I went to St.Patrick Academy in Momence from 1962 to 1965 when it closed as a boarding school,I graduated from Holy Family Academy in Beaverville in 1966.At HFA we didn’t have a garden but grape vines in rows that we liked to walk through and in season the nuns would let us pick them to eat even though they had years and years before had been used for making wine for the St.Mary’s Church. The vines were in front of the grotto.❤I loved both schools and made good friends. The Sisters always treated us wonderfully.

Thank you so much for sharing that story! Did the nuns from St. Patrick Academy move to Beaverville too? Did you stay as a boarding student in Beaverville? It must have been a pretty busy place during that time?

@@willcountynews Only one nun from St.Patrick’s Academy went with us ,Sister Mary Providence. There were about 6 of us I think who went to HFA from St.Pat’s.My mom died in my senior year and the nuns were so kind to me,I’ll never forget those years.I boarded all through high school.

I think one reason so few girls transferred from St.Pat’s to HFA was Momence was a small town but had everything,a beauty parlor, dime store, hamburger joint, bowling alley, and the seminary let us use their pool a couple of evenings a month.Beaverville only had a tavern,a little general store, gas station and grainery. We pretty much entertained ourselves at HFA.

@@cathynyhoffmierlak6958 That makes sense. That must have been St. Jude's Seminary? Yes, Momence is for sure a bigger town with more businesses. Thanks for sharing this history! It's fascinating to me how many local stores so many of these towns had. Did HFA have any sports or after-school activities or was it pretty informal?
