- Ever wonder what three Flugelhorns can sound like on the same song without having to switch between different videos? In this video I demonstrate three Flugelhorns by:
1. CarolBrass model CFL-9990-RSS (Red Brass Bell)
Finish: Satin/Polished SilverPlate w/clear Lacquer MSRP $2,800. (US)
2. Van Laar model Oiram Fresu (Gold Brass Bell) MSRP $4,600. (US)
Finish: Palladium w/ Raw Brass Bell
3. Andy Taylor model Standard (Red Brass Bell) MSRP $5,975. (US)
Finish: Satin/Polished SilverPlate w/clear Lacquer
They were recorded in my studio with an AKG C100S microphone through an Apogee One interface directly into Logic Pro X, Each track has the same settings for EQ (flat), Compression, Reverb (Lexicon Large Plate) and volume. In addition, for an accurate comparison the same mouthpiece (Dennis Wick 4FL) was used on each horn. If you close your eyes you'll find that each horn is close in tone. Enjoy and thanks for listening!
The track is "Children of Sanchez" by Chuck Mangione

Hands down the Van Laar !!! Depth, Dark and perfect intonation
You are correct, no competition. I would like to hear an Inderbinen Wood thrown in there though.
Inderbinin flugelhorns are definitely some of the best out there. Roy Hargrove made magic happen when he played one.
Wow...brilliant (er warm!) playing...and great side-by-side-by-side comparison! Thank you so much! Van Laar sounds the warmest!
Carolbrass has a sound directly between the fluffiness of the Van Laar and the punchy, brightness of the Andy Taylor. I'm still all for the Van Laar, though. Fluffy is my fav.
Same thoughts Krey.
I like the Van Larr flugel, and the Andy Taylor shirt and hat.
Thank you Maestro... great video displaying in sound the actual difference. I LOVE THE VAN LAAR HORN👌🏻
Thanks Paul!
To me you sound the best on the Van Laar!
Being as there is so little difference and that the sound will be different dependent on the player, the Carol wins it!
Great way of showcasing what a great preview. Love the Carol brass!
Thanks John! Glad you enjoyed the preview.
Children of Sanchez!
And I can’t decide, they are all wonderful...
Van Laar's deep tone is what you expect of a flugel. The others are more brilliant. But they are all wonderful!
In person your critique is even more apparent. It's not as obvious in a recording scenario. Van Laar has a fuller sound.
Excellent stuff! If i didn't watch, I wouldn't know you were switching. If i listen very carefully, maybe I hear a Little more brightness from the Taylor. Thanks for all the great vids
Great job Bill! As I listened to the three flugelhorns in this demo, I could not make a definitive distinction between them. Perhaps the Denis Wick 4fl mouthpiece has something to do with that full sound. However, I think the heart and soul of the player determine the sound! Again...great job of this demo!
Thanks! It's funny. I myself don't really hear much of a difference but comments I've read are proving otherwise. Perhaps I'm so
old now that my hearing has been compromised. Lol
1 Taylor. 2 Van Laar. 3 Caro But every player has it's own sound and don't forget the mouthpiece. Also the acoustics have influence. Finaly: what does one wanna hear?
Good points.
Wow...they sound exactly the same!
That's cuz he was wearing the same pants!
🤣
@@o.b.v.i.u.s I was hoping nobody noticed my secret... That your pants affect the tone of your horn.
@@BillColletti i have a keen eye, ur... i mean _ear_ for those kinds of things...
良く聴いて下さい。それぞれの音色の違いは明らかです。わからなければ何回でも繰り返し聴いて下さい。必ずあなたにも違いがわかるはずです。
It's all in your mind. Dare to a blind test ;)
Van laar 最高です。
Wow! Great video...love the comparisons. Pretty cool way to display the differences between the three horns. All have a very rich sound, I'm a CarolBrass owner and love that Flugal, but was impressed by the Van Laar. Love that backing track, but unable to find it at the site you listed, is it your own compilation?
