers made were horribly distracking, it was sheer brilliance to change all of that into a vocal double dose of Judy. This shortened version is far superior visually and vocally then what the alcoholic screamer berkely did on film.
Recently, a commenter said it was hideous --- asked why I mucked with Busby Berkeley's film version, why I didn't let the Berkeley version stand on it's own merit. I explained to him that this was a separate performance of the song than that heard in the movie, that the performers had to run over to the Record Studio and record the cast-album versions of songs after recording the Film Studio versions, that the technology didn't exist for duplicating film soundtracks and distributing them to the general public, that pop records had to be made by the Record Studios with no technological hooks into the Film Studios' soundtracks. People don't understand today that there was a time when you couldn't duplicate and distribute audio with the click of a button --- which now any ten-year-old can do. So, the early cast albums were always manufactured from separate performances than those heard in the films. The commenter deleted his comment once he understood.
@@BrianLee6492 you should tell the commenter to watch Judy's version of A Star is Born, to understand how difficult it was to make a film in those days. I think Chuck Walters used to tern "grueling excitement with never a moment to rest when you made a film back then"
This was when Metro thought it could make Tommy Dorsey into a star in his own right. He let himself and his men be dressed up to look like idiots, though perhaps a bespectacled cowpoke is better than his 18th century court garb in 'DuBarry Was a Lady'.
I read every post and nobody talk about George and Ira Gershwin who wrote this fabulous song! What a shame!
I actually like this remix version better than the original -Busby Berkeley did way too much over the top with these kinds of super extended over populated routines. Who was, it Ann Miller? who said that Berkeley had no talent, all he had to do was look through a kaleidoscope to create those huge dance scenes. Judy is the shining star here and she doesn't need all the complicated routines of 1000 other dancers all over the place.
--- Yes, most accounts of Berkely say he was a bully, a task master, a drunk, misogynistic and inhumane----- and very mechanical----he hobnobbed with the technicians and treated the performers like machines.
I noticed a blooper.
On a couple of occasions, the mouths of the background singers are moving, but nothing is coming out of their mouths. This is particularly noticeable from 1:53 to 2:05
--- It's supposed to be that way. The audio is from the record album, which was a different performance from that in the film. At that point in history, they didn't have the ability to clone film soundtracks onto record albums.
@BrianLee6492 very interesting.
I'll see if I can watch the movie again. It'll be interesting to hear the differences.
