#fujifilm #fujilens #fujifilm18-55
Very elaborate study with great detail and effort. And finally simplified the process for selecting the lens. Thanks for sharing.💐
I checked all my Fuji lenses about 3 weeks ago ,after I noticed some very out of focus areas at the edges of my 18-55 lens at 18mm. I taped a £10 note to a wall and used a tripod , taking different images at each marked focal length , with OIS on and off. I expected the sharpest image to be around f5.6. , but to my surprise it was definitely at f11. I also did notice that the OIS was affecting the edge sharpness, even hand held at 18mm , so it is currently switched off. I made a small table of sweet spot apertures , I now keep in the bag, it’s a matrix for the 18-55,10-24 & 55-200 at each focal length. Your video has given me the confirmation that the results for my gear seem fairly comparable. Many thanks Ian.
I noticed the same with my XF 18-55mm lens. At 55mm f/4 the blur on the right edge of the image is most noticeable. At 55 mm f/11 the lens seems to be at it best producing a noticeably sharper result that I would describe as good/acceptable. Regarding OIS, does the body that you use has IBIS? Any chance you uploaded your handy matrix anywhere for public use?
@@iliv I don’t have IBIS on the XT2 . I can mail you the matrix if you leave a mail address
Great insight into the lens. I have to say the greatest feature for me stick it in manual focus mode and run 18mm (28mmff) for street it is absolutely brilliant in this mode. Love the lens.
Ian, that’s super interesting finding about f11 being the sharpest aperture setting. Well done and very helpful!
I like this objectively. for me it is a very good mix of image quality and weight. I'm looking forward to the next videos of your objectven, especially the xf 50-140 and why you're using it. I use the xf 55-200.
Thanks for this Ian enjoyed your review of the 18-55! its a beaut of a lens.
Amazing video. Thank you so much for this detailed review!
Great review, very informative, thanks!
I have been shooting at f 11 for a couple of years now(travel, landscape, etc) and I really love the outcome from this lens. Like you, I had it in pouring rain, snow, etc and it didn't stop working. The only reason why I would upgrade to the 16 55 os the constant f2.8 because I shoot a lot of sport lately. Other than that coupled with any fuji body it will produce some amazing images!
Awesome 👍👍
Thank you Ian for this video. It was the deciding factor in me buying the 18-55 and I got it at $289 US. It is brand new and was a part of a kit. I am going to use it for video only....as I have the 16-80 and the 16 1.4 along with all the Viltrox lenses for the Fuji. I'm using the X-T4. My extreme wide angle is the Zeiss 12mm 2.8.
Very informative, just the type of information I was looking for. Thanks
Glad it was helpful!
A unique perspective! It's reviews like this that make me want to go back to using my 18-55 even with my Fuji primes! Thanks, Ian!
Thanks for sharing your 3 years of experience with this lens. I have one and have thought as it's "only a kit lens" that I should upgrade to "proper" prime lenses but you've put my wallet at rest. Oh, and Subbed. Cheers!
Another great video. Love my 18-55. Had it for years now (since 2015). I planned to switch it out for the 16-55 in 2018. But soon as the 16-55 arrived i got buyers remorse. The 16-55 was also too heavy, unbalanced my X-E2s. Plus i'm a lousy photographer and couldn't justify it anyway. Thank the lord the retailer took it back and i never sold the 18-55....phew!
👍👍
Best "kit lens" I have ever had, punches way more than it's price
Totally agree 👍👍
I looooooooove this lens . Omg
When you consider the used market it's an incredible bargain.
@@Nearest_Neighbor oh yes, going for just a little over 300 USD pristine condition I thought it was new
Enjoyed your sage advice. Great video!!! Thanks for sharing.
Thanks for watching! 😊👍
Nice video. I love it when you realize that something that you already own is still top notch!
With all the tech wizardry nowadays, yes it’s nice a lens or body, still can do the job in spades.
