  • Please join us as we explore this old pioneer homestead deep in the mountains of West Virginia. We were able to drive up the mountain and down into the awesome abandoned valley and abandoned settlement. This stone chimney and rotted remains of a home was a most exciting find and the metal detectors were quick to fire up. What did we find? Well now, let's watch. And don't forget to like and subscribe :)

My girlfriend bought me a no name metal detector for my birthday and I finally got to use it. I found a couple toy cars, eight spark plugs (in one hole, lol), and some old batteries. Then the thunder and lightning came and I didn't think it was a good idea to be waving a metal rod around. Had fun though. 👍👍✌✌

Hey Chigg, love your videos! They're like a much-needed field trip for all of us. Hey, just one thing about WVA--i realize you always have permission to be where you are, but you still need to be careful. My grandmother lived up in the mountains outside of Beckley. Her only source of water was a spring and rain barrels. She didn't even have a pump; just large buckets. She at least had electricity, but otherwise it was like going back to the 1800s when I visited her. So when I got a car in college, in 1973, I told her now I could come visit her from the DC area where I grew up. I'll never forget her very seriously telling me that I needed to give her notice when I was coming because otherwise she'd have a shotgun pointed out the window at whoever was driving in. It wouldn't surprise me that there are still people like that up there. She lived on a road paved with only chunks of red dog gravel the size of bricks, and you'd think your car was never going to be the same after a few miles of that. Your other video where you mentioned moonshiners and "revenooers" reminded me of my grandfather. Lots of stories there!
So anyway, be careful out there, and wear some gloves!

When my great grandpa died it took a week on horse back for a rider to get to his brother to tell him about his brothers passing in West Virginia. That's how far into the woods my family lived! Wow! That was in the 1950's!

That was a proper old house not just a cabin. It had an upstairs & plaster on the walls but all built the in the old ways. I feel a lot of respect for these people, going out away from the towns, more or less on their own in some places, doing every thing by hand & by the sweat of their brow, living on the edge of starvation sometimes. Thankyou for showing us that. It was thought provoking.

I have been watching quite a few different treasure hunting channels for sometime now , I really enjoy sharing that unique excitement of the element of surprise with the person operating their metal detector. A couple weeks ago I ran into your channel and within a few minutes of watching you made me feel as if I was right there with you digging up treasures from the past ! Wwwwell ..... I decided you were having too much fun and I wanted in on it , So I got online and bought me a Garrett ace 400 metal detector and pinpointed, so far I have found over 30 coins 2 little toy cars and a lot of trash of course . I know i’m just a baby beginner and I know it will take me a little time to get the hang this contraption so I don’t have to mess with the trash as much, The more I use it, the more I learn, the better it gets ! Thanks for being an inspiration to my new hobby !....I’ll be watching you on my iPad !...Happy hunting !......... and thanks again !..........

I really admire the people who lived in those times and places... they had to be self sufficient! The ongoing situation wouldn’t have phased them a bit! They grew their own food, spun their own wool, wove their own cloth and sewed their own clothes... the men created/repaired their own tools, took care of their own animals, provided food and security for their families. Being that far out they were also responsible for the education/training for their children...

@Guf Redd >>> Thanks I actually have some old Charles Meaken pieces here. I found em in the old cabinets when I bought my place it had been abandoned since the 1960's. Stuff was still here on old news papers in the cupboard. Kinda shocking it was still here as well old vases and wash basin bowls too. Rumor has it hunters also used to stay nights during the winters because the place back in the 70's still had windows and a wood stove. When I got this place it was pretty much a wreck with wild animals living inside... I have the plates on an old hutch top in my office with my racing trophies... The plates always make me wonder who ate off em and what kinda ppl they were that lived here.

Those were the videos that brought in views and subscribers the most, I would guess. Lots of reasons there. First would be the catchphrase "hold your breath!" which most people and kids would enjoy. 2 the sound of flowing water and the viewer that could look for river treasure along with Chigg and last I would say the channel has turned more towards adults than the younger generation that enjoyed videos like that. It's not that engaging for people to watch these videos.

Loving the vids, Chigg! You should come to McKeesport, PA sometime. George Washington (before he was POTUS or even a general) moved through this area with Gen. Braddock during the French and Indian War. The army camped nearby and crossed the Mon River on the way to attack the French at Fort Duquesne (now Pittsburgh). The river crossing is in walking distance of my house. There was also a lot of Seneca activity from Queen Alliquippa's tribe (who allied with Braddock and Washington). Washington apparently returned here to pay respects to Aliquippa on her death bed, and she is buried nearby as well. On top of that, there's some caves and old ruins of home sites! Could be a cool adventure!
Edit: oh and forgot to mention I found a well from the 1900's in my back yard I've been starting to dig out. Nothing older than you, yet, but never know ;)

Never seen you find like an old grave. As much as you jump around by old house piles, seems like you would find one

You have 3 audiences Chigg. Those interested in detecting, caving and river hunting - and a mix of the three. Last year wasn't so good for river trips and there wasn't much caving going on. Some people probably dropped out for those reasons.

I think there is a group of people that find the nature stuff entertaining, as well. And lastly, I'm sure there's a group that find the Chigg really hot!😚

I thought this was one of the better videos you’ve made recently. Loved the relics you found and the time you took to tell us a little about how you were using your detector in that area. Stay safe out there. Will check out Todd’s channel

Awesome place to detect. I surely think you guys should go back. After finding the suspender clips, plates and stuff, I think you should dig more there. "Todd said the house is to the right after crossing the creek." Todd is smarter than the average bear. LOL From Yogi the Bear and BooBoo. Tell Todd to put more videos up on his channel. I know he has to have them.
