Never was really a big fan of the Prophet 5 back in the day .. I chose the OBXa then switched to a Jupiter 8 as my working axe back in the day, but having said that this is obviously a very very good emulation of the P5 .. no difference to these 64yo ears. I see no need to have any analog synthesizers anymore with modern computer technology and VST’s. I still have a dozen old analogs laying around the house and they’re just dust traps .. a pain in the arse to keep dusted and clean, and they just jack my electricity bill up when they’re running. I only keep em around for nostalgic sake .. but even that’s gotten old. Perhaps I’ll revisit the Prophet 5 for giggles vicariously through this softube plugin. A belated thanks man for this review.
The left right thing is interesting and different but for a listening test I don't favour it. You can't really hear the intricacies of each with both playing simultaneously.
When they're this close I dont see much value in picking into intricacies that are essentially the same between 2 synths or even 2 voices on the same synth. I did try it at first but it was just soooo boring! :).. it really did come across as far too nerdy and pointless.
For many (including myself) part of the magic of a hardware synth is the physical interface/workflow. If having this as a VST instrument makes sense in the rest of a setup and that is a priority the SoundForce SFC-5 could be just the ticket as a controller.
The SFC-5 is indeed a fantastic Prophet 5 plugin controller (and also usable for many other plugins) and works much better than a generic MIDI controller because of the layout.
I totally agree that tactile control is all important, but it’s somehow more than that. I had the SFC-5 (& still have the U-he & Arturia softsynths) but yet I still found myself looking at the screen. Eventually sold some stuff to fund an actual P5 & never looked back. Hard to explain but there is something so immediate & satisfying about twiddling knobs on a hardware unit that I never got from plug-ins, even with dedicated controllers like the SFC-5.

Haha.. the reason I did that was because there was so little to say. There were no characteristics in particular to pick out - it was a pure geekfest of ‘they sound the same’ over and over - so went with this instead.
Seems like I made a right choice in buying this immediately (last night) even though I am away from my PC as I am traveling and I will be home two weeks from now😊
Software instruments sound amazing nowadays, but i rarely play them. Without all them knobs and sliders? It's just too much hard work with that flippin mouse.
There are loads of really good ones now tbh.... and this is up there in the top bracket. All the Softube ones are amazing. I also really like the Roland Cloud ACB versions for the system 8.
Softube really nailed it this time. The sound is fat and wide, it has that gritty character and musical instability that the other emulations lack. I feel this one will really sit well in a mix and is generally a highly usable plugin. However, the hardware sound still has its edge and that 3d quality which especailly becomes noticable after fx processing.

