I don't mind you cutting the pressure washing out, but I wish you'd leave in the inevitable moment when the fins on the engine redirect the washer jet right back up your left nostril.
LOL

“If you cant get to this point - you shouldn’t be doing to job’ - so very true 👍
I know you do this for a living and probably believe either you know what to do or you don't. But there's many in between there that knows enough to be dangerous but not enough to be good. So the little tips you come with to check if everything is working properly like putting air in the system to see if it comes through to the intake, I would never known to check that - but now I do! Thanks man. Every little bit of stuff like that you should put into the video. I know they get longer, mor filming and stuff for you but man does it hit home when I watch it.
Just put a 40 horse big block kohler on a small vermeer stump grinder, the damn thing wants to eat a whole ass tree now🤣
I have been running a Walker for 20 years. Have replaced every part more than once... Paid $650 for it. I made a ton of videos on them. Great Vid
Rich!! I'm in the middle of doing an engine swap on my FR-S. While you haven't shown this exact procedure, I just want to thank you for the incredible wealth of mechanical knowledge you have made available to all of us! I seriously would not have been able to pull this off without the tips you've taught me. You're truly the father I never had lol Stay filthy brother, signed a Welland local. Peace.
You'll get it done man!
How'd the swap go? Get'r done yet?
These videos have kept me motivated threw out my depression to go to work everyday thank you.
"if you can't get this far, you shouldn't probably be doing it" sums it up well.
I think I like this guy. Steps you need and not a lot of other useless stuff. Good humor also. Thank you.
Bad Gary!
Not to call you out but v-twin kholers usually leak oil from the breather there not because they are clogged but because there is high pressure oil in that little channel under the plate that goes to the oil pressure switch and that plate you re used gets bent and looses seal on the gasket and cross bleeds into the breather side. 20 bucks says it will leak again within a few hours of run time. That's why the gasket comes with the plate.
Thanks for the info!
We replaced every kohler on our farm with honda v twins. Been 3 years and zero issues
@@jeremymoreside1444 Those honda twins are damn sturdy
i was heading the the comments to say the same thing. you just said it better than i would have :)
yeah there was a service bulletin on that issue
The parks department I work for has 5 of these walker mowers with the Kubota diesel engines all have at least 1000 hours on them. They are pretty bombproof other than the occasional bad sensor/switch or them running into things thanks to the college students who run them.
Hey some of us college kids know what we're doing. On the other hand a coworker almost put regular gas in a leaf blower so...
@@Maverick423 that wont hurt it. Theres usually enough residue to run a tank or 2
Gary`s dad works in management.
I think Gary's family tree is bigger than Genghis Khan's... They get around.
This thing w Gary is the best trend on this channel, ever. Have been watching ever since he had 10K subs.
Those Walker's are awesome! The city uses them for their softball fields, so I wanted one too, but no way is this affordable.
So far as your parts mixup is concerned: people are self-centered and mostly don't think about the boring things at work. The adage "love what you do and you won't work a day in your life" is true, as is the inverse "hate what you do and you're work will be a constant misery". "Just get it done" is sometimes the undoing of a business. After I retired from never working a day, I took contracts with several companies that needed help, and that's where I saw this in action.
Your vijayos are the only ones i like for time laps and there music and music in general! No loud heavy beats stuff! Its brilliant!
Another awesome video Rich keeping it real not editing out do overs and so close bracket locations awesome tips a camera at the start of the job is your friend
I love your videos and your sense of humour. Makes me laugh everytime. Keep you the good work man 👍👍👍👍👍
Done this job a few times. Still watch for that little different approach as do most mechanics that watch videos on the tube 👍
12:48 I love the jam music sections when he’s putting the mower engine back together freakin slaps!
Recently gave away my diesel and gas walker. Absolutely loved them and hated to have to give em away and eager to get another set. Laughed when i saw you out the deck back in as it was never my favorite part.
One of the best mower and engine combos
Always enjoy our videos. Loved the music!
Hey man when I saw one of your videos criticizing the 6.5 truck I've never thought you had a small engine shop also I saw you doing some roofing so in other words you are a handy man, congrats bro I love your videos,,
We have two Kubota zero turn mowers where I work. Both are 26 horsepower diesel engines. They are by far the toughest mowers. The ZD 326 is at least 12 years old and has had very few issues. The ZD 1211 is 3 years old and has had nothing but regular maintenance. I think we paid about 18 500 for the 1211.
