--SMPOST--Samsung Odyssey G9 OLED | A MAC USERS NIGHTMARE - Věda a technologie
I agree about the curve. It’s one of the things that drew me to the previous versions. I’m still working with an older Alienware 3440x1440 monitor, but the Samsung was always on my radar because of that curve.
Thank you so much much for this in depth review. Getting mine tomorrow through Amazon.
Very welcome! Thank you so much 👍🏼
Could you put the G9 Neo and G9 OLED side by side and compare them? There are some comments on Reddit suggesting that the differences are not obvious or like night and day when directly compared (a lot of G9 Neo aspects are better). The first impression is often the strongest, where you may notice small improvements that seem gigantic. However, over time, perceptions can change, leading to doubts about whether your initial opinion was correct.
Congratulations on the 100k. Well deserved.
Ah thank you so much! Hard work and hoping to keep getting better!
Great review! Thank you for the info this helped a lot.
I liked your performance in the new Guardians of The Galaxy film, glad you mastered the arrow.
Just bought this a week ago. Love it so far, agree with having to slightly adjust when viewing either side of the monitor, but the only complain I have is the remote NOT having a source button. I have to manually change it and it makes it feel more like a TV than monitor.
Hey man, any update on the mac situation? I was about to throw this thing out my window lol. Glad I watched your video first
Looks like a lovely bit of kit… though when/if I was going to switch for dual to a single monitor I think not having a 1000R curve would be a deal breaker for me.
Great video. I don’t know if it makes it better having an 1800 R curve. I was hoping it would still have the 1000R curve. I was about to pull the trigger on the Arc 2nd Gen as it’s on sale for $1800. Any feedback from your experience from all the monitors you’ve used. I’ll do some very light gaming. Mostly using it for productivity (email, MS Teams, various documents).
Like the video! What small cupboard do you have on your desk? Really like the black/wallnut finish.
Which color did you use for the desk shelf? Looks nice! Thanks for the impressive video! 🙂
Just bought one... excited to try it out. Can't believe it was only $1235 on Amazon after their amazon creditcard 5% discount. Was absolutely shocked at the price.
Honestly I think I will purchase the mini led version, my studio isn’t a dark room , plus I prefer the 1800r bend of the prev version
Congrats on the 100K Subs.
Thanks man!
really liked your video. Could you also share which table and monitor arm you are using? I'm also looking for a table wide enough to place the OLED G9 on.
This thing is a beauty!!!!!
hey pete, great video! i was wondering if the G93 has the similar issue while you're porting HDMI on macbook air
I own the Neo g9 and love it... want to upgrade to this oled version, but only if it will come in the future with the same curvature.
Hey Pete, nice review! How is the reflective nature of the monitor? I understand it's a glossy one, but how bad is the glare?
I watch tv on my neo g9 for tv when I'm not gaming and so I'm happy for what they did for adding tv ..
Is there a joystick under the bottom edge of the screen like the Neo G9 or are you obligated so use the remote to do anything simple (like switching inputs), etc.
Pete! You are AMAZING!!! Thank you so much!! Just ordered my 49" OLED from your recommendation! Thanks for the links
Great video! Thank you!
I am ordering one! Although the 57” was launched now as well😮
Hey Pete - Great video. I just purchased the OLED G9 today and am getting frustrated with it not being friendly to my MacBook M2 Pro. I'm going to purchase the CalDigit dock you use to see if that helps. But how do you split the screen up as shown in your video? I'm using this for productivity improvements only.
First time I see one of your video and your reviews are awesome!
I just wanted to know if the color fringing is still an issue with these oled panel and if it was as important on mac as on windows( or exactly the same).
Other than that, Awesome stuff!!💪🏼💪🏼
Thanks man!
No issues with colour fringing I've seen on Mac (yet to be able to use on Windows, waiting for my gaming PC build!)
Appreciated!!
@@PeteMatheson Hi Pete, with regards the Ergoton arm, does it need there "Heavy duty" adapter like for the G9 Neo or is the standard arm ok due to this OLED version being lighter? Thanks
What is the structure of the color pixels? For text it is not typical to get great sharpness for text on OLED.
The glossy coating is probably whats making the panel seem sharper.
@PeteMatheson so what are your thoughts a year later? How is it with eye strain when using divinci resolve and other productivity apps? How about that pip thing? Can you use the samsung + ip tv in a corner while using the rest for something else? Have you played with a tablet as a 2nd source? You said it didn't support video over usbc? I've been comparing this against an lg 49in and i saw one of these on display at a store with a single input and the image and build quality were astounding- just nervous about the shortcomings on usb c and pip along with the curvature at that width
I like it a lot but is it possible to attach it directly to the wall with some brackets or something similar?
