- I just want to reiterate that my videos are not meant to be a tutorial. Simply a behind the scenes of how I create my products. I have not included every single step in this process and maybe one day I’ll feel more comfortable sharing my papermaking skills with you, but I’m not there yet.
In this video, it was my first time cooking Kozo and using Neri (the gooey slippery substance that’s a secret ingredient to making Kozo paper) so I really had expected to go all wrong but to my surprise, it went really well and I even learned so much from just this one process. Using Neri was so strange. I was honestly so fascinated by how it was able to separate and suspend the fibers in water as Kozo likes to clump together without it. But I really had no idea of how much to use. So in the first half of this video, I made paper in the usual way (western technique) dipped the mould only once. Towards the end of the session, I accidentally poured in way too much Neri. The vat was too full to add any more water, so I decided to wing it and to my surprise, the fibers were even more suspended. As I scooped, I could see it was only picking up such a thin thin layer of pulp. So I decided to try some thin sheets by scooping into the vat multiple times. From watching Japanese papermakers, I know they usually shake out excess slurry but I really couldn’t get that part right so I just let it drain through the mould. It did take time, a lot of time this way but truthfully I loved the results even more. I noticed that the sheets formed with this method were much more even and the edges were so much neater and cleaner. The deckle even lifted from the mould so much more easily than with the western method. I was left with so many theories to try out next time. I really want to create more thin like tissue paper or even thicker sheets all using the eastern papermaking methods. Just have to practice that shake-off!
Do not worry I am not harming any trees in the process, Kozo is the inner bark harvested from a plant.
Here is a detailed article explaining more.

Because I know will get many comments about how I should be using recycled paper (which I occasionally do ) I have linked a few articles on papermaking fibers for you. All the fibers I use are plant-based. What I want you to understand is that I am aiming to make high-quality papers, and that is why I like to experiment with good quality fibers too. They make better quality paper than what you get with recycled papers. I also don’t collect as many recycled scraps as fast as I would like. I also rarely film but if you're curious follow me on Instagram to see more of the things I don't post here.

I've never made my own paper, this tutorial is very useful
i love this video! my teacher also taught us how to make paper from kozo trees and it was a lot of fun!
but i wonder what paper (the wet ones under many waterbottles) you use to separate the just-made kozo paper ( in school we just used old newspaper haha!) thanks!
Hopefully you will come to that point soon. There s many of us making use a of very limited and free resources in our areas to make a living and it will come handy in developing countries like where I live with hardly any oportunities at all to have free tutorials, for instance in this matter. Thank you!
There are lots of resources already available online. Don't just search for videos but read articles or books too. The information in them is invaluable and plus they'll teach you better technique than videos found here on youtube 🤎
These papers are looking great 👍🏻 👍🏻. Shereena, thank you so much for sharing how to make kozo handmade paper. I can’t wait to use it 🙏🏻🙏🏻
Hello my dear. Thank you for watching and ordering them! I hope you will like them in person as well 😍
Absolutely Shereena, I just have time to sit down and will start journaling today 🤎🤎🤎
Wow I really love your videos 😍 could you please tell me, what kind of stuff that I need to make a handmade paper? Because I realllllly want to make it by myself. I have a lot of scrap paper in my house...
I love your videos so much! Would you mine sharing a tutorial on how you record and edit? Wishing you all the best!
It's very nostalgic for me to watch this. I guess that you have learnt this from Japan? :-) I used to make paper like this from milk/juice cartons. Amazing how you do it in abroad. just an interest, what is the white paper/material at 1:58 that you place between wet papers you made?
Thank you.
inspiring
When will you restock your journals? Absolutely in love with your work ethics and craft!
I restocked one of them 😊❤️
Nicely done
Thank you ❤️
Wow, they seem so soft and they are gorgeuos, you have so many materials!
I love this: 6:06⥰⥰⥰
hehe thank you! I can't wait to make more of them 😊❤️
Could we have a tour of your studio?! 🖤😍
I definitely intend to film this studio soon 😍
💗💗💗❣
Oh, so pretty 😍 I love papers and wanna make my owns
Btw, what kind of liquid u use at 1:10
Thanks a lot ❤
What boards did you use to press and sandwich the papers? It looks so water-resistant.
What is it that you used to size this. I'm curious.... They came out lovely
Oh so that is not to size. I used my normal internal sizing but I didn't film it. This is a deflocculant to allow the fibers to disperse evenly in water or else the long fibers would just clump together. And it also helps to slow the drainage. I used a synthetic version of Neri, called formation aid but a natural one would be from the root of a tororo-aoi plant. They're mainly used for bark fibers in eastern papermaking as the fibers are long but wouldn't work well with shorter length fibers like cotton. But it does not size your papers so you will need to use a sizing agent as well.
The paper is beautiful! Could you tell me where the ladle frame is from?😍😍😍
Oh its from a German papermaking supplier. I linked his website on my previous papermaking video ❤️
@@SoftlyStudio thank you very much!😘💕
beatifull molde and deckle, where is it from?
Wow! Your video is so amazing! Could you tell me please what is the liquid that appears in the minute 1:15?
It's synthetic Neri, or Formation Aid. I wrote a little about it in the description.
I am inlooove with the process T-T
Polyester felt alternative ❤️
@@SoftlyStudio thank you for answering :))
What a process! That whole setup looks like quite an investment 😂 How do you get the kozo? Is that something you can just order?
There’s a lot of info in the description.
Oh, you know how extra I can be 😂 No but I want to increase production and really make more paper or goods with my own papers. It's kind of the direction I'm leaning towards. I got the fibers from Carriage House Papers. But it actually comes from a paper mulberry plant which I think is quite popular in Asian countries.
Beautiful. I have two questions: in minute 7.59 what's this liquid? Is it starch? And what material are these black sheets you use to flatten your paper? Thank you very much for sharing your hard work making paper and editing them!! I know it's time consuming too!!
There’s a lot of info in the description.
It's synthetic Neri or formation aid. and yes I linked an article that can explain more in my description. The black sheets are just thick cardboard that I previously bought but were very thick to use as backing boards 😂 But I find them very useful to use in my press because they're quite stiff. You don't really need to press them separately but I like to do that because it helps soften and smooth both sides of each sheet.
@@marsbeads Thank you 🙏🏽❤️
Hi ... what kind of tools is that? Mean for pressing paper
Can anyone tell me the name of the sticky liquid which is used as a binder or paper pulp ???
Hi can you please share your measurement for sizing liquid thank you.