Great music track and sharp editing. Very enjoyable.
That montage song kicked ass! WOW that cuts nice. So satisfying!
found the parts catalog is online so you can only order the parts you need by part number , ( most of the engines use the same parts , except rotating assy )
the bracket that you thought for the fuel line is actually the engine lift point ( left front, right rear ) most of them are missing if the motor has been worked on out of the frame or covers pulled .
another problem I have experienced besides the breather cover is the breather reed valve splitting/ breaking it also causes oil issues as it overloads the breather box with pressure and pops the gaskets . always check it if you have it open takes 2-3 seconds
Ha, Gary... have had the same issues with some parts, with the thing around they keep sending everything but the bit I need, a roll of tape later works just like new.
V twin with an oil leak? Must be a Harley LOL
Lol especially the older ones. Had a pan/shovel that I just could not stop from leaking oil. Good engines though
@@Dirtyol12valve yep! If it ain't leaking it has no oil
One of them "total loss" oiling systems.
I don't know if you guys have NAPA up in the great north, but they actually carry an impressive inventory of Kohler parts all the way back to the old K series motors. In fact, a K series breather element is about 3x that size and you could cut it down pretty easily. Looks like a similar material, but my stuff from 50 years ago never looked that bad.
Great video Rich @DGHD
Really interesting, I was watching to learn more about my Kohler 20 on my truck mount carpet machine, lots of similarities here. These are much more sensitive than the vangaurd engines im use to that just run and run until they blow up
Rich I noticed the hydro fan was broken, plastic fan in the pulley. Thats the only way the hydro cools and they are cheap. There is a left and right you may want to order a couple
😝
Nice repairs rich looks like everything works again
Thanks for the upload Rich and company! Love the industrial stuff. It would be amazing if you and Taryl Fixes All did a collaboration! Deboss Garage and Grass Rats Garage!
Add mustie 1, you got a trifecta!
Works well again rich awesome repair @DGHD
While it was out, you probably should have put rings in it to cure the blow by problem. Kohler rings seem to lose tension, I suspect from heat because they are easily clogged with grass that can't be cleaned out without disassembly. I also enlarged the crankcase ventilation and added a positive crankcase ventilation valve on a couple of Kohler engines. That box on top of the engine doesn't help with cooling either.
I was guna say I hope it wasn't just blowby from wrong rings.. lol. What's the deal with the reed valve under There? Is that also just part of the crankcase ventilation?
I have a carbed 25 hp that I've done the headgaskets on before, it consuming oil. I'm trying to decide if I'm even guna bother fixing it again. I think it might be the rings at this point, havnt even done a comp test yet. I was thinking about rebuilding it or at least just re ringing it maybe.
Nice job Rich!
I had the pleasure of rebuilding one of these on a Husqvarna as my first engine overhaul, great engines but God Damn that breather is a pain to get to and of course mine just started leaking again so it looks like I'm gonna be doing this soon.
When i worked in construction boss had one of these dang shop guys didn't do mantaince on it and it died by its 2 year out in the field that walker did some really good work down here in texas
Hello from Kingston. Love your videos. Mike be looking for a ‘new’ work truck in a couple years...
Those breather covers are notorious for warping and causing a leak. I surface them but most just replace them.
I can’t stand not knowing about that bracket!!! Great episode Rich!
Just rewind and you can see that bracket was put right back where it came from.
Another common cause for this on the Kohler's with the valve cover mounted fuel pump is the fuel pump will leak internally and dilute the oil. This then fls the crankcase and runs right out every seal.
That’s very true but put a pulse pump just below the mechanical one remove the valve cover gut the pump tap a 1/8 pipe fitting and install a 90 run a hose to your new pump and you now have a pump that looks like factory and it’s functional. Keep your hands safe when pushing hard keep your hands open it’s a knuckle saver good luck to you all. With Respect. RR
That steel wool was kinda fine, what works the best without clogging so easily are the stainless steel scrubbing pads. The bigger pads that look just like rolled up chips off of a lathe all bunched together are what I use for 2 stroke muffler packing on old mopeds and breather material for making that oil mist condense and drain back to the sump.
Thanks for doing small engine repairs 👍. My command is leaking like a siv. My magnum also leaked in multiple spots.