It's so far from a P5 that you didn't even try the usual tricks you love to compare softwares to the real synths (take the common minimum and show that it's the same sound, I've seen all your videos or almost and I understood your operating mode :-) ). But this time you didn't dare. That says a lot, and confirms what my ears have heard, a simple VST, once the placebo effect of a P5 appearance removed. So, no, it's not convincing. And the fault is not with the demo which is always well done (apart the left/right trick that is indeed confusing). But you can't make a racehorse out of a donkey... not your fault.
No… I was of the impression this time that the differences were so slight comparing in that way was pointless. Watching back a couple of older videos I thought I was becoming a maniac at times!
Slighting those who think the right left comp is unsatisfactory by saying "tough, I think it's cool" is kind of out of touch don't you think? Why voice disregard, there is no need.
Well they gave ma a whole load of grief previously. If they had paid for the content I could understand but they didn’t… some people are so entitled that they expect others to put in a whole lot of effort aimed directly for their benefit without even a thanks… just abuse. @@garlander2238 yes old analog gear tend to be become unreliable and sometimes unusable ... I also did many blind tests with friends in perfect conditions ( good speakers, level match , no visuals ... ) and they get it wrong around 50 % of the time , it is a visual thing ... if you don't see the hardware working you are highly likely to fail a blindtest
The beginning sounded off to me, as if lacked certain lushness - I attributed it to "Rev3" mode at first, being quite surprised it sounded somewhat worse than my 600, until the "plot twist". It was a surprising blind test but I guess I could tell the difference after all. Still Softube did great, admittedly.
The left/right thing is a nightmare, comparing single ear sources on headphones only?? Awful. Impossible to tell the difference with your review technique.
The point is that there’s so little difference it sounds like the super 6 binaural effect - there’s little point in playing 2 essentially identical tones next to each other. It became a bizarre crazed comparison of a lunatic listening to the same thing twice. Maybe I could do a comedy version doing just that.
@@StarskyCarr Every other channel that compares soft synths to hardware plays one, then plays the other. I totally don't understand your technique for the majority of people, and I've never seen it done by anyone else. Just saying.
Yeah you seriously can’t compare them when one is panned left and one is panned right. I’m not going to download your youtube video and play it through my DAW so i can send left and right channels into mono with solos to compare them. Softube makes great stuff so i’m sure it’s close. But you’re not allowing people to hear a real comparison. This video is cool but essentially useless as a comparison. I wager that making videos all day is a very nice way to live. It would be nice if when you feel contempt for your viewers you wouldn't share it with them.
This is a hobby that just about pays for itself so there’s that to consider before assuming I’m paid to play with synths all day. I’m not. …. It’s not contempt, most people enjoyed it last time, only a few really vociferous people got very annoyed. I think I’m allowed to do things my own way and not cower from people who don’t give any useful feedback.. just take the videos and complain if there’s something they don’t like it’s not like anyone’s paying for a service. Most people are grateful for the effort I put in, which is considerable. This took many days and I did it for free. Probably made about £20 from adverts… so there’s all that to consider when thinking I show contempt. I don’t, I just do what I do and try to make it interesting, informative, fun and musical.
Of course I’m not I love my viewers but people you describe as fans aren’t the ones who gave me a load of Sh!!t last time I tried it. I haven’t done it since but here it works really well.
Filters are identical--what? you didn't even compare them, you just put them both in to self-resonance. You could use any synth and say they were "identical." What is this channel? It's just total bs, actually makes me a little mad.
I've done so many filter sweeps on 100s of videos tbh that these were so similar I was just going over old ground,.. and felt like a bit of a psycho.Like comparing 2 identical mugs.. just seemed pointless. I have to try to balance the length of the videos, interest and pace with relevant info. If there was something to talk about I'd have shown it and discussed why they were different. Maybe got the balance wrong for you this time? Calling it total BS is a bit off the mark. Be mad but there's tones of info in here. Sorry the specific bit you were after isn't.
@@StarskyCarr I say an objective reviewer/tester would try to prove they are different, not the same. Anything else is a sales pitch. If you've done 100s of these, you know enough to know where to look.
@@nuriamarti100 an objective review doesn't try to prove anything... simply demos what's there. If there are differences they are demo'd if not you don't try to find stuff for the sake of it. @@StarskyCarr OK but I can't remember any of your reviews where you say this synth does not do a good job of emulating the hardware its based on. Or hardware does not sound like the original. I guess I have different expectations when something is said to be "identical." No hard feelings here.
@@nuriamarti100 yeah but there’s loads of stuff I haven’t connected with and haven’t done a review. Just because I don’t like it doesn’t mean others won’t, but I’m not going to take it down just because I don’t connect. I also get loads of grief when I’m not sure about something. The OBX8 is a good example - and I even bought it. Having a negative response to something gives me so much hassle I’ve taken stuff down and moved on. So you’re right, you’ll only see videos where I like something, or I find a unique angle to use it, or can appreciate what it is. Take a look at my Cherry Audio 106 comparison. I like the idea of it but just couldn’t get it to sound like my 106. For the price it was worth it, but it’s not an exact emulation if my hardware and I say that. I’ve even been sent hardware to review that I’ve spent a while trying to understand and sent it back.