Just ordered the xt4 with the 18-55. I initially went for the 16-55 but when I discovered that there isn’t ois in the lens I changed the order. I would be using the fuji mainly for video and use fullframe for pro photo but how I see this I could potentially bring the fuji with me on assignment and do some proper photography as well. Nice testing and thanks for the effort.
Ps. Testing after 3 years is perfect. It just shows how durable it is!
Nice work on and analyze on this lens man!
/Anton from Sweden
This lens has been my closest confidant for 3 years now and have alot to thank it for - it allowed me to experiment and try new things. But yh, just kinda ended up growing out of it once i started discovering my style. And this goes for any kit lens really - they're too general, capable of just about anything in small doses. So for beginners, kit lenses are amazing, and this one in particular is a beast.
I love this lens and find quality very good. Been using Fuji for just less than a year now and am super impressed with the company.
I've had my 18-55mm for a week now. I was getting frustrated with soft and inconsistent pictures. It LOOKS like the issue is that I needed to change my IS (image stabilisation) setting in my X-T30 menu from Continuous to Shooting Only. I'd read a couple of posts online where people had tried that, compared pictures, and found it better. Something to do with continuous creating a build-up of vibration that doesn't matter when filming so much but hurts still pictures. I've only tried the difference today and THINK I can spot a benefit. My pictures are really clear today, perhaps helped by the bright weather outside ... or by this potential fix. Will see.
I presume this lens firmware is up to date?
@@barnettgs Yeah.
any updates?
@@FajriSiddiq After about three months with the 18-55mm I basically gave up on it. It packs a lot of power in a small package, but it was still proving unreliable in two ways. First, it often produced slightly soft images and I couldn't work out why. Second, the variable aperture became a pain and I got a bit fed up of the routine of having to bring my aperture back to f2.8 whenever I zoomed out, as well as not having any aperture markings on the lens and the aperture ring going clockwise or anticlockwise infinitely (taking away the tactile ability to use my hand to tell when I'm at either end). So I bit the bullet and upgraded to the bigger 16-55mm combined with an X-T4 for the IBIS. It's a heavier combination but great and everything flows much better, with consistently sharp results. The only main downside of my new combination, I'd say, is that if I still want my f1.2 prime in my bag too it all starts to get a little heavy for walking around all afternoon - but still ok. It's also much more conspicuous, size-wise, but I'm quite liking having that 'beefy camera vibe' on the streets :)
There is a recent update for this lens, saying it would improve the imaging resolution, something to do with the mechanical and electronic shutter. Amazing considering that they still release new firmware for this 10 years old lens
Really useful review! I've been trying to shoot some video with the 35mm F2 and had to just shoot in manual because the focus breathing is so bad. Think I'll be purchasing the 18-55mm now. Cheers
Great review! I think that “turn off the OIS when you’re using a tripod” adage came from Canon. I shot that system for years and the results were very noticeable if you forgot to do this. 5 years into Fuji, I still try to remember to turn off OIS when I’m using a tripod. Old habits...
relaxing and informative review, well done my friend.
Glad you enjoyed it. Thanks buddy 👍
Very interesting video. I used mostly my 18-55mm with f8, but now I will check it with f11. Look forward to the results. So thx again and keep going with your videos. 😎👏👏👏
Glad it was helpful! 👍
Cracking little lens, I had the 16/55 2.8, but it's such a lump with no ais.
very interesting - especially the finding at f11 as I'd have though diffraction would start to be seen by then (it is on my 10-24 and I think that's what you were seeing in your test).
I had the 18-55 when I bought my first Fujifilm camera (an X-T20, but didn't keep it as I rarely shoot in that "standard" range. From what I recall it was an excellent lens though and superbly built :-)
Just bought me X-e3 with that lens, and was really positivly suprised when i compared it to my usual Pentax 35mm limited, wich is a very good lens. The Fujinon is not far behind. Thats pretty amazing.
