The resentment players have towards PFF makes more sense when you learn that PFF grades and statistics are often cited in contract negotiations

to be fair, they just pull PFF stats because PFF exist. These negotiations are like lawyer cases, you take evidence from your ass if needed be and fabricate whatever stuff you need.
Do they need to make sense? No. They just need to exist so you can support your claim to give this player you're not really sure about 1 year - 15M instead of the 3 year - 60M he's asking. And on the flip side, I bet you whatever you want players/agents have also pulled whatever shady stat line they can even from PFF to support their claim for a better contract.
The thing is, players are mostly always egotistical and think they play and worth way more than they actually do. They have people pampering them all day long and telling them how amazing they are, including their agents. And FO personnel see players as tools/objects and need to put a value on them like they were a piece of equipment. How long will this machine deliver the result I expect before it breaks out? Imagine if you were to pay a guy like Deion Sanders what he thinks he's worth.
There must be some middle ground. Who will do this work? If 2 players post the exact same stat line, how do you say one was better? And if you're sitting there watching film just because and end up making a service out of it... Does your time not have value? Your work is being pulled in contract meetings and you shouldn't earn a single penny from it?
He’s absolutely right. PFF is all subjective and they often don’t even know the assignments of the players. I loved what he said about pass rush win rate. What’s it matter if you’re “winning” pass rushes if it doesn’t result in anything other than a PFF stat?
winning a pass rush forces the ball out of the qbs hand. Just because Watt gets a cleanup sack on a backup qb doesnt mean he is impacting the game

Some people are giving him crap but Joe Burrow essentially said the same thing.
He pointed how overrated sacks are because many times a sack has zero effect on that actual outcome. He talked about a game in college where he was sacked 7 times, and he scored a touchdown on every possession in which there was a sack, so it had zero impact on the game.
He pointed out that guys who generate consistent pressure are the worst to play against, even if they never touch him one time. He noted in that same game that a 100% touchdown was prevented by a quick pass rush up the middle. The player never touched him, but the time it took for him to get out of the pocket allowed the corner to recover and turned a 100% wide open touchdown into a 50/50 ball and they didn't convert.
Not saying PFF is correct, but they are at least attempting to look at metrics beyond what shows up in the actual NFL stat totals. I do agree that sometimes you can't judge correctly without knowing the assignments though.

When player X completed 30 of 39 passes for 360 yards and five touchdowns. He was placed 8th in PFF rankings with 71.5 grading.
1st place in that week got 91.5 grading and had 2 INTs.

You're obviously too stupid to understand the grading then. It doesn't go off box stats, it's goes off how you play within the frame of what you can control. If player x had great stats but didn't need to do anything other than throw screen passes, he gets an ok grade. If someone has an elite game but 2 passes are intercepted due to tips or dropped passed, you can still score highly.

I saw a similar thing on PFF once, but then I spent 15 seconds actually thinking about it and it made sense.
In my case, one QB had a bunch of yards and some TDs, but like 70% of the yards were YAC. He threw a bunch of short, easy throws that resulted in big plays because of his receivers.
The second QB made a lot of great throws, but 80% of the yardage was air yardage as opposed to YAC. He also had two interceptions, but both of them hit his guy right in the hands and they flubbed the catch which resulted in a pop-up that was intercepted. He also led a game winning drive that ended in a run play TD. His final stat line was like 300ish yards, 0 TDs and 2 ints, but he played way better than QB 1. Very likely a similar case in your example.
The irony is that PFF is actually trying to look at it from his point of view, but for some reason he is really bothered by it. lol I do agree that judging lineman is nearly impossible without knowing the assignment.

“Made up stats” lol. It’s just measuring what players do. NFL players don’t want to be quantified mathematically, they want to keep the old ways of “eye tests” so they can dupe people into believing they’re better than they actually are.
PFF also hates TJ Watt for some reason too, and it keeps getting more obvious each year. They absolutely praised Myles Garret this year but could not put actual stats behind their claims because TJ was beating him in almost every category. This is the first year where I’ve seen these “analysts” praise a defensive players “pass rush win rate”over his actual stats
They didn’t even include TJ as an honorable mention for DPOY. Dude had 19 sacks

They explain why myles has been better, and that's because he's done better with the things he can control. He's beaten the blocker more frequently than Tj, which is the main goal. He can't control how many sacks he has cause sometimes the qb gets rid of the ball too quick for a sack.
PFF once graded my Raiders O-line as a top 5-6 unit in the whole NFL.
Meanwhile Carr was sacked or pressured so relentlessly that season that I figured they just guessed at their rating and never once put on a single game with my Raiders all season.

That's a great example. It demonstrates that you're still too reliant on box-score stats that don't present individual impact on a play. Specifically, it demonstrates the impact that a QB can have on play's outcome by taking to long to get the ball out.
PFF's mission is good. The problem is that they can't really know a player's assignment or what he is taught to do by his OC/DC. But how they ended up grading Stroud at that number is crazy.
You can grade football players with an algorithm, but how do you quantify all of the nuances that go into grading a player? Teams do their own evals, so they have their own "algorithms." There is nothing wrong with wanting a system that removes your personal biases as much as possible. I like what PFF is trying to do, but obviously they have problems if Stroud's game is graded so low.

