    Another great video! I just put new tires in March and increased my wheel size by 2" diameter. My previous tires still had the minimal requirement of 4/32", the threshold for replacing them. But these old tires had hardened way before that and started slipping a lot on the road, and it was terrible on wet days. The difference: the new wheels each weigh 6lbs more even though they are alloys that replaced the steel wheels, not to mention the new tires that were surely heavier.
    The result: I got better mileage on the highway - about 2-3 mpg more, but about the same or maybe

And with my 95 Dakota 3.9 Magnum V6 turning on the AC drops the mileage 3-4 mpg, down to 18 mpg. I think for a more powerful V8 it might not matter that much not to use AC but on less powerful 4- & 6-cylinder cars i think not using the AC makes a big difference. I can feel like a big boat anchor being thrown out onto the road when I turn on the AC.

    Never go by the suggested tire pressure info tag in your car's door jam. Inflate all tires to 3 psi under the max pressure stamped in the sidewall actually nets 7% better mileage

    • @CG-rb4xo
      @CG-rb4xo Před 2 lety

      Great advice. However, I would also advise people to pay attention to the ambient temperature, realizing that the psi will increase or decrease approximately 1 psi with every 10 degree change in ambient temperature. This could affect tire pressure monitors if your psi goes above the maximum, and it could definitely happen if there is more than a 30 or 40 degree change in temperature. Noteworthy, your tire pressure will also increase while driving it, although less so because with the increased pressure comes less friction and less heat. This usually happens more, and creates a much larger change in psi while driving whenever the tire pressure is set much lower.

    I used to always use Penzoil 5W20 full synthetic because I once did some work for a guy who had worked 34 years as a Salesperson for Penzoil. I figured if it's good enough for him it's good enough for me. Then my oil change guy changed to Valvoline. He said it was as good if not better than Penzoil which had some issues recently so I switched to Valvoline. He made no mention of Castrol Oil as suggested by Scotty. I figure if you can't trust your oil change guy, who can you trust? Oh yeh, what about Diet Coke instead of regular coke as shown in the thumbnail? lol

      The whole oil brand loyalty thing is largely moot. As long as it meets the specifications as described in your vehicle's owners manual, you'll be fine. Although I use a more expensive oil in my BMW (to meet the euro specifications) I always used the Costco/Walmart store brand synthetics in my Japanese cars and had no troubles, no different from when I was running a more expensive brand name synthetic

    I don't doubt that new tires cost some gas mileage... they are heavier for one thing.... but another thing is they have a bigger diameter, and the gas mileage calculation does NOT take that into account... so likely whatever difference you are calculating, is actually less [ unless your using GPS to determine distance and not tire rotations somehow ]... tire pressure would also have this diameter effect

    Another reason you get worse gas mileage with new tires is because they are taller. You are actually going a little farther per wheel rotation. I That may offset the mileage slightly without showing up on your calculations because your calculations are based on wheel rotation.

    • @volvo09
      @volvo09 Před 2 lety

      If you don't have a turbocharged engine then you shouldn't be seeing any difference. At altitude certain regions even sell lower octane such as 85 instead of the base 87. The thinner air is not compressed as hard in the engine, it's like never pushing the accelerator down all the way, the engine has no use for the extra octane.
