  • Today I give my opinions on the Fujifilm 18-55mm f2.8-4 lens for photography and videography. After 3 years of professional use, I thought it was high time I did a lens review for this wonderful little fuji standard zoom lens.

    I checked all my Fuji lenses about 3 weeks ago ,after I noticed some very out of focus areas at the edges of my 18-55 lens at 18mm. I taped a £10 note to a wall and used a tripod , taking different images at each marked focal length , with OIS on and off. I expected the sharpest image to be around f5.6. , but to my surprise it was definitely at f11. I also did notice that the OIS was affecting the edge sharpness,even hand held at 18mm , so it is currently switched off. I made a small table of sweet spot apertures , I now keep in the bag, it’s a matrix for the 18-55,10-24 & 55-200 at each focal length. Your video has given me the confirmation that the results for my gear seem fairly comparable. Many thanks Ian.

    • @iliv
      @iliv Před 2 lety

      I noticed the same with my XF 18-55mm lens. At 55mm f/4 the blur on the right edge of the image is most noticeable. At 55 mm f/11 the lens seems to be at it best producing a noticeably sharper result that I would describe as good/acceptable. Regarding OIS, does the body that you use has IBIS? Any chance you uploaded your handy matrix anywhere for public use?

    I have been shooting at f 11 for a couple of years now(travel, landscape, etc) and I really love the outcome from this lens. Like you, I had it in pouring rain, snow, etc and it didn't stop working. The only reason why I would upgrade to the 16 55 os the constant f2.8 because I shoot a lot of sport lately. Other than that coupled with any fuji body it will produce some amazing images!

    Another great video. Love my 18-55. Had it for years now (since 2015). I planned to switch it out for the 16-55 in 2018. But soon as the 16-55 arrived i got buyers remorse. The 16-55 was also too heavy, unbalanced my X-E2s. Plus i'm a lousy photographer and couldn't justify it anyway. Thank the lord the retailer took it back and i never sold the 18-55....phew!

    Just ordered the xt4 with the 18-55. I initially went for the 16-55 but when I discovered that there isn’t ois in the lens I changed the order. I would be using the fuji mainly for video and use fullframe for pro photo but how I see this I could potentially bring the fuji with me on assignment and do some proper photography as well. Nice testing and thanks for the effort.

    This lens has been my closest confidant for 3 years now and have alot to thank it for - it allowed me to experiment and try new things. But yh, just kinda ended up growing out of it once i started discovering my style. And this goes for any kit lens really - they're too general, capable of just about anything in small doses. So for beginners, kit lenses are amazing, and this one in particular is a beast.

    I've had my 18-55mm for a week now. I was getting frustrated with soft and inconsistent pictures. It LOOKS like the issue is that I needed to change my IS (image stabilisation) setting in my X-T30 menu from Continuous to Shooting Only. I'd read a couple of posts online where people had tried that, compared pictures, and found it better. Something to do with continuous creating a build-up of vibration that doesn't matter when filming so much but hurts still pictures. I've only tried the difference today and THINK I can spot a benefit. My pictures are really clear today, perhaps helped by the bright weather outside ... or by this potential fix. Will see.

    • @mikefoster6018
      @mikefoster6018 Před rokem

      @@FajriSiddiq After about three months with the 18-55mm I basically gave up on it. It packs a lot of power in a small package, but it was still proving unreliable in two ways. First, it often produced slightly soft images and I couldn't work out why. Second, the variable aperture became a pain and I got a bit fed up of the routine of having to bring my aperture back to f2.8 whenever I zoomed out, as well as not having any aperture markings on the lens and the aperture ring going clockwise or anticlockwise infinitely (taking away the tactile ability to use my hand to tell when I'm at either end). So I bit the bullet and upgraded to the bigger 16-55mm combined with an X-T4 for the IBIS. It's a heavier combination but great and everything flows much better, with consistently sharp results. The only main downside of my new combination, I'd say, is that if I still want my f1.2 prime in my bag too it all starts to get a little heavy for walking around all afternoon - but still ok. It's also much more conspicuous, size-wise, but I'm quite liking having that 'beefy camera vibe' on the streets :)

      There is a recent update for this lens, saying it would improve the imaging resolution, something to do with the mechanical and electronic shutter. Amazing considering that they still release new firmware for this 10 years old lens

    Nice review Ian. I was planning to buy the S10 bundled with the 18-55, but have decided to pick the E4 instead (like the form factor better and the S10 is way overpriced here). However, since the E4 only comes with the 27mm lens, I'll have to buy this separately. How crucial is IS for simple CZcams-like videos shot indoors? Asking because I plan to buy the 18-55 or the Tokina 23mm1.4.

So I stopped using it and use my 10-24 more. Then I bought the 16-55 and again not had those issues. I will try again woth the 18-55 as I know Lightroom has changed as well as my processing technique but I guess the bokeh will be just the same. This is such a shame for me as I do love to shoot wide at natural subjects in and around my landscapes.

