Propex HeatSource HS2000 Heater LPG Campervan Gas Heater Test

  • Here is a short video showing how I test a Propex Heatsource HS2000 gas heater before installing it in my van (See links below for Propex heaters). I bought this Propex HS2000 heater used and although I was ensured it worked, I wanted to test the unit before proceeding to cut holes in the floor of my van. In the video I show how to wire up and test the unit. Thankfully this Propex 2000 Heatsource heater works fine so it was a good buy.
The Propex gas heater is an efficient way to heat a camper van or caravan without creating a noxious environment due to fumes. All fumes of the Propex gas heaters should be vented to the outside of the vehicle, which means there is no combustion inside to give off fumes.
If you buy a used Propex heater, whether it is a Propex Compact 1600, Heatsource 2000, Heatsource 2800 or any other model, you should test the unit before fitting it to avoid potential disappointment and as you can see from the video, it is really easy to quickly set up and test before carrying out the installation of the Propex has heater.

thanks for putting this video up. I have a few questions:
    1. have you fitted this to a van yet? if so...
    2. How efficient is it in practice, both for gas and 12v consumption? (I guess you can't answer this realistically at this time of year though).
    3. it sounds like the fan is quite noisy - is it noisy in whatever space you have it in once installed?

Hi yes I have fitted it to the van but not uploaded the video of the installation as I have needed to finish my other gas installations and battery install before I can fire it up in the van. I can only comment on efficiency from other videos and reviews I have seen, current draw is about 1.5A on the 2000 model, slightly higher on the older models up to 2a, gas they are supposed to use very little compared to something like a portable camping heater etc and my gas locker will be made big enough to fit the larger 6kg gas bottles so consumption shouldn`t be an issue. Noise wise this was a lot quieter on test than a 1600 I also had at the time and some of the noise is coming from the exhaust which will be external to the van so no noise there, but where I have fitted it, I have boxed it in with its own snug little unit, which will then sit under a boxed in bed so there should me minimal noise other than the airflow from the fans which can`t be helped with these heaters, but it should be a lot quieter than the test bench I had set up. I should hopefully have it fired up and the video uploaded soon as I am on to the last parts of the conversion install now.

I have this set up in my van, worked great last season, tested it recently and to the right I get fans blowing, to the left nothing, no red light or fans at all, turn thermostat dial after halfway I get a green light but still no fans.

@@averagerider92 Hi, Yes I ended up sending them the broken circuitboard, we had a problem with mice ages ago and they had peed on it and killed it, I spent around £165 on a new board, works great now. My system is a dual underslung tank system that has one factory fitted tank and an extra one on the other side of the van, its a VW Vanagon / T3 Westfalia. I'm in the UK bu the van is imported from the US.

Check my install video as that shows what it’s like when fitted. All night heaters are noisy to an extent as they all use fans to blow hot air around, diesel heaters also have the noise of a fuel pump meaning the gas ones can actually be quieter at times. Consumption is about 150gph if left running constant, which doesn’t happen thanks to the thermostat

If there is a click but no ignition, then you may have a blockage on a gas supply line or in the burner. If you contact Propex directly, they usually offer excellent after sales help & advise, even if the unit wasn't bought new

The propex heaters will run off either propane or butane so either is fine as long as the correct regulator is used for the correct gas

I'm wondering if you might be able to give me some advice, my mum has purchased a camper van with this model in it. Yesterday was the first time she has used it, I got it fired up after a little bit of playing around. Then in the evening I tried to get it going again and can only get a cold blow. I'm wondering does the ignition light off the battery? It looks like her solar battery and possibly leisure battery have gone flat? Could it be that?
    Or some wiring issue?
After switching off I was just getting a cold continuous blow until I disconnected power to the heater.
Any help and advice from anyone is appreciated 🙏

    • @TheCampervanBuilder

was the gas turned on at the bottle and manifold? Is there gas left in the bottle? If there is enough power to run the blower, there is enough power to create a spark of ignition so it is probably gas related
