First off, that's a Hurst shifter. They're used for drag racing.
Second, Mercury was a competitor for Buick. More luxury than Ford, but not as much as Lincoln. Mid-range luxury if you will.

Fun fact i actually know the guy that owns the Cyclone Spoiler II, he hasn't driven it in 10 years due to some body damage and has been trying to find someone to remake the front nose cone.
The 8.9L DSC V8 is actually a real thing. It's a 540ci Merlin V8 used in monster trucks running on methanol. FYI: DSC is displacement supercharger, in this case, a big Roots blower.

It was a strong competitor in the Nascar circuits and was third popular with drivers back in the 70s.

In 1970, Mercury built 1,631 of these Cyclone Spoilers. A total of 341 1970 Spoilers were built with the 429SCJ (Super Cobra Jet) and either the Drag Pak or Super Drag Pak rear axle ratio.

That's what i thought too. Got a 3 or 4 gear drag tune RWD for the Supra MK4 and it does launch amazingly!

The car you showed was actually a cyclone spoiler II long nose, it was going to be used for the next year in nascar, but wasn't due to a rule change, they made i think about 1100 standard nose cyclone spoiler IIs , as well as the sister car the Torino Talladega

I am so happy for this model in FH5. it's a Hurst shifter; an option in 1971 Ford did made a King Cobra Torino with the BOSS 429; I think. In original format the 1970-71 Ford Torino/Cyclone 429 Drag Pack could do 13 seconds...

Love the videos, question though. You refer to the wheel spacers (when you widen the stance) on a rear wheel drive car especially, as engine spacers. They are not engine spacers.

I know several people who have gear shifters in their classic Muscle cars that are just like the one in the Cyclone. and my grandpa had a 68' Cyclone GT 390 with a four speed, which is such a rare car that you can't find them anywhere. *I've only seen one in person, ever*

Nick, some of the other muscle cars have that 8.9 liter engine as a swap. Including the Holdens!!!

The Mercury Cyclone is not related to the Mustang. That was the Cougar. The Cyclone's closest relative is the Ford Torino.

Mercury did not go bankrupt. FoMoCo phased Mercury out to focus on marketing Ford and Lincoln models, just as Chrysler Corp did with Plymouth and GM did with Pontiac and Oldsmobile.

If your car's got a supercharged V8 then the thing is supposed to be real. Just make sure to make the upgrades accurate so that it actually sounds like it has a supercharger too
