I think I've heard his name pronounced "kway-ar". I'm not a native Spanish speaker, nor am I Argentinian. I am just a red-blooded white man who is mortified by the conduct and ignorance of the MAGAs on virtually every single front they've taken. As for whether Cuellar is a Democrat or Republican, I don't care. If he gets indicted, certain steps must be taken, as laid out by many decades of precedent. If he gets convicted, he loses. That's how it's supposed to be in this country, whether you're on the street, or living in a Florida Ivory Tower.

If this is true that Henry Cuellar did what he and his wife has been indicted for in court, then hold him and his spouse accountable to the full extent of the law. That said, I'm not quick to jump on someone without knowing all the facts of a situation (whether it's corruption or whatever), but I also don't defend someone who clearly does wrong too.

If I remember correctly the Mexican alphabet uses the double l(ll) as it's own letter called "elle". So they have L(ele) and Ll(elle). I'm in his district. We almost voted him out last November. His name as he pronounces it is Cueyar
I was taught that "LL" in Spanish is always an English "y" sound. I found out later in life that my USA Spanish classes were Mexican slanted and that there were different words and pronounciations elsewhere. Especially noticeable vs Spain or a place like Argentina. There is also an attitude that comes with it. Very comparable to British vs USA English.
I'm from Texas. We say that as Quay-yar. Maybe that's not proper Spanish but that is Texas Spanish.

I’m learning Mexican Spanish and would have guessed that his name is pronounced “coo EH yar ” based on the double ‘L’ and tendency to put the accent on the penultimate syllable.
But, when it comes to people’s names, I learned decades ago that you pronounce their name how they want it pronounced. I had a friend whose last name was “Marquis” and having French Canadian relatives I assumed it was “mar KEY” only to be told that they said it the Anglicized way: “MAR kwis.”
So it would be best to find some of Cuéllar’s old campaign ads to see how that name is pronounced. Oh, look - autocorrect put the accent where I thought it went!
