    Arceus is so underrated, especially now that Scarlet & Violet have come out. I loved it from the very beginning. I logged over 540 hours in this game, I just adored all the catching mechanics (as I always enjoyed collecting over the battling), and loved the liked mechanics. Shiny hunting is a pleasure and I just love the world. Main series Pokemon games have lost my interest but if there's a Legends sequel on the horizon I'll be there day 1.

      I loved it too! I'm cautiously hopeful that we'll get similar games, perhaps in the "Legends" series. I would love a Hoenn one, Gen 3 had a lot of really interesting lore (and it was also the first Gen I seriously played as a kid)

      I would have vastly preferred a nice DLC for Arceus over Scarlet and Violet. I think maybe they didn't have any DLC for Arceus obviously because the new games were coming out later in the year but also it seems they clearly didn't have enough development support. Arceus world is lacking but looks so much better to me in every way including it's art style. I love the game but it was clear to many reviewers that Arceus felt a bit empty and the trees a bit sparse but overall it is enjoyable. So moving onto an even bigger set of games with a larger world. I think Arceus was looked at as a preview of what Scarlet and Violet would be like and many people thought Scarlet and Violet would look better and play better but in hindsight I prefer 90% of Arceus qualities, mechanics, style, etc. over S&V. In hindsight Arceus was a bit of a red flag though at the time it seemed a beacon of hope.

    • @rambo_ando
      @rambo_ando Před rokem +6

      I'd argue that Arceus is less underrated now that people have realised how janky ScarVi looks by comparison. Arceus is a work of art 😝

    My Story with Live A Live was very unique before I ever played it.
    Why?
    I first learned of this game's existence by reading the article in Regionlocked (the book, not the YT Series, though the makers are the same) and literally two days later this HD2D Remake was announced.
    What are the odds for that to happen?

    I like the visuals of Tunic. It would be fun to take the animation and visual style of DB Fighters Z and apply that to a side scroller, like that Dragon Ball GBA game, but much lighter on the _learning curve._ A game that lets me soak in some anime-style vitamin-d without the workout.
    Edit: Merry Christmas, Happy New Year!

    I was playing Sonic Frontiers handheld while I watched this; I'm loving it. The boss battles give me huge Metal Gear Rising vibes. The convenience of the Switch port of NieR: Automata finally got me to finish the game after trying to get into it several times on PC. Pokémon Legends: Arceus felt like what the series is supposed to be.

      @MorningAndEveningStar Před rokem

      @@philipsparks6089 my save file is over 14 hours right now, and I'm not even through the third island zone yet. And I'm not even doing anywhere near a completionist route trying to master every digital stage. So I'm satisfied with the length. Worth $60 USD I'd say, but especially worth the $40 it's been on sale lately for. But whenever you get it, I bet you'll have a blast :)

      @calcium1716 Před rokem

      @@MorningAndEveningStar How is the performance on Switch? I think I'm going to pick it up regardless but i'm interested to hear if any technical hiccups have affected your enjoyment of it

    • @MorningAndEveningStar
      @MorningAndEveningStar Před rokem

      @@calcium1716 honestly I have no major gripes. I've even been playing handheld most of the time. It doesn't look as good as say PS5 or PC, of course, but if you're willing to accept the graphical downgrade and some slightly longer load times that we've all become accustomed to with Switch ports, then by all means get it. I wanted some handheld Sonic-otherwise I'd have gotten the PC version-and it took me no time at all to get used to presentation. I was very concerned about the Switch version, worried about wasting money after hearing about all the issues, but turns out I was worried for nothing. And nothing about significant frame rate drops sticks out in my mind.
      The infamous pop-in present on every system was a little annoying at first, and the grass loading in only a few feet away, but I mostly stopped registering it by the end of the tutorial area. For me now pop-in is virtually only a problem when I'm zooming around the zones really fast looking for stuff to do, but then everything's a blur anyways at high speeds, so I'm going more by geography and landmarks than floating platforms. Load times between zones and stages are longer than I'd like; I haven't timed them, but I'd say they feel like maybe 15-20 seconds usually? But their length is somewhat masked because of the option to practice combos on training dummies while loading. And Sonic can go really fast in this game, so really my biggest issue in this has been making sure I'm not zooming so fast that I don't fly off a rail and miss a homing dash onto a spring because I'm reacting too slowly.
      It's perfectly playable. I'd give it a 7 or even 8 out of 10. It feels like my memories of Sonic Adventure (although I suspect not how I'd feel about SA if I booted it up today). A lot of rough edges on the gameplay end, but it's so ambitious.
      Ultimately, only you can decide if it's acceptable for you, as cliché as it is, but I know I'm glad I got the Switch version, even though I'm missing out on mods. I'm not usually someone who gets worried about video game performance on Switch, although I was getting mighty concerned about Sonic Frontiers leading up to having it in my hands, but I'm happy I was worried for nothing. And I've been finding it feels more pleasant performance-wise than Xenoblade Chronicles 2, so maybe that's a better metric.
      Oh, the lava textures look pretty awful, though. And I've learned I'm rather poor at pinball.
      I hope that helps a little bit. Merry Christmas!
      (Oh, and the dialogue for leveling up Sonic's speed and ring capacity is painfully slow. PC lets you mod that out.)

