Sage / Breville Bambino Plus Review Part 5. Purging the Steam Wand

  • In this video, I'm answering the question that was asked in the comments to my main Sage Bambino Plus review video about purging the steam wand.
    Someone mentioned that it looked like I'd deliberately cut part of the video in order to hide the fact that it's not possible to purge the steam wand prior to steaming without ending up with water being purged into your milk.
    I responded to say this wasn't the case, but that you can actually purge the steam wand, and that I'd record a video showing how it's done, so that's what I've done this video.
    Basically, if you press the steam button to purge the wand of any water before steaming, if you let the steam flow for around 5 seconds, the machine thinks it has gone into the full steam cycle and will purge again when you lift the wand to put the milk jug down onto the temp sensor, putting water into your milk.
    So to purge the wand without this happening, you just have to stop the steam before this point, which as I say is about 4/5 seconds. Just press the steam button, and as soon as water has stopped flowing and the steam starts (a second or so) press the button again to stop, put your milk jug down, push the wand back down, and it won't do the auto purge.

    I have struggled the last month trying to purge before I steam my milk and sometimes it worked and sometimes it would be full of water. The four second rule really helped and loved being able to visually see it. I can’t believe the manufacture’s printed instructions are so poor, not to include what you taught us in this video. Thank You!!!

    I'm honoured you made this due to my bitching😂 only just found the video. I think I've got an even better work around. Press the steam button to purge, now you can leave it on until the steam flows dry (over 3 seconds), now slide the drip tray out and put your milk jug under without moving the wand, put the tray back on while Holding the jug and press steam again. It ain't so pretty but better results for Latte art. Love your uploads 👌

    I've just done this - great. I manually steam - and tried it with the wand out - it appeared to me that if you purge into an empty vessel it doesn't seem to matter how long as the wand is out. I may be wrong. Either way another great tip - didn't realise how much water was coming out into the milk !!

    I just got a Bambino Plus. Much enjoyed your video. Mine does not appear to have the hot water-through-wand feature, by the way. Mine seems to have a bit of problem with purging, and with the steam wand in general. It seems to make the texture just fine, but it never heats the milk enough. I used a thermometer to check, and it never exceeds 30ºC before stopping. It then claims to be blocked. It never automatically purges. I've taken the tip off and cleaned it several times, including with the tool under the water reservoir, but it doesn't help, and the same thing happens. Anyone got any suggestions, or is my machine faulty?

    I have the bambino now for 7 months, and the amount of foamed milk is reduced now. I did the descaling and backflushing procedure. With the backflushing I didn't put hot water in the tank. Should I do that? I also cleaned the steam wand with the pin.
    Do you have any other tips? It would really help me out! Thanks in advance!!

    Can you do a video on how to pull a good shot from this machine? I bought the bambino two weeks ago and still struggle to pull a decent shot. My ratio from input/output coffee liquid is pretty high. Could you give us a good recipe for your specific coffee?

    • @marcusannegarn8497
      @marcusannegarn8497 Před 4 lety +5

      There is no one setting that works. Dialling in Espresso is a learning curve. It took me a long time to get semi confident at it.
      Even now I often pull sub par shots but I find they taste good with milk haha.
      Remember to use good water ( e.g filtered or soft bottled water). Also you get best results with a proper espresso grinder and fresh beans.
      Here is what I have to say about it
      --------------------------------------------------------------
      One thing to remember is that grinding too fine actually causes underextraction due to channeling
      I highly recommend starting off too coarse and aiming for 18 g of coffee in to 36 g of water out in about 20-25 second.
      (You absolutely need a scale btw)
      then tighten the grind by one or two clicks and go again.
      if your distribution is good, this should make the coffee taste better.
      if you start too fine you will inevitably get uneven flow and channeling. This will lead to localised over extraction in the channels thus bitterness. You will however severely under extract the rest of the puck.
      focusing on even distribution + using a scale for consistency is essential.
      I find that those spinny distribution tools are very helpful.
      using a chopstick or toothpick (or WDT tool) to remove clumps in the puck before distribution is also useful.

      I've been having similar issues, using a single wall double basket. Was running really quickly even with very fine grind. I've started to get better results by filling the basket to max (19-20g); I believe more coffee mass also helps increase the pressure and yields a slower shot, but would also be keen on your expert opinion.

    • @matinb449
      @matinb449 Před 4 lety

      marcus annegarn thanks for your advice. Do you have this machine too? I tried too get too 20-25 seconds including preinfusion time but I fail whatever I do. I fill up the double basket and tamper it pretty strong around 18kg force. I use the trimming tool included to remove the extra coffee. If I aim for 34g of liquid with 17g of coffee it takes around 17 seconds.

    • @matinb449
      @matinb449 Před 4 lety +1

      Jonathan M how much liquid do you get out of the 19-20 basket? And do you adjust the liquid amount manually or use the preset amount?

    • @marcusannegarn8497
      @marcusannegarn8497 Před 4 lety

      @@matinb449
      It is possible your coffee is too coarse then.
      Are you grinding the beans yourself or using pre ground?
      If you can not grind finer then try using the double walled (pressurised basket )

    Dear Coffee Kev; I´m having an issue with my Sage Bambino Plus and i´m desperat for finding a solution due to the fact that it´s only about 2 1/2 years old. So, thought I might try to ask you whether you can help me fix the issue. I´ve done both cleaning cycles but when I turn it on and try to make a cup of coffee it stops immediately after I push the botton. And i have the same issue with the steamer. It stops after 1 second. Can you help? Thanks for your great videos!!!

    • @Coffee_Kev
      @Coffee_Kev  Před 3 lety

      Hi Dirk. As long as you do it straight away after purging, you've already purged the water out of the wand, so you'll just get steam straight away, no water.

  • @Rogelio_007
    @Rogelio_007 Před 3 lety

    Oddly enough, mine stopped purging. I did a factory reset and it didn't fix it. 1) i filled the milk cup to the first line 2) let it auto steam 3) removed cup after completion 4) pushed milk wand back for purge, but no purge happens 5) The steam button appears off 6) I push and hold the darkened steam button for about 3 seconds, which THEN purges. Anyone else have this weird issue?

    not sure if I understand this, if start your steam and than turn it off before the 5 seconds so that you don't get the water that comes out before the steam and also the water that comes after to clean it, and than You get your milk in, once you start steaming your milk , would it not do the same thing as in shooting water before steam, again?

    • @Coffee_Kev
      @Coffee_Kev  Před 4 lety +1

      As long as you stop it before about 5 seconds when it goes into full steaming, it's hot enough so there's no more water to come out of the wand, it's steam at that point - but also the machine doesnt think you've done a full steaming cycle so it doesnt try to go into the auto purge.
