I think this is probably cultural differences between Europe (Scotland ) and USA but Tom seemed pretty positive to me, in fact in Scotland it would be considered lavish praise he was honest, fake praise or overdone praise is annoying as it gives doubt whether it is really meant or just said to keep you happy.I don't want to be treated as a child with excessive praise for something relatively small, "wonderful worker" sounds pretty good to me. I would never tidy or re oraganise my husband desk or garage as he knows where things are, he would not want the oils and greasesfor the cars in the same place as oils and greasesfor woodworking machines and he certainly would not want drill bits for metal with drill bits for wood,
Just wondering though for my American friends if you use amazing and wonderful all the time what do you say when it is truly amazing. I also think men and women are wired differently when a man says something is fine he means 9/10 but when a woman hears a man say fine she thinks he means 6-7 /10 , we are all human maybe both Tom and Dawn where expecting something different from each other, but at least nothing harsh was said by either it is just how it is sometimes we can't read the other person's mind and give them want they want.

I want to acknowledge you for the growth & wisdom you showed in the comments you made after Tom left, regarding YOU have to focus on the fact that the messy corner wasn't bothering Tom so that is why he wasn't as excited as you that it is now cleaned up & organized. Please know that as I am watching this video, I want to congratulate you AND Corbin for a job well done. I recently reorganized, redecorated my studio (I'm a formerly professional designer, sculptor-- now it's just a delightful pastime). My husband and family members tirelessly teased me for labeling everything and having matching bins, chairs, etc. Worrying about paint colors. Funny thing is, I find them coming to sit with me and enjoying the room far more than their own workspaces. So maybe the appreciation will be wordless but none the less apparent in the end. Just wait till Tom goes to find a screw and doesn't have to dig through 85 tubes of caulk.

My sisters have teased me my whole life for being organized. They made me feel bad, like something was wrong with me. But now I have realized that it is a gift to be able to organize, be proud of my home, and find things easily. One cousin we have, who made fun of me at my house for being organized, did not even let my sister in last time she went there. And a bad smell was coming out of the front door. So, to each his own.

I love when you say ‘I love you’ to us. It always makes me smile. Sometimes our decluttering efforts pay off in unexpected ways. I have greatly reduced my possessions over a few years and was telling my husband how I love everything in my clothes closet as it all fits and looks good on me. He immediately said he is fine with everything he has and I reassured him I would never touch his stuff (although I can hardly find a spot to hang up his clothes when I do laundry). We talked about other things and then he went upstairs and came down with over a dozen shirts a few minutes later. He told me I can take this to the thrift store which I was going to the next day. I asked him why he was decluttering this many shirts since he had just told me he was fine with what he had. He didn’t really know why but it just struck him that he didn’t like everything he had. So you never know what will affect someone else. Just keep sharing what you have learned through decluttering with your family and you may be surprised. I know I was.

I love how Tom said “it says tools but it doesn’t help me know what’s in it” reminds me of when I gathered all my husbands tools in a box. He was like “how do I know what’s in there”. I said “look, having them in one place is better than a pile or strung out all over the house”. He had “lost” our stud finder. It was missing for 2 months. I went to clean the kitchen and found it and a handful of other tools on top of our fridge. Thankfully he’s now gotten organized and I can actually find things.
I also have a husband who could care less about what I organize in the house. However he had to show me every bit of organization he did in his pole barn and the garage.

But now, I'm almost 4 years in and my decluttering muscles are getting really STRONG! And so if other people in the house are unimpressed with an area I've simplified, I don't let it get me down because experience has now shown me that what I'm doing is SO WORTH IT! Whether they celebrate my efforts and achievements or not, I KNOW that what I'm doing is reducing our stress AND the time we spend cleaning now! It depends. I don't know this couples dynamic, but many that want to "help" "change" their partners ways do so in a very toxic manner. "Wouldn't it be "better" if you moved your told where I want them to be?" No they prefer the find out where they last put it method. Their visual cues and memory are truly wired differently. If you hound a grown adult to do things your way, then move their stuff anyway, you expect them to 'care' when to them, why would you waste the energy in the first place? Their mind doesn't organize that way. And unless it's unsanitary or dangerous, their way isn't "bad" or "wrong" vs the other extreme of compulsively labeling & constantly moving stuff around.