Went around the world, found some areas that were to early for me to explore, eventually found the right path fought a Stone Guardian a few hours later a Mechanical Giant Spider and then i stopped playing...... i got frustrated with no idea where to go next, i looked everywhere i my abilities allowed to go to the point that those early high lvl places i found were now a piece of cake. But nothing, no new weapons so i could progress to unreachable areas, can't find the next dungeon and the only place i found that i could walk around in and make some progress was the Quarry but bc all shrines are broken or shut off there it made progressing really hard. So i got frustrated and dropped it, but maybe now it is time to give it another shot, though i won't be against anyone "pointing me" in the right direction?

I mean it’s not that games fault but the Switch was being bought buy a wider selection of the population since it’s release. Pokemon is NOT a game for non-gamers. I’d argue Pokemon games are the most “video gamey” series Nintendo makes. Not exactly Wii Sports.

    Okay, thanks for the recommendations. I may pick up Tunic. I picked up my first Switch this year and the game I’ve played the most (according to the Nintendo end of year wrap-up) was Wolfenstein: Youngblood. The most hated game is my _absolute favorite shooter_ on any platform. I try to _avoid_ fights in both Dooms, I go _looking for fights_ in Youngblood (at similar difficulty settings too), then Apex Legends, which was my favorite before discovering Youngblood. I won’t count the shameful Mortal Kombat 11 (which is the third most played on that Nintendo end of year list). Any influencer that gave that Acclaim/Midway caliber port of a game _a pass_ should be put on some sort of watch list…. the _other kind_ of watch list…. So you can simply replace the Switch port of MK11 with Warframe. Youngblood, Apex Legends, Warframe and my recent favorite Crisis 3 _all_ put Mortal Kombat 11 for Switch to shame. I was so disgusted I finally banished that port to my spare SD card and sealed it away, back to the Netherrealm! _Forever!_ Now my Switch collection looks _pristine_ and _impressive._ If only I could seal away the busted joycons. May those never return to _any_ new iteration of the Switch hardware.
    Great Stuff, as always!

Just keep in mind that the gameplay isn’t at Automata levels, which is a shame. It’s like a 10/10 story in a 7/10 game. Though I think there’s a chance it’ll help you love Automata even more. Be sure to play to Ending E, and yes it’s a bit of a slog…and so worth it.

    My top 5 Switch games for 2022 are in no particular order - Fire Emblem Warriors Three Hopes. This is my favorite musou crossover game so far. It blends the two franchises very well. Pokémon Legends Arceus. This game represented the shakeup to the formula that I was craving. I liked being able to catch Pokémon without having to battle it. I loved how you could finally freely swap known Pokémon moves without having to go to a tutor/move deleter/heart stones etc. Xenoblade Chronicles 3 - I’ve tried to play the past games. This is the first Xenoblade game I have ever finished. The story is engaging and emotional. The combat is excellent, and this coming from someone who prefers turn by turn in RPGs. Finally there’s the music. The music is some of the best I have ever heard in a game. Splatoon 3 - so yes, in many ways, it is more of the same, but it does enough for me to keep playing. It’s just fun even if I lose five turf wars in a row. TMNT Shredder’s Revenge. This was a nostalgic trip for me. When I saw that opening, my inner 8 - 10 year old had the biggest smile. Let’s not forget that’s it’s actually a fun game to play