Stroud threw an interception that was dropped by the defense and one of this touchdowns was a -1 yard play that went 76 yards for a touchdown. They shouldn't give him a super high grade to match his stats because of those two plays.

PFF grades are as good as madden ratings. One thing in particular that enrages me is their coverage grades.
For Example: Its 3rd and long. The CB plays soft to prevent a deep ball. WR catches the ball underneath but fails to make the first down. CB has done his job in preventing the first down, but PFF gives a negative grade because he had a catch on him.
Yeah no that's not how that works. That would be a positively graded play.

Ive watched players absolutely wreck games and PFF is like ehhh 68.5. Isnt one of their top guys, Steve, a former baseball player? What would he know about football
Baseball was one of the first sports to fully embrace analytics, you'll be surprised how much data analysis transfers over from sport to sport.
PFF rankings are a joke. They use numbers to tell people who is great or who sucks. I feel JJ on this one, it's a team game but they award individual performances in a team game. Making up categories and stats that tell us our eyes suck.
Tj Watt doesnt suck, but he gets consistent sacks as a result from his teammates. He doesnt generate the pressure that a Parsons or Garrett does

Yeah it’s pretty stupid that NBC has the players PFF grade when they do the player intros. PFF has proven to be a very flawed system.
My question is why are 3rd party stats systems being used in NFL contract negotiations as leverage? Or could the players union not develop their own?
Like you just said, it's third party and independent and so teams can use it to torpedo contract negotiations if it gives stats that will allow teams to not pay what they really should.

If team insiders don't lend the grades any credence, how could it possibly affect contract negotiations? If it is affecting contracts, that dictates that team insiders are lending the grades credence. JJ is pissed because CJ Stroud was graded low. But PFF will recognize that something is off there and they will correct it as they've done all along. If you believe that PFF is wrong for grading players because they're not insiders or experts, then you also have to believe that JJ Watt is not qualified to rate player graders because he's not an insider or expert on the matter.

@@bananaman4589I think the system is flawed, but Stroud isn't a good example. Turnover worthy plays should definitely be accounted for when comparing similar passing performances.
Stroud also accumulated his yards via run after catch on a screen pass to Collins, as well as a couple other passes that weren't necessarily "perfect" passes that the receiver makes a play on, that won't earn the same grades as a great throw that defeats tight coverage. PFF is far from perfect, but stat watching is way worse, because no single game is the same. It's still ultimately arbitrary.
If PFF grades are being used in player contract negotiations that actually speaks more about the front office executives tbh

college football is the biggest collective delusion in sports history, like ever lol Ok, Mich line is dominant. Against whom? Ok, strong teams. How strong? Oh, they lost a game. Against whom? And in these games, how better or worse were their lines in respect to their teams? And who grades it, the cabal of the all-knowing, all-powerful grading specialists from the ncaa?? How do they end up there? Do you have to go through a course, are they appointed, are they elected, are they initiated? Is it a cult? lmao
So if even the official seeding specialists are shady, in a way the whole team rankings are kinda sus... How do you even grade UNITS or PLAYERS inside those teams??
I think you have to understand that they are grading you against your competition and how well you perform against your competition but then that’s why you have to factor into college football level of competition when you representing the stats or the information
My view is their system is the best analytical option available to fans right now, far from perfect but teams are not forthright with their what is asked on any given play and that’s the crux of the majority of the legitimate criticism. Also I think do agree certain positions work better within their systems than others. The idea that they’re intentionally biased against certain players to affect contracts I think is totally false.
There are a lot of things he said true but a lot of things he's not really right about lol. Namely the pass rush win rate not always equating sacks. If you think Nick Bosa is 40% worse than year than he was last year because he got 10 sacks instead of 16 then you don't get football.
I think like with most things, this conversation requires a nuanced approach. PFF does have useful data, and should be a piece of determining how good people played. But it shouldn't be the only source of data, just a piece of the puzzle. The stats are the stats, but they also don't tell the whole story. Kind of like the score in the Packers Cowboys game.
For the people on twitter who ask what Aj Hawk does unironically, that last 5 seconds is the perfect description of what Aj does and boy is it beautiful.
AJ is a menace to society and thrives in chaos. The timing that he has with the toxic statements that he makes is just impeccable. What he says at the end of this video is a thing of beauty. To state that madden should use PFF to rate players because clearly PFF know better than anyone else, but the additional motive for saving money on payroll is priceless. Essentially going against what everyone else has been saying the entire video , and madden can save money too just like the teams do in contract negotiations by using PFF