Hi Russ, the track is available at the following link:

great demo, Bill..CarolBrass for sure IMO!
個人の好みによると思いますが、自分は真ん中の楽器の音色を選びます。1番幻想的な音に感じます。
Bill, all three sound really nice and close in tone. The Carolbrass would be the better buy based on price. I had a Carolbrass flugel with a gold brass bell a few years ago and I like the tone of your Carolbrass with the red brass bell better. It definitely has a darker tone.
The Dennis Wick 4FL mouthpiece warms it up even more. The CB is 1/2 the price so yes it's definitely the better buy.
¡Ese es el sonido¡ ¡¡MAGNÍFICO!!!
Andy taylor
Carol Brass fantástico
For me all flugels are equal
I personally think the taylor sound a bit sweeter, like it's a smaller bore size perhaps. This is what i prefer. I am currently looking for a flugel. A used taylor phatboy or a new van laar flugel. WHat would you recommend William?
If you are deciding just between the PhatBoy and the Van Laar I would go for the Van Laar. It has a nicer tone in my opinion. The PhatBoy is brighter. For the money a new CarolBrss Flugel is a great alternative. It's 1/3 the price of the other two and it has Stainless Steel valves! They are super smooth. Check out my Carolbrass horns I have in stock and ready to ship here ---> reverb.com/shop/billy-willy-flugel-boy Thanks! Bill
Only thing you can’t tell is the feel… otherwise effectively the same…. All outstanding
You are correct. They feel different from each other.
The sound you make on each almost identical. What about tuning, ease of blowing, intonation, response when playing loud?
The sounds are pretty close when you listen as presented in the video. When you listen or play them in person you can detect more of the tone differences. In my opinion the Van Laar has the nicest tone with the Taylor a close second because it's a bit muffled. The CarolBrass is the brightest. They all have minor intonation quirks but easily managed through playing once you play them enough. CarolBrass hands down has the best intonation, Van Laar second, Taylor third. I think the response when playing loud is best handled In this order... Van Laar, CarolBrass, Taylor. The overall winner is the Van Laar and should be at $4700! CarolBrass is the best bang for the buck at almost 1/2 the price of the Van Laar. Taylor is pricey too and has the most Flugely sound of the bunch.
@@BillColletti thanks for your fulsome reply. If I had the money I'd get a Van Laar, but good to hear that Carol Brass have made a very decent flugel.
💯👌
More deep sound taylor a little bit
I prefer TAYLOR have a magic sound
Great sounding horns...where are they manufactured?
Van Laar - Netherlands, Taylor - UK, CarolBrass - Taiwan
they all sound the same to me...i take that back...the van laar has a little less shimmer to it
Hi Andres, In person the subtle differences are more apparent. It's not as obvious listening back from a recording. Van Laar has a fuller sound.
Too close to call. Winner: Taylor Runner ups: Van Laar, Carol Brass
Hello Bill, I have a question, I have the same equipment 9990 flugel and the same mouthpiece (Dennis Wick 4FL) . When I try to hit C3 the flugel doesn't slot this good, it is very hard to get it out. Do you have this same problem? D3 then is not a problem at all, so it is not my embouchure. Tx for your reply. Regards SR
Hi Veronica, have you tried other mouthpieces? If so, are you experiencing the same results? I've had this same experience on other horns and corrected it by changing the mouthpiece.
@@BillColletti Hi Bill, yes I tried. Instead of the DW 4FL I bought as extra a 5BFL, it is better! Tx for the suggestion.
Van Laar
Van laar sings!
Love it. Which one feels easiest to play in tune?
The intonation is pretty much the same on each horn. No real challenges. I don't even use the 3rd trigger.
The Van Laar has a little something extra.
I agree.
Hub Van Laar me plait mieux
All sound the same to me.
If you told me you played all parts on the same horn, I would've believed it. I guess I could give you a watering can to play on, you'd still sound the same.
A watering can... Hmm, I should give that a test! Thanks for the kind words Raku
Oh Come On! They all three sound the same.
You can hear the differences more so in person.
