  • Over the years I've heard from hundreds of families that they have realized they are living a consumeristic and wasteful life but just don't know where to start to make changes. I often hear that they want to create less trash and are tired of filling up garbage bag after garbage bag.
    In this video Jessica at Baby Steps to Zero Waste, shares her journey of going zero waste as a family and what you can do as well.
    You may remember, I stayed with Jessica and her family in Montreal this winter and it was a really wonderful experience to see all that she and her family are doing to live a more environmentally friendly life.
    Jessica shares a lot of valuable information for raising a family zero waste.

    I have noticed one thing for several years...the more money people have,meaning the more rich they are, people tend to go for the use and throw options and the less money people have, meaning the poor and middle class people often choose to reuse-recycle/upcycle and waste as low as possible, which in turn saves our planet and reduce our wastage...
    In India, we have always carried cloth bags for shopping, bought clothes only during festivals (not like today ,crazy shoppers-consumerism), bought small quantities of gorceries/household items ,etc as the family needed, never stocking up too much(even the square footage of the home was less - our family of five stayed in a two bedroom home, we grew up happy and content, slept on a mat on the floor...simple living) it is not about how much we had, it was our way of life, do not regret that even for a second...seeing around me, so much consumerism I feel like I am drowning in things wherever I go...
    hope we are not too deep into the tunnel that we do not find our way out...hope all of us do our part and keep our Earth/Mother Nature safe and healthy for one and for all... God bless...

    We started with cloth diapering , 4 kids it cost us about 400 total because I bought the all ones and when they were all done I sold them for 50 bucks, we then moved on to cloth napkins, dishclothes instead if paper towels etc, we now have a 16ft by 50 ft garden at put house in the middle of town, were we live on a 50ft by 100ft house lot, it is possible , you just have to learn to make due with what you have and not try to keep up with what everyone else is doing/has

    The hardest thing I find to curb waste on is food packaging. There are no stores that sell bulk foods in my city of 200,000 people (crazy, I know), though I am trying to grow more and more of my own food. I also like buying from the local markets where I can usually get stuff without packaging more easily.

    Hello Jessica :-) Julien here from Quebec city! I'm a happy father of 3 and a happy lover so I felt connected to you and your family! I was wondering if you count recycling as you waste. I know some people do because our recyling system is not always as efficient as it should be. What are your thoughts on this? Much love !

      @littlejessmo Před 4 lety +2

      Bonjour Julien! So happy to connect with you! Our recyclable waste doesn't fit into a can (yet?!) But we are definitely working towards reducing our recycling as well! We went from putting out a big blue bin every 2 weeks, to putting out that same bin maybe 4 times a year :) Recycling is not a viable solution to our plastic problem, so we don't use that as a crutch, most of what is in our recycling is paper, glass or tin. Always a work in progress

    If I could manage to go zero waste, I'd still have to pay for putting outside trash bags even though I would't be putting them outside. It's a minimum prize that rizes according to the amount of bags you put outide. So this minimum prize always has to be paid, whether you have trash or not.. So that's not really stimulating people to have less waste.

It's an app called www.togetherai.co it's a digital companion for my kids, it chats to them and sees how they're feeling, it also monitors their social media and device usage then notifies me if there is anything I should be concerned with. It's super handy, especially when trying to improve how I communicate with my little ones. I highly recommend it!