I own an original odyssey g9 but it stopped working after roughly a year. I loved it while it lasted but I am not happy with samsung. I understand I am one of few that it has happened to but I am skeptical about buying another monitor from Samsung. That bring said this oled version looks incredible! Should I feel safe pulling the trigger?
How do you think this compares to LG ultrawide monitors. I mostly do design work so colors are necessary for me but I also game... sometimes. But I debating which is better.
How’s the text clarity? The version 1 of oleds had that weird text fringe. Is it better or worse or same?
I was dreaming of a G9 OLED since the relase and order of the G9 Neo. But what should I use it for without G-Sync??
Nice video and certainliy one of the best OLED monitor! But the deal breaker for me is the lack of one USB-C cable solution for both Display + Power. I've been using my Dell Ultrasharp 32" inch monitor for years with that one USB-C cable for both display + power and it's been an absolutely bliss. Samsung wired DEX works flawlessly. Windows PC, Mac, iPad, iPhone, Android phones, etc, all can connect conveniently to my Dell monitor with that one simple and elegant USB-C cable. Why not Samsung OLED G9?!! Come on Samsung.
How do you get 5120x1440 to work on your Mac? Does that only work with the display port?
Do you have to use the cal digit in order to connect your MacBook air m2?
Do you know any height adjustable desks that can support its weight?
@PeteMatheson bro the bottom port is USB-C and it's for laptops. The port is labelled "PC" on the monitor. I have this exact same monitor...
Works as a USB Hub and not for display :(
Hi have you had any burn in? are you still using it for desktop apps ?
What size desk would you recommend for the 49” model. I want to have enough room for the monitor along with my PC tower without it looking to cramped.
Hello, Pete! Cool review!
What brand is your webcam on the monitor?
ah that's the Insta360 Link!
I bought this monitor but will be returning it as the 1000R curve is so much better. This new monitor causes eyes fatigue
Can I use a simple usb c to displayport adapter with my mac M2 air to get full use out of this monitor mate?
Have you tried a USBC to DP cable? I have that connected to my Macbook and my 4k Monitor and I get 144hz no problem.
Hello Pete! Thank you for your review videos, I watched the ones on the other odyssey G9's and the one on the 45" LG OLED monitor. I'm on the search of a monitor and after watching your videos I'm confused now because I don't know which one to choose! Would you recommend the 45" OLED over de G9 OLED because of the better compatibility with Mac?
the 45" LG is too low resolution imo. 3440x1440 at that size is just too low. 84 PPI vs 108 PPI on the G9 OLED.
@@toxicturkeyy thanks for the info!
Thanks for the info. You confirmed my suspicions about the less aggressive 1800R curve. I would have upgraded my Neo g9 to the OLED version if it had a 1000R curve.
? I think everyone bis wrong smaller valve means more curve 1000 has more curve than 1800..... The oled one has less curve than neo g9 with va panel
@@hanswurst3811 That's what I meant by the 1800R curve being less aggressive. Smaller value = more curve. As far as I can see most people agree with that
Hey Pete!
I’ve got a m1 MacBook Pro, what 49 inch screen do you recommend out of the lg 5k or the Samsung g9?
Thanks brother!
Hey, first of all, this is the first video review of the screen talking more about productivity than gaming, and that is what i m looking for. Can you please confirm whether you can use 2 output from the caldigit ts3+ into the monitor and then have the monitor run both signals PBP to simulate 2x27" 1440p screens? I have the monitor still unopened btw :D
Hey were you able to get an answer to this?
@@michaelantoine2800 not from this channel/CZcams, but I was able to use my Dell WD22TB4 to simulate 2x27 PBP. I should try with the caldigit ts3+ when I have time. But since g95sc doesn't have USB c input, I would have to use a USB c to HDMI...
which cable do you recommend using with a mac mini?
How do I remove the monitor from the supplied stand, I would like to put this monitor on a monitor arm but unsure on how to correctly remove the monitor from the stand safely and correctly as this is not documented in the manuals. Any advice please?
Hey, will it work at 240Hz with a Mac studio m2 max?
Do they have the G-sync on the OLED??
I thought only the G9 & G9 Neo have G-sync, not the OLED...
For me it worked to have a multiview with a hdmi and display port at the same time
Ah crap! I've played around with it more this morning and yeah it's working for 50/50 PBP.
I'll edit that part out and correct the description! Thanks for this dude 👍🏼
Swing and a miss 😬
Am i correct in thinking this has no sound output port? Wild
I have a Mac Pro 2013 (trash can) and I'd like to get this monitor. Will they work well together? If so, which connections would I use to connect them?
1440px in hight is too short for most design tasks, especially if you do print design or UX. But a nice gaming monitor for sure.