Had a Kawasaki twin in a mule had 4k hours on it and never leaked anywhere 🤷🏽♂️
20:05 I thought I was being stalked by a mosquito! 😂🤣😂
Good job man I've been there once or twice
Thinking about Gary: from reading the comments, it seems like including the cover would be a good idea *if it fitted* correctly. Is the wire wool such a standard hack that they actually expect you to do that?
Does this design make for better access than a "standard" ride-on tractor-style mower? It's an ungainly-looking machine but seems to work OK - $20k seems a wee bit steep for a mower though.😁
The mowing over a dead bird made me lmao!🤣
SWEET JOB!
Great video
My father had to have one of these rebuilt on the eXmark mower because he never checked the oil after they had it a few years. Of course, this was years after I had moved out. He did the same on the John Deere they had before. The eXmark is an expensive mower to not do oil service on! I’ll never understand!
That breather plate is very prone to warping, I've had to replace a lot of them because they were leaking.
thank you for your video
Great job and video 👍👍🇨🇱
14:20 is just the engine lift point bracket. However the company that uses that particular engine may or may not remove it to also tie down wires, fuel lines, and so on...
Look like a ch22s, also looks like it has the digital spark coils...... Kohler discontinued those. Took me forever to get that problem figured out, the local lawnmower shop didn't have a clue and he has literally been working on lawnmowers for like 40+ years. He finally got the right person on the phone at kohler and got me the right parts ordered to replace the digital spark coils.
Walkers are very nice! Drove one for 6 years in lawn care. Just don't pull back too hard on the 2 control sticks between your legs while going fast. The mower turns into a bucking bronco. 😅
Atually in the middle of rebuilding 2 ch25s on exmarks. Always had this problem
If you go old enough back to when they were making the Kohler K-series engines K91-K361 & the later Kohler twins & the magnum 18-20 motors, the dipstick just clicks in. If there’s an issue w the breather the dipstick will pop out pretty quickly. It’s just held in w a little rubber seal in a tube, snug enough to not move much.
Nice to know that Steel Wool can be used as a "Safe Alternative" for the PCV Filter!
Brass wool better
Not a fan of the horizontal Kohler command model but the vertical ones are great providing you take care of them but i like Kawasaki the commands were known for headgasket problems and leaking sump gaskets some had ignition issues but they are a decent engine the command single cylinders are great also
I was wondering when you were going to remember the fan had to go back on. LoL
very cool nice work nice kitty .
I get the impression that a 8N tractor with a brush hog would not keep the missis happy at all. Where was the cup holders/LOL. I really think these are easier to work on than the filming of working on them. When you got to the screen that you dug out reminded me of one that must of had a whole brillo pad stuffed in there tight... needle nose is a friend and pressure washer is a real treat if it don't need work too. My wife would borrow the neighbors mower and then a hour later I get to rebuild one... She got the worlds dumbest mole
That looks to be different engine series but I have done head gaskets on a dozen of the v twin Koehler that we’re eating oil and had high crankcase pressure. The gasket fails in the area between cylinder and the adjoining pushrod/oil drain back passage. These are the CV730 engines that are 22-26 HP range vertical shaft.
I know this is an old thread.
The Cam Lobes wore down at 500 hours on my 2002 Kohler Command Pro CV-20 engine, the starter would have to spin and spin the engine for it to finally start, then after approximately 10 more hours of runtime, it took a battery charger on 200 amp boost hooked up to my Scag Tiger Cub's fully charged battery and the starter would have to spin for over a minute before the engine would finally start, once it started I could cut grass with my zero turn mower; but the engine was not performing as it should, It was using oil too, it didn't have the same power and I couldn't turn it off unless it was back on my utility trailer because it would not start without a battery charger hooked up.
I removed and rebuilt the Kohler Command Pro CV-20 engine, installed a new Camshaft, new rings and valves, etc. I installed it back on mower and it ran as new, same power as new, started up instantly every time, didn’t use any oil between changes and run good until the next 500 run hours and SAME thing happened again, yeah, Cam Lobes worn again and using a lot of oil I rebuilt it again with another new Camshaft and I started using Synthetic oil this time. I have 300 hours on this rebuild so far in 03/2022 and it runs great!
I love our two Walkers. Have you had to replace/rebuild your hydrostats yet?