The first thing that I noticed was the excellent contrast when I first picked it up
Of the few zooms that I own, this is the one most frequently use, with the 50-140 at a distant second . I can not imagine ever selling it. This lens has saved my bacon more times that I can recall. If there was to be an update, I would hope that Fuji would add weather sealing, as the did with the 10-24 (which I also own).
What a great video. Very useful and informative.
Glad it was helpful! 👍👍👍
Nice review Ian. I was planning to buy the S10 bundled with the 18-55, but have decided to pick the E4 instead (like the form factor better and the S10 is way overpriced here). However, since the E4 only comes with the 27mm lens, I'll have to buy this separately. How crucial is IS for simple CZcams-like videos shot indoors? Asking because I plan to buy the 18-55 or the Tokina 23mm1.4.
Great idea to share the images. I notice you have some dust or hair on the sensor, you can see it at smaller apertures, above the right hand side of the Polaroid camera.
Very informative. I have the 18-55 and its my go to lens. Unless you are super critical it's as good as any prime in its range.
For my perspective , also a big recommendation for 55-200.if you use 55-200 you get the same quality as 18-55. Also for the movie, it's amazing and just as good the AF as 18-55. And even better background blur effect. even better OIS and lens is probably sharper than 18-55. 55 is f3.5
Thanks Ian. Very useful regarding F11. I have the XF 18-55 mm lens and the XF 35 F2 lens with a Fuji XT30. I have just bought a tripod to try some landscape. Will certainly try F11. like you I assumed F8 or even F 5.6 would be better.
Thanks buddy, might be different on your copy though 👍👍
Thanks so much for this. I was going to get a prime lens but will trust my 18-55 more and check out F11.
Great to hear! 👍👍😀
Thank you for the review
Wonderful review. Great lens...we use two of them for video.
awesome 👍👍
Great lens! Absolutely love it!
Same here! 👍
I own the 16-55 and TWO copies of the 18-55. That was my first lens in 2013 and I still love it. Well, that and my 35 1.4 and 50-140
👍👍
Great info as always Ian, thanks. Interestingly I found that my first experiences of this lens was that the OOF foliage showed shocking worm effects and nasty bokeh. So I stopped using it and use my 10-24 more. Then I bought the 16-55 and again not had those issues. I will try again woth the 18-55 as I know Lightroom has changed as well as my processing technique but I guess the bokeh will be just the same. This is such a shame for me as I do love to shoot wide at natural subjects in and around my landscapes.
I’ve found 18-55's bokeh is pretty gnarly too - the highlights a weird ⨀ look to them. It’s a property of the lens, it seems, not the way the images are processed - it does the same thing in Capture One and in Fuji’s JPEGs.
As ‘kit’ lenses go this one is very good, possibly the best I’ve ever used. As an outright lens it’s good but not excellent, although it does represent great value for money. I ended up selling mine and getting the 16-80mm which I don’t regret at all. I was content with the trade off of aperture at the wider end for a significantly wider focal range and the quality (of my 16-80 anyway) is superb - it holds its own against my 35mm f2. With the price differences it is difficult to recommend one over the other. Personally I’d rather have the 16-80 however the (at time of writing) approx £200 difference (used) is significant and some may prefer to buy the cheaper 18-55 and add a fast prime.
did the same. I never quite gelled with 18-55 ( a fine lens). I just wanted a bit 'more' out of it and the 16-80 is probably my favourite all-rounder. I'm a one-lens kind of person, so I'm either out with this or I'll grab a manual brighter aperture lens.
I would love to try the 16-80, looks like a cracking lens 👍👍
I have had this lens since summer of 2013 - so almost 8 years. With the firmware updates it focuses faster than new and everything is smooth. Yes, you can push the zoom accidentally while touching the front element, but that was the case from day 1, actually. In my opinion, the lens is a little too soft in the corners especially at 18 or 55 and lots of diffraction if you stop down past f8. I would say it's usably a 20 - 50 mm if you care about sharpness in the corners.
