These Wagner tactics are exactly the same tactics we finns encountered during the winter war in 1939-1940 against the USSR. Every soldier was given a ration of vodka before they started their attack into finnish lines and positions. Their losses were so huge, wave after wave, that the reserved vodka rations for the fallen soldiers were consumed by an ever diminishing number of survivors which led to so called "zombie attacks" by the soviets. History clearly repeats itself.

When Vietnam went to war with the Chinese, Vietnam had one of the largest war hardened and experienced armys in the world and many of their soldiers mentioned how the Chinese sent wave upon wave of their soldiers at the Vietnamese. In the nonfiction book "One Crowded Hour" which was told by an implaced war photographer that stacks of fallen Chinese got so high they fighting took place among these mounds. The Vietnamese as war hardened as they were from years of batting the French and Americans were shocked at this new style of warfare. Its worth a read.

There is fifteen minutes of gunfire then silence. The voice calls out again "one Ukrainian can defeat one thousand Russians". The Russian commander is mad so he sends one thousand men over the hill. This joke originated from the Winter War(November 1939-March 1940). The Finns had 25,000 KIA and Soviet/Russian KIA was estimated at 125,000-250,000. It was actually Khrushchev himself who gave the higher figure when he came to power. It led one Soviet General to remark with dark humour and black sarcasm "We have conquered enough territory to bury our dead". There was also Swedish volunteers helping the Finns. They used "aggressive defence" tactics with mobile guerilla units on ski's combined with local advances and offensives. The Finns in that war faced the biggest artillery barrages since those on the Western Front in WW1. There is parallels between the Winter War and the War in Ukraine.

What isn't being discussed is one of the reasons for the wave attacks. That it's not all out of stupidity (though don't be fooled, a lot of stupid decisions are also being made). They are using the prisoners and others as cannon fodder. To soak up all the bullets and artillery. The more highly trained Wagner units are usually in reserve (though not always). With each wave, they are trying to map out Ukrainian positions and exhaust them before hitting them with artillery to try and make holes. Then the more "elite" wagner try to exploit those holes, usually at night. Of course, sometimes it is just stupid wave attacks, too.
But either way, that's why it's imperative that we support the Ukrainians with material. Not just more ammunition but also with things like night vision and thermals.

I could see the use of some troops as cannon fodder, but not in this capacity. Like everything Russia does, it seems nearsighted and an antiquated approach towards war. When the new western tanks and light infantry vehicles arrive on the scene, I believe these tactics will become even less effective, if that's even possible.

Could the numbers be inflated -- maybe, but there are videos out there of Wagner wave attacks with clearly dozens of Wagner soldiers getting hit by artillery, mortars, grenades dropped from drones, machine guns, or just infantry gun fire. There are many videos out from the past 2 weeks that clearly show large Russian casualties.
What is not clear to me is how many casualties the Ukrainians are taking every day. They may not be as high as Russia's casualties, but they're also high. I think most of the Ukrainian casualties are from Russian artillery that bombs entire areas of Ukrainian defenses once Wagner kamikaze waves help the Russians spot Ukrainian defense positions.

@@tomlewis7898Natural and man made amphetamines were considered to be just a more potent caffeine-type drug. But the western allied nations ended the use when they saw the negative consequences. And issued caffeine to troops instead when needed. While the Germans, including Hitler, clearly overused it and even came to mix it with other drugs when the war turned and the frustration needed “calming”.
After the war, the USSR rather turned to doping drugs for troops (and athletes). Perhaps Russia is still using it to boost troops, since they officially sponsored it’s use among athletes, banning Russians from participating in international games in some sports.
In the west the use amphetamines were banned. However research has continued, since it can have a medical use. Ritalin is used for persons with attention disorders. And actually, there has been some research that indicates that certain inmates who are given medical ritalin under controlled forms (plus adequate support otherwise) end their criminal careers to a larger extent. Likely because they suffer from attention disorders.
Ritalin is also used by the US air-force. To my understanding the only air-force (that admits to) using it. Personally I don’t think it’s a good idea, because it can induce an aggressive behavior in most people (who are not suffering from attention disorders). And while aggression may be considered a good thing for a warrior, it takes it toll on the patience a modern day soldier must also have. Only for those who “fight” like the undead Wagner zombies would amphetamines be a suitable option.
Sure… I would certainly understand why a B2 crew that has to fly all the way from the Mid West to the Middle East and then back again would think a low dose of ritalin would help. But we have caffeine. And must like a place to sleep wasn’t considered by the designers-and the pilots had to construct their own solution-I’m sure that if the designers also forgot to provide a coffee brewer, it could also be both afforded and installed without the aircraft loosing its stealth capabilities.
