    This is super inspiring. I’m 18 and trying to become a film composer, I have the love for that kind of music you are writing with symphony orchestra and choir. Today, I heard my high school symphony orchestra and big bad perform an arrangement of the “Top Gun” Anthem, and it was chilling to hear real musicians perform something you’ve worked on. Love your channel!

      Hey Sebastian, thanks for watching the video! I'm glad that you found it inspiring. I'm happy you had the opportunity to hear a live orchestra perform your work. Live musicians really do elevate things to a whole new level. Keep up with the composition. If you want to be a film composer, you will make it happen.

    Thanks for sharing that Eric and I am so happy to see someone like you fulfilling their dream, really deserved, and wonderful, sensitive, energetic music. I'm saving up money to do that too at some point and it was great to see your experience. I had my first (very small) shared session recently, and I learned so much on orchestration that books can't teach. I might make a video on "what you expect to be performed vs what is really performed"!

    • @EricTurnnessen

      Thank you, Luke! This wasn't for a particular project. I'm grateful that my first experience could be just about the music. It was such an overwhelming experience with it being my first time, all the moving pieces and new processes I was introduced to and the emotion of it. If on top of all that I also had to be of service to a project, I feel like that would've added some additional stress 😅 I'm glad you enjoyed the final mix and the orchestration! I'm really happy with how things came out.

    • @LukeTruanMusic
      @LukeTruanMusic Před 2 lety

      @@EricTurnnessen , yes I can understand the emotions involved with this process. Your documentary footage of your experience really helped me understand how much more is involved in the process. I knew some of the steps, but I didn't know to what extent one has to be involved in the process. Would you consider hiring an orchestrator next time instead of doing it yourself? You'd still have to review what the orchestrator did but do feel like that would help the process?
      I'm looking forward to the project where I can go through the same process! Congrats again!

    • @EricTurnnessen
      @EricTurnnessen  Před 2 lety +1

      @@LukeTruanMusic I worked with an orchestrator this and it was essential for me to get this project done. I didn't cover too much of that process in the documentary because the orchestration part happened 10 years prior.

    This is a dream of mine, too! Thanks for sharing the experience - it makes me more determined than ever to do this myself! One question: I already orchestrate my music when composing - how important is it to work with an orchestrator to prepare for a session like this?

    • @EricTurnnessen
      @EricTurnnessen  Před 2 lety +1

      You're welcome! I'm glad it inspired you to do this as well. It's very approachable these days especially with a group like the Northern Film Orchestra. I do a certain amount of orchestration when I compose as well but I would say it's valuable to work with an orchestrator for a number of reasons. First thing is, the ensemble you end up being able to book and record with may not be exactly what you wrote for so some parts may need to be added. This will likely be the case if you're going to reduce the financial cost of recording with an orchestra by doing a shared session with one or more composers. This is what I did. If you can afford to book a whole 3 hours session for yourself then you'll be able to hand pick the ensemble. The second reason is as a protection of your investment to have another set of eyes being responsible for preparing the final scores. The cost of making any mistakes in notation, articulation, etc are significant so you really want to avoid any mistakes. In addition to having an orchestrator, I also had someone on the NFO team proof read the scores as a final check. There are other things the orchestrator or someone else with experience doing this can help with like preparing the parts for each player in the orchestra. Special considerations like where page turns should be are things that can be helpful and only come from experience. Ultimately my takeaway is that there are so many moving pieces combined with time pressure to make this happen so it was really valuable for me not to have all the responsibility fall on my shoulders ... especially given it was my first time. As I gain experience, I can see that changing and evolving.
