Rakaia Commercial Vehicle Safety Centre

Here’s a look at the first commercial vehicle safety centre (CVSC) in Rakaia, south of Christchurch. Rakaia sits between one of New Zealand’s largest agricultural hubs, and the Christchurch ports, with a high concentration of freight and heavy vehicles travelling in this area every day.
We’ve installed in-road scales and number plate recognition cameras on State Highway 1 either side of the centre. These screen heavy vehicles as they drive past, checking for vehicle compliance. Any potentially unsafe vehicles are directed into the centre to be inspected by Police.
This CVSC is one of 12 being built as part of the Commercial Vehicle Safety Programme (CVSP), which will monitor heavy vehicles across the country 24/7 and provide us data on operator and truck behaviour such as heavy vehicle weight, load status, and driver fatigue.