The only thing wrong with using steel wool is that it rusts, and usually quite quickly. It ends up rusting into small pieces that can end up in the sump where the oil pump picks it up. Brass wool is a better choice, because it will never rust - you can get it from marine supply stores. Also if a seal tends to spin in the case, it might be a good idea to use green loctite (seal retainer) to make it stay in place.
I thought about steel wool breaking up so i thought use scotch brite! then it occurred to me scotch brite is an abrasive, if that ends up in the sump, hmm. Brass wool is a great tip.
it will be coated in oil ever after the first run
I agree on brass wool
I would like to give you a little bit of my 40 plus years of experience. (1st) anytime you’re scraping aluminum turn your scraper over it won’t dig in (2nd) I would encourage you to stay away from silicone the main reason is if any gets inside the engine it can and will block your oil flow please try a product called gasket eliminator it a red tube made by loctite p/n 2096064 unlike silicone when it’s oil and water friendly and it will take up a gap to .010 thick and it pressure activated the harder you press the better it holds. If some gets in the oil it becomes oil same with water. I like what you’re doing I’m not trying to change anything you do maybe just a different approach to solving the same issue just in my experience a little better. It’s With Great Respect. RR
Hav you ever tried anaerobic gasket maker on your crank seals? I’ve found that works better than RTV on the seals.
Nice Welker shirt, sir.
Had a similar problem with a brand new snow blower. Stealership had all sorts of useless reasons why it was happening. Not one of their ‘solutions’ involved them actually even looking at the machine. Pulled breather apart and found demister completely missing. Made one from Scotchbrite pad and good to go!
To adjust the governer with the throttle open twist the governer shaft in the same direction as full throttle. While holding the shaft and throttle open tighten the nut. Done
what do you think of the grasshopper mowers. we have one and its the best yet
DEBuss can you please do an everything about a cummins 6-354 perkins for road applications
Whats that bracket for... hoisting engine from the crank😅 good content and good lesson you have a new sub
Cool Video witch Song is when you Speed Up the Video when you
tear down the engine
Remember kids, when you ride with your feet above spinning blades and have no seat belt, flip-flops are always the answer👍. Great video rich, really like how you used John deere to get your Kohler parts, very resourceful.
Ive had the output shaft seal blow out , and just be hanging on the shaft . I was ueing an oil catch bottle instead of a screen breather .
Using a wood chisel for a gasket scraper, that's genius!
Works great on the thick stuff. Then go to razor
Glad to see that you wore your safety sandals on the mower. Always set an example for your younger viewers.
Good job Karen. Always got to point something out that that's not your liking 😉
@@mikehunt8375 You don't see the humor in my comment ? Sorry I have offended you. Oh yeah you misspelled your last name. Starts with a C !
I think I'll stick with my 30 year old scag. Built like a tank, very simple machine, all kinds of grease points. Beautiful running machine, and produces a very smooth, even cut.
Yeah I never liked the walkers, I know other ppl do but I own two toro versions zmaster z350 and z355 very simple compared to the walkers and now just as nice
Mine starts to click tap lifters when hot.
I used Mobil 1 10w40 it went away.
On a Stump grinder.
I have a very similar machine. Its a toro z355 almost a twin
Do you think introducing steel wool particles in to your oil should be of concern?
Is this DeBoss Garage or Mustie1? Lol. Great video anyway.
So how big was this bird Rich? Lol.
Canada goose? Like mowing a turkey!
Need to get them to replace that cooling fan on the hydro.
Does anyone have tips for a kohler clutch, torque converter, or transmission setup?
Thats a funny looking diesel. Lol. When did they start putting sparkplugs in diesels? Is that the new glow plug? Anyway.... Thanks for looking out for the gas rats too. Keep up the good work.👍
Hey Rich, could you please explain the governor again I didn't understand the part about the bird! Lol. I usually have a dead squirrel left behind from the neighborhood cat.
Could you place the videos about heavy equipment on your other channel place on this channel?
Not a bad motor really. The magnets fall off the inside of the flywheel and mash up the stator, if you're really unlucky.
nice flashlight app with the face on the phone 2:41
you can take the motors out with the exhaust btw much easier to take them out
Do you have a video on taking v twin off cud cade!t rider
Nice spot on the if you have renmoval ? Stop lol
I have had blown head gaskets on most of the Kohler engines with blown out seals I have worked on .
Kohlers blow head gaskets all time. Im a kohler tech.
Let’s just say my 79 John Deere garden tractor now leaks oil in 8 different spots