Are you sure this monitor have g-syng? I don‘t see on the homepage from Samsung in the desrciption this write about it?
yeah i loved the look but all the cons really put me off, im a mac guy.. im coming from an old 27" imac so i really want to keep the same vertical height and just make it wider, is there anything out there that does this or do i need multiple 27" monitors?
I have an external camera/Mic that I'm trying to connect via usb-c and it doesn't recognize it. Any tips there? What camera did you have installed on yours and how did you get it to work?
Amazing channel and thank you for all the monitor reviews. How do I connect this to my Mac book pro m3 using thunderbolt for charging and display instead of using hdmi ? Really looking forward to just use one wire for connection.
So they actually released a slightly newer model that has USB C with power delivery, that fixes basically all of the issues I have with connecting a Mac!
I am looking to buy this monitor (Oled) version. I just can't get over the wide black line all around the outside of the screen. It's seriously keeping me from buying like 4 of them.
I don't know if I should buy the smart version or not. what do you think?
Hi have one big question. In split screen mode/dual sources like PS5 and pc does it still give you 240fps on both or does it drop down to 144 on each side like the neo G9 did. If anyone knows 😊
Is the monitor performing Pixel Refresh? Are you notified about it? It's called screen optimization in Samsung. There is this bug for many months without any resolution. If they don't change it most of the monitors will get retention issues and occasionally burn-in. I am an owner too, having experience with many OLED panels from LG that this feature was working fluently and never faced burn-in issues with them.
Some strange choices on this monitor. I'm looking for a monitor with USB-C video in because I use DEX quite a lot sometimes from my fold 3 and a single cable to charge and display would be ideal. I notice one of the menus was bragging about DEX but the best you could do is, i'm presuming, wireless DEX which I find annoyingly laggy.
I wonder if a USB C to HDMI or DisplayPort adapter cable would work.
Is this the one from Costco? Does it light up in the back?
Is the reduced price only for Europe? I bought my OLED and it delivered like 9 days ago. Im debating on returning now and waiting to see if the price in the US drops to a similar price as in Europe. I paid full price during pre-order. I think I have like 14 days from receiving the monitor to start the return process which would be this Thursday!
That’s strange! What’s the US price? I haven’t heard any rumours of other price drops, or reasons as to why they changed pricing so close to launch here. Tough decision!
Hi! To whoever is reading this, probably a dumb question, but…is this better than getting two monitors? I’m a translator and I need to work with several windows and tabs opened at the same time, which option would you recommend? Considering the prices as well. Thanks :)
I have an M1 Studio, What adapter do I have to buy to get the 240Hz?
One question sir. Can you split screen and game 240hz while having OBS/discord on the other screen? Or does it split 120/120hz…. Nobody seems to answer this question. If you answer I’ll subscribe.
would you choose this G9 OLED over the LG OLED 45In
What monitor stand on you using can you please link?
I wish they would bring back the 1000r curve for the next iteration!
Same!
please add link of screenshot of Cinemascope 21:9 content on the 32:9 OLED. Avatar (aspect ratio 16:9 / 17,1:9) was not the best example.
Can you use this for stock market trading?
Can't thank you enough for tweeting about the £500 price drop on release day. I instantly arranged a return. Not had much luck with Samsung delivering a new one that hasn't been opened already, but that's a long story 😴
Very welcome! I was lucky someone told me about it or I wouldn't have seen it either!
Sending out opened boxed - perhaps because so many people are returning them for the discount? lol.
@@PeteMatheson Probably, they must've had a LOT of returns because my exchange for the opened one was also already opened! £1,400 for an opened unit is just insane to me, from Samsung of all places too. I'm currently in the process of arranging another exchange... hopefully this one won't be opened
Thank you! I have been waiting for this review as I am thinking of upgrading from the Neo G9.
Can I please seek your input on the LG UltraGear 45" which you previously reviewed and this G9 OLED? How do they perform side by side on:
Resolution and text during productivity?
800R vs 1800R?
Monitor dimensions - the LG is a bit taller while the G9 OLED has the greater long width (albeit less immersive when it comes to immersion)?
The LG's matte screen vs the Samsung's glossy?
How would you now rate the two for gaming and productivity?
I’d say the G9 for productivity due to the PPI.
The resolution on the LG felt very big.
But the LG for pure gaming.
@@PeteMatheson Thank you. What about as an all-rounder upgrade to the Neo? For both productivity and gaming? On the Neo, I can fit 2 big windows side by side, or say 3-4 smaller windows for productivity. Does the LG have that option albeit different arrangement due to the greater height? Is the glossy screen on the G9 much better than the matte for the OLED display?
i am upgrading when it is full 360, or the wall infront is my limit
My mac mini is connected via display port cable through a connecter hub. Refresh 120 Hertz, max resolution 3840x1080... and no sound. Monitor refuses to play any sound from the computer. It plays sound from internal tv options, but not from the computer. Any suggestions out there?