Thanks Kent 👍
Interesting to know about 11.0 aperture being the most sharpest. If you ever get hold of X-E4, please do review along with 18-55 on that new body. I want to see how big lens will work in that small body. Confused to enter fujifilm system by getting T-30 or X-E4.
I think it's a great lens to pick up as a beginning photographer or if you're switching systems. The price it goes for when included as a kit lens is great. I never liked mine however and that was mostly due to the focal length, I found 18 to always be a hair too tight and 55 to be not long enough. I would not pick this lens up at full price as there are other better options for similar money.
Some very handy tips for the 18-55mm when i do eventually be allowed out i'll try f11 on landscape as you say f8 is the norm for me cheers Ian
Thanks buddy 👍👍
Pondering getting the X-T30 with this kit lens. Thank you. This lens will be just fine for me.
Its a great combo, You'd definitely be happy with it. I know I have. :)
Great video just sold me on the kit lens 😄
Hope you enjoy it!👍👍
Very good, thanks Ian. I'd love to see you compare the 18-55 with the 16-80 and 18-135. I'm trying to determine which one to use as my single "travel lens" when I want to go very light.
Yeah, i would like to try the 16-80, i might get a loaner in the future and try it out 👍👍
@@ian_worth id love to see it as well
Me too!
Very detailed long term review. 😀.👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽.
Can you please tell which one is sharper among 18-55 and 16-80mm ?
I've not tried the 16-80, but would like to give it a try soon 👍👍
Very useful video. I’ve had this lens for a good few years (my first Fuji lens), but still got some good insights from this. On the comparison with the Viltrox 23mm, I guess in a real-world walkabout scenario, the OIS on the 18-55 would allow it to outperform the Viltrox on sharpness, by minimising any softness due to camera shake.
Thanks Mark 👍👍
great vid .thank you .
Great video! It was really helpful.
What’s your opinion regarding that Viltrox 33mm vs the Fuji 35 f2? Which one would you recommend as the first 50mm (equivalent) lens? Thanks!!
I use both, the viltrox has a slight magenta cast but its a better lens overall in my opinion. That being said, the Fuji 35 is smaller, so it depends what your priority is 👍
Excellent video as always Ian. Just one question, and that relates to the weather resistance or otherwise of lenses. I recently tried to trade in an older Sigma lens and it was rejected due to fungus in the lens. I was surprised at this as I have never got any of my lenses wet, however it seems a fairly common problem. Just wondered if you have had any issues bearing in mind you take them out in some fairly wild weather, and they do get wet? I also read that silica gel packets help - I may need to start using these.
Haven't noticed any fungus yet, I just try to leave the bag open and let them dry naturally if they get wet 👍👍
very cool Ian! btw, do you use the XS10 for photogrphy these days?
First long exposure I took on my xt4 and 16 mm f 1.4 came out blurry. Confused at first but new camera and had not turned off IBIS. Relieved it was that simple and not a problem with new camera.
tested this in Sundays video czcams.com/video/jUBUz60QcLE/video.html 👍👍
Good review..I am planning to buy XT4 which has IBIS. if I buy 16-55 f2.8 which doesn't have IS, does it make any difference in the video or photo about image stabilization? Or do you suggest both lens and camera should have IS? Please suggest. Thanks
I'm a big fan of primes but I'm thinking to get this for travel. During daylight I'd likely be using stopped down apertures anyway so I don't need f1.4
This + a fast prime seems like a good travel kit
Great video! Yes, the 18-55 is a very nice lens, indeed. Btw, you´ll notice the difference between IS on and off at longer exposures- 1sec and longer. I certainly have noticed it and the exposures with the IS on were noticably blury. So I, for one, can from my own experience testify that it´s beneficial to turn IS off for long exposures on tripod :)
Agreed. I’ve also found that IBIS makes even more of a difference. I shoot night-skies and, having inadvertently left IBIS on, the stars looked like I’d literally kicked the tripod!
