THE MISSION: Hoss befriends Charlie Trent, a man who was once the best scout in the Army. Now a drunk, he blames himself for having led troops to their massacre. Captain Pender is looking for a reliable scout to lead his men across the desert with a shipment of gold. Seeing the chance for Charlie to redeem himself, Hoss recommends Charlie for the position. The man he's replacing, Cutter, is waiting in the desert to steal the valuable shipment.
Hoss was such a sweetheart, so kindhearted. Just started watching and I’m already crying.

This is one of my top 10 episodes from the greatest TV show ever. I was 9 years old the time and to this day, Lorne Greene (Canadian) is just like my father, letter perfect.
The Mission is one of the best episodes in the Bonanza series. The episode portrays the trials and tribulations of early day explorers in general and those of the Old West in particular. The heart-ache of finding a water hole poisoned at the end of a long day's march and the ecstasy of finding clear water after another day or two of hard dry march are both well portrayed. The episode shows how explorers in rough terrain and weather are left with little more than self-confidence in keeping body and soul together and blazing their train to safety in unknown territory. The old scout leading the cavalry is the hero of this great episode.

I came to say the best episode too. Loved the story. Hoss in this was so cool as usual. I like the cavalry ones. Also any that Michael Landon is in too (although he's not in this of course).

Oh Charley Trent got something a lot of people never get in life : a second chance and because of others' faith in his ability, he did a great service for them. Trent , you might say, found Redemption. Great episode.

I remember him in the role of newspaper proprietor in " Jesse James ", with Tyrone Power, Henry Fonda, and Randolph Scott. Great actor, and that gravelly voice of his... ☺

brilliant episode. I am watching this from my house in Thailand. Takes me back to my youth in Europe.There were good tv episodes that time. Now all you get is crap and so called reality shows that are all scripted.
There's some good stuff nowadays, but I sure do miss the good ol' days when a great show could get hundreds of episodes instead of a just couple dozen. Nothing seems to last anymore.

This was a great adventure story in the old west, with an old scout for Gen. Fremont leading the way. The villain in this piece played the circus owner in Trapeze and the vendor of the hangman's noose in Twilight Zone...

Another example of fine work by a veteran cast of actors. Among the supporting players are: Henry Hull (Werewolf of London, 1935), John Dehner (ubiquitous radio and film actor perhaps most well known as radio's Paladin), Harry Carey Jr. (one of John Ford's stock company). The others all equally competent and enjoyable. A good entertaining job all round.!

Same here. One of my fondest childhood memories was visiting the Ponderosa Ranch theme parks in Lake Tahoe, Nevada. Hoss was my favorite character of the show. I was just up in Lake Tahoe last weekend and sadly found that the property was closed and sold to a developer. As a filmmaker I would love to film Bonanza but in a new Lake Tahoe location and continue the storyline with their descendants.

So in all the episodes of bonanza from the 1st episode to the last hass killed 315 ppl. Lil Joe killed 375. Adam killed 389 and "paaw" killed 6003. Hats off to The best bunch of righteous serial killers the west had ever seen. They made billy the kid look like a billy goat!
