- Let's put the Massey Ferguson 1840E Hydro to work discing the baked-hard field here in Eastern Kansas. Tillage in July around here is challenging as there's little moisture available.
I bought the 1840E to replace my Massey Ferguson 255, and so far, it has been perfect for my purpose. I did not buy it to use primarily for tillage, in this case, it was what I had here at the Froghair "City" location. Being that mine is a Hydro and for 97% of what I use it for it is the right transmission choice. If on the other hand, I was using this for tillage or field work in general, I would have gone with the gear 1840E.
I'll put up a video on the mods I've done on the Massey.
That type of soil turns into hard clots if to wet when plowed. I add a weight on top of disk for second round of disking. Now lift the disk up and pack clumps down with tractor tires or drag a heavy log. Then disk again it will be ready to plant. I've be dealing with that type of soil for 60 years. Enjoyed the video
Thanks for watching! In this case it definitely wasn't too wet, but if this ground had ever been turned, it was a long time ago and had been a horse pasture for many years without much attention. A touch of moisture would have been helpful! In the end, it worked up pretty nicely and no is sitting ready for frost seeding clovers and other plants for bee forage.
Tillage is hard work 👍🏻. Discing in July is hard. I am honestly surprised it did that good🙂. Summer tillage separates men from boys😉😂.
Hehehe - yes it does. There just ain't no mellowness to the soil under these conditions. That little disc does a decent job in reality, I need to add some bracing on the gang stanchions and a least all the zerks took grease.
It sounds like you were in high range, those hydros are fine loder work but definitely gesr transmission if you wa t heavy work. That is the same weight as a 9N they work that all day long. Ag tires and 8×8 trans i bet it wouldve been great.
I may have been in the 2nd range and agree a gear trans is MUCH better for this work!
Get you a used eight teen wheeler tire and put it in the middle of the disc and will help with the weight
Agreed - I recently upgraded to a 8ft Massey disc, I plan to retire this one!
Should 'v tried a gear transmission
No question that a geared transmission would have been better for this purpose, but the hydro is what I had and for 95% of what I use the tractor for the hydro is nice to have. The 2605H is geared, that's in the plowing vid.
You need a drag behind disc
My little pony tractor has what is effectively a drag disc. I jave some video of it working. I’d like to have a larger pull disc, but for no more than I really need or use it doesn’t make sense, so I get by with what I have. 😁
That hydro is killing you and uou you need a heavier tractor
No doubt! I will say is you are going to do much tillage, get a gear drive tractor. I’m going to do a review of the 1840e soon and that will be mentioned. I didn’t buy it for that purpose (happily) and was mostly interested in what it would do. I have a vid with my 21hp MF 1020 pulling the same disk (gear drive) and it was much better believe it or not!
@Froghair Farm yeah I didn't figure you bought it for that but it's fun to watch and see what they will do. I have a Massey 2800 series gear drive its heavy and puts down great power to the wheels.
@@acvfdfireman The 2800 gear would be great for this, I was curious how the 1840 would perform. It was quickly apparent that it isn't for tillage!! Thanks for the comments.
