    The best part I love about the krio language is that it sounds southern in many different ways. Where I'm from in Louisiana, a lot of our grandparents sounded the same so its easier to understand. Our grandparents said the same thing when someone knocked on the door. Good video

      Yes! I was saying the same thing! My grandparents said some of these things they just spoke a bit slower, and had a different accent but they would say some of the same things! And even some of the culture that they used to do that we don't see anymore, is still done in Africa. Like eating red clay or chalk. Now people say it's weird but back in the day my Grandma would tell us about it! I started really doing a deep dive into my African heritage, and I'm really coming to the conclusion that our ancestors only let the white man think he erased Africa from us while we just kept being ourselves. Because a lot of our soul food is inspired by African foods! From the mustard based barbeque sauce, to the jerk seasoning in Jamaica and the gumbo we enjoy, we just used the ingredients we had available to recreate our foods! And we kept doing a lot of our culture in secret! We may switch our goats for pigs, and switch from indigenous religion to Christianity, but many of our traditions have deep African roots! Even the way we speak! I wish I could hear my grandparents voices again. I miss them and their wisdom every day!

    It sounds a lot like Gullah and Geechee. I can understand almost everything perfectly, I can't speak it but I can understand a lot of what is being said. In Gullah we have nyam=food/eat
    Fi=for
    Lili=little
    gyal/gal=girl
    churn/chillun=children
    Yonduh=over there
    Yard=here/domestic/home grown/local
    Bukruh=white person
    Kootuh=turtle
    Tahnum hide=get a woopin
    Ackin up=hurting/acting up/misbehaving
    Cra5rck teet=crack teeth, have a conversation.
    Crossed the river=passed away
    And we like to replace t's with k's a lot. So street would be pronounced street, trees is pronounced krees. But it's not always the case. What's crazy is that my family is very mixed heritage, but mostly black on my father's side, but with some Hawaiian an entry, and my Mom is Korean. So I'm always code switching all the time. Because my dad was in the military we didn't get to live very close with my dad's immediate family for the first 11 years of my life. But I did get to know my Hawaiian distant relatives. So when I came to the states at 11 I had a hard time understanding my grandparents, but quickly caught on, due to understanding Hawaiian pidgin. So I can speak Hawaiian pidgin, and understand Gullah and say some words, I can also understand Krio, which surprised me. When I went to Jamaica I found it very easy to understand people and felt like it was home! I also know some Korean and Japanese as I took Japanese in highschool, and learned Korean from my mother. And my God mother is Sāmoan and so is my Husband so I speak Sāmoan on a basic level as well as Hawaiian, some Tongan words and other Polynesian words. I'm trying to learn Igbo and some yoruba as I want to pass the knowledge on to my descendants. But I love the fact that as Black people despite our different locations we still think alike in many ways! Words like Sabi, pikin or pikny I automatically understood. I just love how many of us were taken from the homeland but they couldn't erase Africa from our souls. They couldn't silence the voices of our ancestors and their presence in our lives! We are so blessed!

      Crack teet definitely tickles me , I’m Jamaican American , Love to watch Nolkywood movies and I’m intrigued where do ppl speak Gullah, some of those terms you shared definitely sounds familiar to my ears being grown in A patois speaking household .

    Krio is a Pidgin English and that is what has become the lingua franca in Nigeria through Yoruba returned slaves from Sierra Leone.