I tested this in Sundays video czcams.com/video/jUBUz60QcLE/video.html 👍
@@ian_worth Wow, this is very intersting, indeed! I swear I had blury photos with exposures of 10-20 seconds with the x-t2 + 50-140 f2,8 lens. But it´s fair to say I was doing light trails from cars and maybe...the IS tried to stabilaze that...!?
Hello Ian can you please suggest which nd filter to purchase for this lens cause i can't figure out
I also noticed how bad the 35mm f/2 is with focus breathing, however I never realized how good the 18-55mm is. I need to experiment more with this.
I love this lens had it since 2018. It’s been all over Asia and it’s just a work horse landscape, family hols, astro etc. I have never even took it to f11. I wonder if any of the other zooms do this?
👍👍
Conteúdo incrível .. show!!
Well done!
cheers 👍
Hey Ian, enjoying your videos very much. Do you plan to buy / make a video about Fujis new 70-300 lens once it‘s available? Would love to hear your opinion about it.
Yes I do, hoping to get a loaner soon 👍👍
@@ian_worth Thanks for the reply
Something else that can help with sharpness when using a tripod, apart from turning OIS off, is using the electronic shutter, since it completely eliminates the vibration from the mechanical shutter. It’s not much of an issue at shorter focal lengths, but for longer ones (70mm and up) it can make a significant difference.
How do you turn that off?
Just came here from a video Ian did where he tested the idea that having OIS on when on a tripod can affect sharpness. You may want to check that out (or run your own tests). He didn't find any difference.
@@scottl8416 There´s a menu on your camera to change things... duh.
@@scottl8416 You switch to electronic shutter. In the menu. Just know you can't use flash with electronic shutter.
Tom Photo made a video about this lens, in which he confirms as well that the lens is sharpest at f11 throughout the entire focal range. So if you have this lens and want the sharpest picture possible without out of focus background effects, pick f11 (assuming there is sufficient light available).
Love it 💯 %
👍
This is exactly what i was looking for.
awesome 👍
Excellent lens!
Just tried right now, and you're right. Much sharper at 11. So....should we trust the multiple charts on websites analyzing "sweet spots"? I guess no, and we should make our own tests. Thank you SO much.
The quality of this video is good… what did you use?
I'm assuming that this will work on the xt-1? I'm looking for a lens to buy for this model.
Mine is great at shorter distances but totally unusable at infinity. I hope Fujifilm will be able to calibrate it.
The 16-50 3.5 will focus much closer and closeups at 16mm are very sharp. Not so with the 18-55. Also on your leaf study, where were you focussing?
Where did you focus exactly in the frame
I've done f9 mostly, but heck, I'll try f11. That surprised me as well.
Can someone tell me why my aperture ring on the lens is not working? I have the small switch on the aperture sign, but I still can't set the aperture manually with the aperture ring... Please help
Im going to have to thank you, I was pulling my hair out deciding between the 18-55 and a viltrox and to see this kit lens trade blows with it has really helped make up my mind.
if you don't need the wide aperture then its a no brainer 👍👍
13:38 I think that fuji cameras have a setting for diffraction compensation in menu. It was activated probably.
Wow I got the kit lens with my XT3 late last year on sale and immediately purchased the 35mm 1.4 and the Viltrox 23mm 1.4 . After watching the video I clearly jumped the gun (LOL) Time to slap it back on the camera and take it out !!!
An interesting video Ian, Ive the same 18-55mm lens and have found it sharper at F11 also. I have the 50-200mm lens and find it sharper than the 18-55 above when above 50mm.
I do too, and more contrasty. The 50-200 has a punchy edge over the other one in video.
I agree .... the 18-55 is weak in the 50-55 range, whereas the 55-200 is very good at its wide end
interesting 👍👍🙏
I also find no advantage in using for video the XF18f2 over the 18-55, bar the extra f-stop.
I'm planning to buy X-S10 soon. It will be my first camera ever . I'm torn between picking it up with this one or with 15-45mm f3.5-5.6. I don't care about weather resistance and build quality a lot, but I would like to get a great IQ from my first lens. The price differense makes it a much harder decision.