JJ is great. But Michael Lombardi was on this a year or two ago at least. He has a great story on watching film with a person that worked for PFF.
PFF is the New Mel Kiper draft expert. He knows more than scouts and GMs and can see players futures. PFF knows all plays and assignments. And the answer to all shoulda, coulda, woulda, throughout the game.
Mel was considerably wrong every year. I've always listened to his stuff to see what is unlikely to happen.
PFF explicitly says they don't know those things.
well, hear me out. Cris Collinsworth is my goat of calling games, I love that man. When I'm sick and not feeling good just throwing on an old game and hearing him talk, it's a warming and comforting thing because I grew up with him and before him was Madden, however, the one thing Cris has done that I never liked was PFF. He bought a majority steak in the company back in 14 so there is your answer as to why it is always on

I've always thought PFF is trash, I give little to no credit to peoples statements when they mention PFF ratings/rankings.
I will believe in PFF once significant people go from working at PFF to successful coaching careers. If they are really hiring the best people at watching and grading film then NFL franchises would be lining up to get them on staff, but it doesn't seem to be happening.

I am personally not that interested in a lot of the arguments about PFF being used in contract negotiations because that is better to use than the stuff that bad front offices used before, which is how many nice articles were written about the player in the local news
I get you all want to circle jerk JJ and it's not completely unwarranted. He's a hall of famer and obviously knows a lot more about football than anyone else here. The issue is that you all think he and every other player/coach with a bone to pick is infallible and honest. JJ was a great player but that doesn't mean he is the best evaluator, and it doesn't mean he isn't biased. Any accusation you could make of PFF, you could also make of JJ. Ironically, the difference between the two is that JJ believes he doesn't experience the same roadblocks that PFF experiences when it comes to evaluating players, which is the exact arrogance that JJ is accusing PFF of showing. PFF readily admits that there are aspects of player performance that are not captured in their data (sometimes by design), but JJ is so full of himself that he believes he's figured that out before they have. It's clear that JJ understands how to play football at a high level, but that doesn't translate to knowing how to evaluate players at a high level. Teams have an entire set of staff that are payed (very well) to serve that one purpose, and even they get it wrong. PFF's explicit goal for existence is to serve that purpose at a higher level than any other group. There's nothing that serves as a roadblock unique to just them. Everyone else runs into the exact same issues, including JJ. A lot of what you all speculate over are things that no one external to the team has access to use.
I disagree with JJ to a degree. They don't have a horrible system. Just look up how they grade QBs. CJ had a throw that should have been a pick, other plays were really big yards after the catch. Btw a 77 is a good grade. They were also just grading one game. Calm tf down

Who gets to say that that rush was a win? Who gets to say that that was a pressure but that wasn’t? That’s the problem with these over analytics. Not even goes by the same metric and not everyone agrees. I’ve seen multiple different stats of pressures and win rates for garret and TJ

Even madden hoed CJ. Graded him 80 overall. While other QBs who played the position got a much higher rating than him. Look I get he’s a “rookie” but he’s not playing like one and you can say he’s top 3 or 5 at the position
Cj strouds stats and Jordan loves stats were nearly identical in their playoff games and Jordan got a 92.5 and cj got a 77.8 that’s crazy

QBR is probably a far worse state than PFF grades
NFL football is way too specialized for companies like PFF to develop a valid and reliable tool to grade players.
Trying to grade NFL players is like asking "what is the best organ in the human body?"

While I agree with JJ, there's one part that I don't agree with he put it down as "affect pro bowl votes, affecting All Pro voting" as if those other two "awards" aren't also flawed. I mean the Pro Bowl is 1/3 fan votes which are going to be almost always biased towards their team, 1/3 is player votes and they may not be as biased but they'll also be biased, and 1/3 coaches votes which may be the least biased but the other side of that is coaches probably are not putting too much effort into this as they have games to prepare for. Then there's the AP All Pro honors, 50 writers give a 1st or 2nd place rank to players, and it's as simple as that, they can't have any biases themselves? If players are going to have contract stipulations based on "grades" or "awards" whether it's PFF or Pro Bowl, then that's on them for negotiating that into their contract.
The concept of what PFF does is brilliant. I love how QBs arent punished for an interception that hits the WR in the hands. But, man, most of their execution is just absolutely abysmal. Myles is better than TJ because he has a higher pass rush win rate. But… is that really more important than winning slightly less, but finishing wayyyyyyy more?
I have AJ doesn’t say a word. And then why don’t they just use PFF?

When it comes down to it, the only thing that matters is results.
Not just in the NFL but in work life too. What did you accomplish, what did you produce.
Pff to their credit is trying to expand that quantification. HOWEVER their metrics are way too skewed towards metrics that dont directly impact the down, distance or scoreboard. Those are the big 3 in terms of results and how players have and should be predominantly graded.
Everything else, pass rush win rate, turnover "worthy" play, at this time is way too juvenile/immature and too subjectiveof a field of collection to give it the weight PFF is trying to push.
Maybe one day we will get there but using PFFs extra stats are just that, extra. NOT the primary result driven data