      Your list reinforces my feeling that this year has been incredibly weak one for Nintendo. I know a statement like that is always subjective but think about that list. Pokémon, a series that is going after a very specific audience (I’ll be kind and not say what kind I think). XC3, albeit a good RPG but an RPG all the same that doesn’t even sell very well (which, again, caters to a very specific audience). Splatoon 3, a game that no one asked for. In a world where we haven’t seen a new Mario game, TotK is taking a ridiculous amount of time, and the sequel to Pikmin has been 10 years in the making, a sequel for an online shooter does exist. It’s a great series but it’s very clear Splatoon 3 was a modest upgrade to Splatoon 2. And TMNT… that’s a good game but has nothing to do with Nintendo.
      I just hope Nintendo doesn’t keep doing what they are doing: hitting cruise control because they are rolling in 3rd party fees. This happened during the later half of the Wii too. For the common gamer, this year was not good.

      You do realize there are people out there that are not fans of Pokemon games right? I’ve been gaming for 30+ years and have tried Pokemon only once. I booted it up, realized it was an RPG with a bunch of cute made up animals, and got bored.
      Arceus looks like a GREAT game for existing Pokémon fans… and they are the ones who bought it. The reason it’s a great game for existing fans? Game Freak finally changed some very small aspects to the game after essentially selling people the same game for 20 years.
      I’m glad you enjoyed it but jeez… this is why people find Pokémon fans to be insufferable at times. There’s a complete lack of perspective with those games. It’s actually kind of astonishing. It truly feels like people were brainwashed during their youth and never stopped being infatuated with the series. I’ve basically never known anyone who likes Pokemon who didn’t play it as a chid.
      I’m glad you like it but come on now. Arceus isn’t exactly changing the gaming world. Have you played Outer Wilds? Now *that* is a game I feel bad for anyone who’s never played it.

    Of these 5 games, Tunic is one I plan to pickup. The Zelda similarities, from what I'm told, stop at the character with sword and shield on an adventure. Heard the rest of the game is more like a Dark Souls-like, as far as combat goes. I'm also unsure if it has dungeons, like Zelda games usually have.

    • @leeartlee915
      @leeartlee915 Před rokem +1

      It’s a well made game but I quit it after about 5 hours. I don’t know if you watch AVGN but it is the quintessential “where the fuck do I go now?” kind of game. To be fair, that’s by design but I’ve been playing games for 30+ years and I know my way around a map. But there are moments in that game where it asks a lot of its player to “just figure it out”.
      Having said all that, I can see how that would be appealing to some people. I guess I’m just over being frustrated with games in that way.

    • @Lord_Mangoat
      @Lord_Mangoat Před rokem

      @@leeartlee915 I played a DS game that was similar in which it didn't have a quest log or anything, so if you put the game down for any amount of time & forgot what the NPCs told you to do next, you'd probably have to start the game over, unless you wanted to roam around a lot. It was a space game... anyway, I loved that game and the lack of a list of what to do next kept me engaged in the game, so I never put it down to play anything else. I expect I'd get the same feel from Tunic.

    • @leeartlee915
      @leeartlee915 Před rokem

      @@Lord_Mangoat Yeah, I agree with everything you said. It’s *definitely* one of those games that if you walk away, you’re screwed. Given how much life is these days, it’s pretty hard to commit that hard to any game, no matter how much I like it. The only exceptions are games I can power through (e.g. RE2 remake I played over two nights…. and then I played the B scenario immediately afterwords). In general, that’s why I’ve had to give up the dream that I will ever play an RPG game again. I remember starting Fallout New Vegas when it came out, life happened, and when I came back I was faced with a choice: start over or walk away.
      Heck, these days, I get confused with even less mentally demanding games. I bought Luigi’s Mansion 3 at launch, played it, loved it, and got pulled away to other things. When I came back to it this Oct, I was like “whatever, this game is so short I’ll just start again”.
      As I said to begin with, Tunic is clearly a “good game”. But it’s also a game that is NOT for everyone (and I know, you could say that about any game but I think the audience for Tunic is even more narrow than most). I hope you enjoy it and get wrapped up into it’s very compelling world.

    Enjoyed Legends Arceus with its open world gameplay with Pokémon the right kind of game for it and creative concepts. I do prefer Scarlet and Violet with it being an actual new generation based game, closer to the mainline games and easier to play (as I do find Legends Arceus frustrating at times) but still, Legends Arceus is still a great game for its own innovative ideas and opening the door for the new direction of Pokémon.
