  • Hello oboists and oboe fans! In this week's video I am taking on the most sacrilegious project: learning to play The Flight of the Bumblebee on the oboe! One of the most famous pieces of classical music, The Flight of the Bumblebee is instantly recognizable due to its ability to evoke an insect which swoops and hovers in mid-air.
I spent about 3 hours practicing it for you in this video - something that I honestly never expected myself to do. It turned out not horribly so stick it out to the end. I do provide some pretty decent tips on how to practice fast passages throughout... not just "if you can play it slow, you can play it fast." ;)

Loved that! The oboe is the perfect sound for a bumble bee. You were perfectly fast at the end. Good tutorial.

So much fun! I’d love to see fun video of doing a circular breathing piece. I would also like to see a more serious/tutorial video about oboe adjustments. I think there’s enough young oboists who have been like “oh a loose screw, let me tighten all of them!”

Thank you! Great ideas, I'll put them in the pipeline for sure!! And I've been there with students' parents that take it upon themselves to screw in all the screws 🤦🏼‍♂️

That is so much cleaner in just 2 days than basically any of those "high schoolers" do when they play it... So much better than just "faking" it even if it isn't perfect. I love your tone!

I loved it!!! you are fantastic!!! I'm just sorry that you don't like the song. It is hard to play at the right speed no matter the instrument.....yes....it's just basically scales but your fingers don't always follow what your head tells you to do....I also love seeing any woodwind playing this.....watching your fingers (which we couldn't see) is amazing to me!!!

This video was not scripted 😅🤣🤣

Good job! Makes me want to review that on my flute. I just started playing oboe and my embouchure wants to collapse after 10 minutes. Can you post a video of oboe embouchure exercises? Maybe with a straw so you don’t mess up the reed? After my first 6 days of playing oboe I was finally able to produce the tah sound.