Hey Pete! I know it's an old video, but what monitor arm are you running? I've been struggling to find one that can deal with the weight
You want this one... geni.us/ERGOTON-MONITOR-ARM
@PeteMatheson I really though there was no chance you'd reply to such an old video! Really really do appreciate it 🙏 Thank you
Question : does the monitor stretch the image on a ps5 ?
Best monitor I ever had
@PeteMatheson Does 15 inch M2 MacBook Air Supports this display?
hi quick question can I connect my ps5 and series x to this .
I think the perfect size for UltraWide monitor is 34 or 38", 21:9 for pc desk use. If is biger (like this 49,32:9) from that I need turn my head to see the left and right site of the monitor and this is not practical for FPS shooter games.
who’s even asking for these dumb super duper ultra wide aspect ratio monitors? they could have just released version 2 of the 34” with the new panel and called it a day
At first glance I’d say it looks amazing for productivity or racing games or flight simulator. I don’t think I’d like it for shooters or adventure games for some reason. Doesn’t it feel like your looking at the game world from inside a tank?
Anybody got an idea at which position when using the stock stand the "slide button" should be just under the attachment to the screen?
Very disappointed when I seen that the spec were 1800R curvature. Having had both the CRG and G9, the curvature makes a big difference in quality of view for gameplay and everyday usage.
Honestly just don’t like the 1440p resolution, I want a 4K G9 Oled hopefully it’s comes out at the same time as the RTX Titan or rtx 5090. I think Samsung should consider making the G9 Oled a bendable monitor like the LG OLED Flex or Xeneon Flex to fix the curvature preference. Bendables are great because you can adjust the curve to your liking
I never understood the brightness thing for oled monitors.... I have never had an issues with my eyes screaming at me to turn the brightness down.. Am I just not using HDR and everyone else is? Im confused because this screen is way more bright than need be to begin with and looks amazing.
Could someone enlighten me about the brightness thing? Im trying to not be ignorant and maybe I just havent seen the light (lol) yet...
You said that this monitor looks even more sharper then g9 neo. A lot of people talk about text clarity issues, so i was wondering how would you describe text clarity ?
no way this is sharper than, for example, the apple studio display. Pete said its only 108 ppi, text would barely be legible at that low ppi. Likely will be blurry and if you’re already used to 200+ ppi (for example that built in apple macbook pro laptop display or the apple studio display) then this monitor will likely seem like its less clear/sharp text wise.
Would you use one of these, or three 27" 1440p displays?
One of these!
the oled version doesn't support clear text. Do you have any issue with text clarity while doing productivity work like word processing, spreadsheets, mail?
What does “not support clear text” mean exactly?
Between this and lg 45 which you think is better for productivity media comsuption and gaming? Thanks a lot
Personally I'd prefer the Samsung over the LG. I love the 49". I found the 55" Ark to be too much - but I'm about to try out the 57" G9 Neo so will figure out if that's too big!
I have a small desk and can't use two screens. I occasionally game and also am writing a thesis. I'm not sure which one to get. G8 or G9, ultra wide or super ultra wide. I could use some real world usage insights.
With a small desk, the 49 or 57 wide might be TOO wide and overhang the desk?
Can you pls link the cables and the dock ? I have it connected to a mac studio but it doesnt recognzie the sceeen after sleep and i need to plug in and out the cable
Sure!
I've added the dock: geni.us/yLOUA
Then you just need a standard DisplayPort to DisplayPort cable and that should get you up and running at 120hz and 5120 x 1440 👍🏼
The lack of picture by picture or Picture in picture is a no no for me, thank you for the heads up! Great Video!
Such a shame when it should be fully capable of doing so! Silly Tizen OS
Could a firmware update fix this though?
@@DisforDamion87 I’m not sure, but hopefully.
@@PeteMatheson This monitor does support dual input using multi view. Its in the settings bar you showed when Tizen was "stuck", you were hovering over it.
I’m confused. They say there’s no PBP but there is something called ‘Multi-View’ - isn’t that pretty much the same thing? I’d like to see a demo of how it works, and whether it can do 2 x HDMI sources side by side, or whether it’s limited to Tizen apps and one other HDMI or DP source.
Hey do you still need the ekstra heavy duty for that arm with that new monitor ? Kind regards Thomas
It's still a pretty heavy screen - other monitor arms *might* work, but I checked some other fairly heavy duty arms and they were just over their weight rating.
The Ergotron mount manages the weight easily!
Hello! Did you need an adapter to mount it to the monitor arm?
@@aaronkwan9625 nope since it is not that heavy so no need of it :)