I actually just ordered my first Fuji camera. I was able to pick up a lightly used 18-55mm for $325 USD. From the personal research and countless reviews I have read, I think the 18-55m would be a great choice. Excellent focal length, and the f2.8-4 is fantastic aperture range.
You can pick up a used copy of the 18-55 for a very good price. That would be my choice 👍👍
If this lens is purchased with the camera at the discounted price it is a no brained. I love mine and I use it regularly. Pretty much I will use it unless I need more shallow DOF or I need to go wider than 18. I have never had an issue with the image quality even though I have not tested it thoroughly. I try not to pixel peep my images too much. As long as the quality is good enough other things play a bigger role in capturing the best possible photo. Probably if I were shooting events I would get the 16-55 but that sucker is heavy and big. I was surprised to see such a color shift in the Viltrox lenses I have been considering getting the 33 but that color shift is ugly. Thanks for the video.
You're welcome 👍👍👍
Good stuff here Ian. Do you have any experience with the 16-55?
Not yet! 👍👍
would this lens be good enough to do Real estate videos with for detailed shots?
The original Plastic Lens Hood is PITA. A much better substitute is the newer Haoge LH-X13 or LH-X13B variants (latter one being round, instead of square) metal built with cap. I like my XF 18-55, it's glued basically on my X-T1.
/edit install always the latest FW, which is v3.23 for that Lens since 2020. I use this Lens since my X-E1, than turned it over to my T1. Because the X-E Series is better with small, fast prime lenses.
Thanks!
Thank you for your generosity my friend 👍😊
With sigma 18-50 2.8 (similar weight) coming at the end of the year, this lens seriously need some update from Fuji
Yes sounds like an interesting lens, for sure 👍👍
On my old X-T2 rain would get into the camera contact and stop the connection. My 18-55mm is very bad for any landscape photos, mushy grass or trees.
Please help. My fuji xt3 with this lens captures lots of grains even at 2000 ISO with plenty of light. It's 2 months old.
What Camera did you take this video with?
So how do the Fuji XF f2 primes compare to the 18-55 f2.8-4, or the other faster XF primes and Viltrox primes?
One for another video 👍
Hi. May I know what focus mode you are using in Landscape photos? Single, Zone or Wide Tracking?
Manual focus for most landscape shots 👍👍
how does it compare to prime lens
My experience exactly with this lens.
Its great up to 50 mil. But the F11 was a supprise i need to check on my own copy. Normally i found 5.6 very sharp.
Edit, I actually sold my 23mm prime due to that i could really not see any difference, i shoot outside mostly landscape.
Thanks buddy, might be different on your copy though 👍👍
Lovely comparison and review. I have never tried my 18-55 at f11 either. After seeing your results I must give it a go. The sharpness across my lens seems very similar to your findings except mine is perhaps a bit better at 18mm in the corners, at least compared to my 10-24 example. When comparing my 10-24 and 18-55 I have noticed however the 10-24 has better contrast punch. The images just pop more. I have always wanted to try the 16-55 but its price and size have discouraged me. I have heard some say the 18-55 is actually sharper at the wide end but the 16-55 is better at the wider end especially in the corners. Thanks for the detailed video.
Thanks Paul 👍
Hi Paul, in my view the 16-55 is way sharper all over the range. Better contrast, too. Plus, it goes wider (obviously) and you can get better background separation since you can shoot at 2.8 at every focal length. It’s big, but the handling is actually more comfortable than I expected (on an XT2 or XH1, anyhow). The 18-55 is nice, but it has been gathering dust since I bought the 16-55...
I agree with all the points that you have made but the fact is in some countries the 18-55 bundle with a fuji XT line camera costs about 50 percent more than the body only one and for that you can buy 2 good primes and some accessories, which kinda defeats the whole value for money proposition.
you could pick one up used for next to nothing though 👍
@@ian_worth Yes that I do agree!