      I’ve found 18-55's bokeh is pretty gnarly too - the highlights a weird ⨀ look to them. It’s a property of the lens, it seems, not the way the images are processed - it does the same thing in Capture One and in Fuji’s JPEGs.

  • @garethmcfarland7244
    @garethmcfarland7244 Před 3 lety +11

    As ‘kit’ lenses go this one is very good, possibly the best I’ve ever used. As an outright lens it’s good but not excellent, although it does represent great value for money. I ended up selling mine and getting the 16-80mm which I don’t regret at all. I was content with the trade off of aperture at the wider end for a significantly wider focal range and the quality (of my 16-80 anyway) is superb - it holds its own against my 35mm f2. With the price differences it is difficult to recommend one over the other. Personally I’d rather have the 16-80 however the (at time of writing) approx £200 difference (used) is significant and some may prefer to buy the cheaper 18-55 and add a fast prime.

    I have had this lens since summer of 2013 - so almost 8 years. With the firmware updates it focuses faster than new and everything is smooth. Yes, you can push the zoom accidentally while touching the front element, but that was the case from day 1, actually. In my opinion, the lens is a little too soft in the corners especially at 18 or 55 and lots of diffraction if you stop down past f8. I would say it's usably a 20 - 50 mm if you care about sharpness in the corners.

    I think it's a great lens to pick up as a beginning photographer or if you're switching systems. The price it goes for when included as a kit lens is great. I never liked mine however and that was mostly due to the focal length, I found 18 to always be a hair too tight and 55 to be not long enough. I would not pick this lens up at full price as there are other better options for similar money.

On the comparison with the Viltrox 23mm, I guess in a real-world walkabout scenario, the OIS on the 18-55 would allow it to outperform the Viltrox on sharpness, by minimising any softness due to camera shake.

    Excellent video as always Ian. Just one question, and that relates to the weather resistance or otherwise of lenses. I recently tried to trade in an older Sigma lens and it was rejected due to fungus in the lens. I was surprised at this as I have never got any of my lenses wet, however it seems a fairly common problem. Just wondered if you have had any issues bearing in mind you take them out in some fairly wild weather, and they do get wet? I also read that silica gel packets help - I may need to start using these.

I certainly have noticed it and the exposures with the IS on were noticably blury. So I, for one, can from my own experience testify that it´s beneficial to turn IS off for long exposures on tripod :)

      Agreed. I’ve also found that IBIS makes even more of a difference. I shoot night-skies and, having inadvertently left IBIS on, the stars looked like I’d literally kicked the tripod!

    Something else that can help with sharpness when using a tripod, apart from turning OIS off, is using the electronic shutter, since it completely eliminates the vibration from the mechanical shutter. It’s not much of an issue at shorter focal lengths, but for longer ones (70mm and up) it can make a significant difference.

    Tom Photo made a video about this lens, in which he confirms as well that the lens is sharpest at f11 throughout the entire focal range. So if you have this lens and want the sharpest picture possible without out of focus background effects, pick f11 (assuming there is sufficient light available).

    If this lens is purchased with the camera at the discounted price it is a no brained. I love mine and I use it regularly. Pretty much I will use it unless I need more shallow DOF or I need to go wider than 18. I have never had an issue with the image quality even though I have not tested it thoroughly. I try not to pixel peep my images too much. As long as the quality is good enough other things play a bigger role in capturing the best possible photo. Probably if I were shooting events I would get the 16-55 but that sucker is heavy and big. I was surprised to see such a color shift in the Viltrox lenses I have been considering getting the 33 but that color shift is ugly. Thanks for the video.

    The original Plastic Lens Hood is PITA. A much better substitute is the newer Haoge LH-X13 or LH-X13B variants (latter one being round, instead of square) metal built with cap. I like my XF 18-55, it's glued basically on my X-T1.
    /edit install always the latest FW, which is v3.23 for that Lens since 2020. I use this Lens since my X-E1, than turned it over to my T1. Because the X-E Series is better with small, fast prime lenses.

    Lovely comparison and review. I have never tried my 18-55 at f11 either. After seeing your results I must give it a go. The sharpness across my lens seems very similar to your findings except mine is perhaps a bit better at 18mm in the corners, at least compared to my 10-24 example. When comparing my 10-24 and 18-55 I have noticed however the 10-24 has better contrast punch. The images just pop more. I have always wanted to try the 16-55 but its price and size have discouraged me. I have heard some say the 18-55 is actually sharper at the wide end but the 16-55 is better at the wider end especially in the corners. Thanks for the detailed video.

      Hi Paul, in my view the 16-55 is way sharper all over the range. Better contrast, too. Plus, it goes wider (obviously) and you can get better background separation since you can shoot at 2.8 at every focal length. It’s big, but the handling is actually more comfortable than I expected (on an XT2 or XH1, anyhow). The 18-55 is nice, but it has been gathering dust since I bought the 16-55...

  • @adityaghosal1000

    I agree with all the points that you have made but the fact is in some countries the 18-55 bundle with a fuji XT line camera costs about 50 percent more than the body only one and for that you can buy 2 good primes and some accessories, which kinda defeats the whole value for money proposition.
