There are so many modern options and tools Uri could use but he CHOOSES not to use them. Power tools for cutting and sanding but he opted hand tools and making a pedal powered jig saw. Laser engraver for doing all the intricate marking but he opted for hand engraving. Old school craftmanship demonstrating his artisan nature in every piece. This is why I love his videos. That, and his accent just adds something special.

Hey everyone! some people pointed out that I forgot to take the timezone under consideration, and they are totally correct. So I've check the solar accurate time and it turns out the timezone is about 20 minutes ahead of the sun in my area (12:19 instead of 12:00 for E.g.), so we actually got a much more accurate measurement than I though :)

You might be able to further adjust your time using the "Equation of Time" Chart/Graph if it is not built into your device. Do a google search for the info. It is common;ly used for sundials. WELL DONE!

Yes the accuracy of this as a time piece requires accurate knowledge of exact location.... Yet this can be used to navigate the world ... You just will never know your exact longitude due to time errors however latitude should be accurate.... You sail to the speck in the ocean you are heading for by sailing so that your are definitely west or east of the target when you reach the latitude of the target then you follow the latitude to the target.... Like if you walk from the road and your car into the woods where there are no trails.... When you return you error to the right of where your are certain the car is then when you reach the road you know that if you turn left the road will lead to your car.... Anyone can navigate the entire world with a girl map and they can create an astrolabe or sextant or quadrant or back staff with a few sticks and sail the world accurately quite easily once you know how

Note that when you're comparing a time reading from an astrolabe to standard time there are a couple of adjustment you need to make--1) use the "equation of time" to resolve the difference between local mean time and local apparent time, and 2) correct for the difference between local mean time and standard time based on how far east or west you are from your time zone meridian.

The comment about walking into a Medieval tavern and being burned as a witch - anyone in that era with one of these would either be a wealthy person or have a wealthy patron, and would be in one of two major occupations that used such devices, namely, either a scholar (studying the heavens, perhaps making astrological charts for important people), or a navigator at sea (therefore an officer, not just a sailor). One thing you would NOT do is flash it around to impress random people, since it would be stolen in short order.

I really enjoy your channel and like that you mostly use self made tools. I’m working on making my own engraving tools for projects I’m doing. Your ingenuity is inspiring.

It was nice the way you left off engraving the lines of the Cosmos long enough to "oh by the way" convert my Momma's old sewing machine into a scroll saw. I love CZcams. (Nice shoes)

It is amazing to handcraft this beautiful mysterious precision instrument.
The emergence of a pretty mysterious cat always makes me feel happy.

I love your videos. having only just stumbled across them I am wondering what took so long? Never before have I seen hand engraving done and I was fascinated especially as it seems to be essentially wood carving.Thank you so much for sharing. Such beautiful work.

How awesome this guy is? True artist and craftsman... and so calm, and funny. Who can even think about disliking this?

I would love to see a collaberation between you and Clickspring. You seem to use more hand powered/old school techniques but his whole channel is built around the appreciation of those techniques as well. Plus you both have fabulous focus on camera work and editing. Just saying :)

Absolutely love your sense of humor!! I feel like it’s a lot deeper actually then people see, a lot probably goes over people’s heads! I feel like it’s fairly complex!

Great file work, it is an art that is being lost, I appreciate showing what can be done with a file. Thanks for showing your steel cutting shoes, they looked much more substantial and fashionable than the brass cutting shoes. Thanks for inspiring us to step up our game.

Love the scroll saw - I was half expecting a Sänger sewing machine base, those things are so common here in Australia that I never bothered to confirm that Singer is/was a USA company.

Weren't they German tho? Sure they had competitive prices at huge quality for many years(explain world wide availability) but I always assumed they weren't British and had destroyed a local cottage industry.

I gotta say, its a true craftsman who sets aside his intricate metal engraving project long enough to just toss together a fully functional scroll saw to finish the intricate metal project.
