The meaning of the mantra captures the entirety of all religions and spirituality, and is often overlooked. Om is the primordial vibration of the universe, it is the sound of one hand clapping. From this unstruck sound comes all other secondary movements and vibrations, and that's how all creation, preservation and destruction occurs and the universe is in a constant flux. But the om remains constant and unchanging throughout in and through everything. Mani means jewel. The mantra is saying that om is the only jewel in existence, all other riches fall short of om because they have all borrowed their lustre from om itself. So attachment to possessions and lust drops once we understand that om is the only jewel. Padme means lotus. Lotus is metaphor for the mind. The lotus blooms from murky and stagnant water. Similarly, the mind blooms and becomes conscious and self-aware from stupour and like that negative emotions which stem from selfishness are overcome when the mind expands beyond the ego. We must not reject or repress our negativities, we must only become aware of them and acknowledge them with earnesty, they will disappear automatically. Hum basically says that this om, which is the only jewel, ans which blooms from the murky waters of selfishness, is none other than you. You aren't a separate being apart from existence, there is no you, anatma. In essence the mantra says that existence and consciousness, the universe and the self, they are two sides of the same coin. And both are empty yet full of the light of the void.
Im a muslim and i listen to this and i love this. Because we used to have a maid who was Nepali and she played this every morning for 5 or 6 years and i used to sing along. It just gave me inner peace.
Last year i work at a shop selling drinks and just beside the store is a buddist who sells crystal bracelet, fortune telling and tarot card reading. Every morning he will play this chant on his speaker, i somehow get used to it and find it so calming. One day he fell sick and didnt open his store for a week, i m close to him by the time so we talk like besties everyday but when i didn't hear this chant in the morning i was all of ansudden cannot stay calm so i message him how is he doing and after he told me he is okay im somewhat relieved, and i did ask him for this chant and where can i find it, he gave me a link on youtube and i played this on my shop every morning since.. sadly my shop got closed down and moved else where. Still i found this chant and played this whenever i need inner peace and calmliness. I do meditation now around 4am before i do any work after. This really helps me keeping my positivity and peace through out the day. Im a Christian by the way and i see no harm chanting this while meditating.
Thanks for sharing this story. You know I am still so gripped by the resentment for the racism on my community that was rampant some decade ago. Even though this has almost completely gone, I still can't get over the resentment even though I want to for the past experience is too bitter and it hunts like ghost. But experience like yours give me the real hope one day I will be free from this resentment. It's too heavy 😭😭
