How to make and use water-soluble calcium

  • Materials Needed:
    Eggshells
    Vinegar (acetic acid)
    Mortar and pestle
    Pan
    Spoon
    Glass jar with a lid
    Mesh strainer
    Steps:
    Collect Eggshells: Gather clean eggshells from eggs that you have used for cooking. Make sure to remove any residual egg contents by gently rinsing the shells with water.
    Break Eggshells: Crush the eggshells into smaller pieces using a mortar and pestle or by carefully breaking them with a kitchen tool. The smaller the pieces, the better they will react with the vinegar.
    Roast the Eggshells: Place the crutches eggshells on a pan on high heat. Roast the eggshells until you start to feel the smell of burnt hair.
    Place Eggshells in a Jar: Place the crushed and roasted eggshell pieces into a glass jar or container. You don't need to fill the container completely.
    Add Vinegar: Pour vinegar (acetic acid) into the jar, covering the eggshells. The vinegar will react with the calcium carbonate present in the eggshells, producing calcium acetate, water, and carbon dioxide gas.
    Let it React: Cover the jar with a lid (don’t seal) and allow the eggshells to react with the vinegar for several days. Place the jar in a well-ventilated area as carbon dioxide gas will be produced during the reaction.
    Filter the Solution: After the reaction is complete, strain the solution to remove the solid eggshell remnants. You can use a mesh strainer to separate the liquid from the solids. The solids can go to your compost.
    Usage: Calcium is an essential nutrient for plants, aiding in cell wall formation and overall plant growth. You can use the calcium acetate solution as a calcium supplement for your plants. Dilute the solution with water in a 1:1000 ratio and apply it to your plants.