A grown adult gets to put their belongings where they want. "Messy" isn't "wrong" unless messy becomes dangerous or unsanitary - you don't get to tell others how to organize (even if you feel it's super nice and "better" and exciting). Do we hope to find someone we are alike in certain ways before marriage or learn to compromise? Yes. But those that rant and get mad at where their partner puts their socks, aren't mad at the socks. They are mad their partner didn't "do what they were told". You don't get to command obedience from your partner.

It looks awesome, and if Tom wants to see tools at some point, the wall to the right could add a peg board. Idk if that's brick. If he's looking for small household tools, though, they are no longer all over or in with trash. Anyone can easily dig through the bin. It all looks great and will be so nice when the last spot is finished. You've made such great progress on the whole basement. 😁

I would take the bin labeled "tools" and move it out to Tom's space, along with anything only Tom will utilize (caulk, etc.) Light bulbs can stay, since you would use those too. I tape user manuals to the item and add a date, so I know when I replaced my water heater, etc. Don't let his lack of reaction get you down.

This video came in such a perfect time for me. When my husband saw how I've been making huge progress with decluttering, thanks to your videos, he actually told me that "we" should do the garage next. And he added that when he said "we" he meant me, his wife only. I took it as a huge compliment that he was trusting me to organize his garage by myself. Dawn, I'm sure Tom appreciates your organizational skills. He'll show it even more in the near future when he looks for an actual tool or item and realizes how easy it is for him to find it without any help! It has happened with my husband when he has a bin of 8 or more measuring tapes. Also, I was so glad to see that we're not the only ones who ended up having bins of the same categories as you showed here: nails/screws; painting stuff; electrical; plumbing; hardware, AND, last but not least, CAULK! Thanks for such a wonderful video. I love that your kids are learning and helping along the way as well! God bless!

A few weeks ago I organised my husband's messy model railway hobby stuff and desk serious chaotic mess into a neat workstation with pegboard, new desk and labelled storage bins instead of everything in a muddle. His reaction was similarly underwhelming.
At first I was pretty deflated that I had spent a weekend working on his stuff. But I realised that it was me who was really affected the mess because it was in our bedroom and blocking our clothes storage so we were living out of laundry piles and I deserve a calm bedroom able to access our clothes storage even if wasn't bothering him to the same extent.
He's since said he appreciates being able to find things. And I've started to work on giving myself a lovely organised nook to use as an art studio because I realised part of my resentment was I had spent my time and energy on a space for him when I didn't have a space for me.
Thanks for sharing that it isn't just my husband and your wisdom that it's okay to do things like this for ourselves if it is stressing us out.

  • @jameshuxley5531
    @jameshuxley5531 Před rokem +3

Great job, Dawn! Tom's response was underwhelming, but I think he'll appreciate it over time!
A tip that has helped me: I'm known for being very micro-organized (a "cricket") and I don't accumulate a lot of stuff, but when I have projects going on, the project items would tend to get spread out and I'd leave them sitting out. This would, understandably, feel cluttered to my family, even though they are 'logical" and organized to me as I know what each tool is for and where each piece is going to go.
I have since ended the clutter by creating simple "Work in Progress" or WIP bins/totes. For instance, right now I'm remodeling the bathroom, and then repainting it, so there are three simple totes for each stage of that project. The WIP totes are easy to grab and take to the project space, and -- when needed -- to tuck back away if something interrupts work. I keep them on a WIP shelf near an outlet so that everything is charged and ready to go so when I find a spare moment, I can dive back in. And if I have left things out due to an interruption and anyone else in my family finds they need to get the project out of the way, they know they can put everything in the WIP bin and they will not have to worry about causing any issues.
The WIPs are also a reality check. I keep it to three. If I start trying to take on more projects than I have room for in my Work in Progress station, I realize that I need to complete a project before taking on something new and I add it to a "next" list instead of diving in. The final stage of every project is taking everything out of the WIP bin, cleaning it off, and putting it back in its permanent home; very satisfying.
One of the surprise benefits of the WIP bin is that I now start each project with my WIP bin in hand, and I "shop my workshop" before I purchase anything. Often, I start a project with a list from a book or video of the things they suggest I'll need to achieve my goal, but if I look through my supplies first, I discover solutions from the tools and leftover project materials I already own.