czcams.com/video/8TaKS8NEZqg/video.html for a resonant sweep... sawtooth not PWM Im afraid :)
Half the price of the U-he, but no effects? What to do about that?
Sounds really good for an emulation but ofc like any other lacks the attack, body and the filter/resonance sweep of the real thing.
@starky carr any chance you could compare it to uhe repro?
you can download a demo of both and compare 🤣
Lovely stuff
Can you compare with Repro-5 ?
Not quite sure if it was the sound or some other indicator but from quite early I was waiting for you to say we were listening to the plugin not the actual thing.
I was wondering the same thing, but I don't know the Prophet 5 at all so it wasn't a sound thing. Was some other indicator for me.
dude. F--- yeah, just gonna trial first to see how runs(always have sizing problems on my big screen tv)😎
I couldnt teally hear a difference with the steeeo separation
We live in spoiled times. No matter what the purists will tell you. I'm in love with my Cherry Audio synth bundle.
thats my next buy
How to set the prophet rev 4 to (midi) control the Model 80? 🙏 My rev 4 doesn't control Arturia Prophet 5
Good video indeed.
It does sound good even to these old ears. Seems to have hidden menu.
Don’t like the L/R channel comparison format … Please just do a proper A/B Test … !!!! Thanks!!
Haha.. the reason I did that was because there was so little to say. There were no characteristics in particular to pick out - it was a pure geekfest of ‘they sound the same’ over and over - so went with this instead.
Tried to get the Demo and once again It was a nightmare. I refuse to deal with anything Softube. Pace and their own installer and dumb activation.
Hey Starsky! At what sample rate are working on with the softube synth?
I think its 44.1
Seems like I made a right choice in buying this immediately (last night) even though I am away from my PC as I am traveling and I will be home two weeks from now😊
I wasn't convinced and heard directly it was a plugin.
… or was it? 😉
@@StarskyCarr I hope it was otherwise I cannot trust my ears. doesn't sound so bad btw.
Lol Bizzies 😂
From note 1 it was obvious it’s software. Having said that softube is the business and do great plugins.
What if the next video shows it was a double bluff 😂😉 thanks for stopping by.
@@StarskyCarr but it won’t lol the giveaway is that digital distortion on cranked resonance.
@@INHALTVIDEO 😀
Good try, Starsky, but I knew straight away it was the software at the intro!
No foolin” those golden ears
Actually, it was software throughout the entire video. He merely told you he was comparing them.
Or was it a double bluff 😂😉
Software instruments sound amazing nowadays, but i rarely play them. Without all them knobs and sliders? It's just too much hard work with that flippin mouse.
From all you showed us, is this the best virtual clone of a hardware analog synth?? :)
There are loads of really good ones now tbh.... and this is up there in the top bracket. All the Softube ones are amazing. I also really like the Roland Cloud ACB versions for the system 8.
I gotta say the gforce SEM and 8 voice are pretty stellar. This and their Juno is next on the buying list for me
Softube really nailed it this time. The sound is fat and wide, it has that gritty character and musical instability that the other emulations lack. I feel this one will really sit well in a mix and is generally a highly usable plugin. However, the hardware sound still has its edge and that 3d quality which especailly becomes noticable after fx processing.
I really like it. Will have to play it some more later, but, it sounds very good to my ears. Was a total impulse buy. Saw the email, put in the voucher code, and hit the buy button. 😉 I knew that it'd be good, but, I really need to consider those impulse buys...
@@chakko007 I will probably end up buying it too. But I haven't received the email yet. Whats the voucher code this time?
@@benzmobil I wrote a reply, but, somehow it was deleted, probably someone voting it down, or someone thought it wasn't OK to share the voucher code. Which is hilarious, because, everyone subscribing to their newsletter gets it, and, the code is nothing secret really. 😉

@@gdansk12349 Thanks!
Really good emulation spoiled by the lousy preset browser.
No one wants the fuzz after you for 'avin' a go, mate.
Jesus....

There’s a backstory but hey… you didn’t know - no worries. now you do.
@@StarskyCarr OK, I get ya. But remember, if we don't know the backstory, sending out a blanket burn might hit the wrong ear, like mine. I was kind of hurt, but I admit, I am a bit touchy. No scattergun replies please!
I think your videos are great, really the best synth channel I know of. However, I never like to be told my opinion doesn't matter, even if it is shared by some meanie. The comp picked my ass viciously. I am sorry if others responded with a hack and slash, that's lousy.
I assumed you must make enough money to do it for a living, because your presentations are so good and plentiful. I find it discouraging that you aren't compensated properly. You deserve to be fully supported, your work is too good.
Thanks for taking the time to explain your reasoning to me, I appreciate your respect and the time you donate.
I'd like to think our fandom is payment, but maybe I owe you more. Duly noted.
You are right, people who snipe you are not fans, f**k those dudes.
I humbly apologize for my assumption.
Peace man.
Repro is still my fave. 1 and 5
Repro is a good synth but softube sounds better and more " real "
@@chrisrevel2801 only the real thing sounds real
@@garlander2238 Yeah i used to think that , I ve collected a lot of gear over the years. There was a long period of time where the difference was massive but then it started going the other way , for ex : i own 2 Sh101s and I prefer the softube version
@@chrisrevel2801 I have maximum respect for Softube. I love Tape and Zener Bender and stuff. But I never got friend with their synths. Too perfect somehow. IMHO.
@@RJ1J I normally do... this was a first, precisely because of the reasons above.
I know a lot of people can’t hear a difference but i’m a professional mix engineer with 35 years experience so i can. And I appreciate a proper comparison for professionals, not just comment fodder for opinionated 19 year old synth nerds. Ymmv.

You sound ungrateful to your fans. What would you be doing if it wasn't for them? Would you be touring the world or pumping gas?
That's not objective. So yeah I do know where to look, I looked and I found there was nothing of note to comment on.
Off the top of my head.. don’t think I was very complimentary about the Odyssey software I tried (maybe you haven’t watched them all!) I’ve even been sent hardware to review that I’ve spent a while trying to understand and sent it back.
I noticed you did a bit of a crafty gforcesoftware on us at the beginning lol.
To me, both synths sound identical without a doubt and the panning is actually
a good idea for earphone listeners.
