    Hey all,
I'm new to Rugby, so I'm trying to watch as much as I can to understand it. One thing I don't understand is why during a scrum, some players are hitting (or smacking/chopping) other players arms? I'd like to understand what's the point of it? Is it frustration? Trying to stop the other player from holding on?
Thanks for helping me understand this wonderful and awesome sport!

You have to touch to set up the scrum and bind to your opponent, I played prop and a dirty trick everyone uses is to pull down on your opponent's shoulder to destabilise him, this often results in slapping lol.

Well, bit of a late reply but if you're a prop you often hold on to the opposition flankers to stop them breaking off once the ball is out. Slows them up a bit and can give your backs a bit more space, but obviously they don't like it and walloping the prop's arm is one way to persuade the prop to let go.

Almost all scrums resulted in penalties and points which would've been different if the scrums was uncontested. Yes but we had enough quality to keep up the intensity. Dan Cole played little rugby when he had to replace Sinckler and it showed (that bald head sticking up everytime under pressure). I almost felt sorry for them. Im just glad it didn't go to uncontested scrums because South Africa would've looked like Thor fighting without access to his hammer. The Italian game was a no contest but they should really not be able to do that, that is actually what I'm trying to get at.

SA world cup final - complete one-off performance. Granted - if you're going to pull a rabbit out of the hat - then you want to do it at the final.
Not salty - they won fair and square but they played nobody of note in their jog to the final. England on the other hand....just a bridge too far on the day. If they had to play SA now (or then) in a series - you wouldn't put your krugerands on SA to win it (objectively speaking of course). That said - for sheer freakish ability SA's winger does things that shouldn't be possible and their scrum half for my mind is world class. Oh - and Louw is a legend of the game. Coach ain't bad too.. they're a good outfit - just not consistently world class like the ABs or England.