So the kids doing the Allform was awesome! Such a great surprise! The basement looks amazing! You are the best at walking us through the "tough" spots and giving hope that it can turn out great! Thank you for that. The Tom reaction....he should know his wife and know that a "Wow, looks great hun" could be very appreciated. I think any human wants that. Even if they really dont care! 🤣Me and my hubby are celebrating 30 years in Feb, he has learned what to say! 🤣🤣🤣 Or he would be in the dog house! Corbin is the best kiddo, so helpful, always. Thank you for the "real-life" videos, its why I keep watching!

Toms a good sport, he was happy enough with your efforts 🤣 how good was his faith in you- saying you could throw that stuff away without looking at it?! 💖💖

I showed Toms reaction to my husband because I thought he’d fine it amusing 😆 He doesn’t want me touching his stuff in our shed. Haha I told him I just can’t imagine not being so excited and grateful because it looks soooo much better but we’re all wired differently

I really do appreciate you sharing your disappointment with Tom’s reaction as I’ve been in similar situations with my husband. It honestly helps and provides encouragement.

Dawn, I seriously just cleaned a space like this. The upside down tool case, old pieces of flooring and tile, empty lightbulb boxes, unopened and unused home project supplies. Wow. Thanks for sharing your normal. I'm usually so overwhelmed and discouraged over the fact that my life is messy like this, but your attitude gives me hope that this is all normal life. Thank you for your constant honesty. 💚💚💚💚💚💚

We have a laundry room closet that I stored light bulbs, batteries, glue/tapes, etc. I had old mismatched bins. I decided to clean, organized it and bought new white baskets and it was amazing looking in there. The white matching baskets made it all so nice to find what I needed. Color and form matter.

Way to go, Dawn! That was amazing! I never fail to be surprised at how much less time it actually takes to de clutter an area than the amount of time I expected it would take. Thanks for teaching me and sharing your journey with us. I love the kids in the ad/sponsor! ❤️🙏🏻Jane

I cannot tell you how wonderful and how important it is to have helper. Little Corbin is a hero to me! And I think he loves spending time with his mama! I love the pegboard idea for the tools it will help everyone. Daddy can have teaching time with Corbin on the use of each tool and it can be a teaching moment for father sons and daughters. Dawn thank you thank you for this video it is so blessed my heart. I know the disorganization can bother us but also it is a way to show love using our gifts to help others! Thank you

Fantastic job Dawn, such a huge difference and so satisfying to have everything so easy to locate. Your sweet son is a delight and your children are learning so much from you. Maybe there could be a bin for Tom's bland reaction, a really deep bin that is pushed out of sight so you can enjoy the fruits of your labour and know that your viewers think you're great. Looking forward to the next video - you really are an inspiration. This weekend is all about decluttering for me ☺

The tupperware container of randomness.........I felt it in my soul!!!!! I have multiple of those in my house, right now! My husband is in construction so I'm constantly finding screw bits, drill bits, tapes, carpenter pencils, etc and I don't' know what to do with them so they get put in a tupperware and I'm pretty sure that's where they go to die. lol
And bravo to Corbin on his paint skills!!!! I can guarantee you that if I was using a roller to paint the side of the enclosure, I would have got paint on the wall. 100% I would have. He did a great job!!!!!!!
