    The industry will never change. Find a new career. Wrench as a side hustle. I've had former customers stop me in the supermarket asking to fix thier cars. You get to pick and chose your customer.

      I'd have to say, you are probably not wrong on this. I too have chosen this path. I am a college trained Auto & HD Diesel Mechanic. I walked away from it 15+years ago. Now I am a Senior Engineering Lab Technician for a commercial HVAC Manufacturer. Me and a friend (also a former Mechanic) have a little side hustle working on vehicles on the weekends....electrical DIAG is my thing, so I do that and he does the mechanical diag stuff and we both tag team on bigger jobs - engine swaps, transmission swaps etc. We are never short on jobs, we charge a fair price and we take pride in our work. Our customers are all told we only work on vehicles on the weekends and if it's your only vehicle and you need it back asap, you should take it somewhere else. I enjoy it as a side hustle, way more than I ever did as a full time job.

    Agree with other posters who say there is no fixing the industry. The choice for each participant in the industry is whether or not they are going to do what they can to fix their individual part of it. Be the fix you look for.

      @@detailedautodiagnostics so where do we start? How do we make it better? As techs there is only so much we can do. While I agree with the bitching, and I am guilty of doing more than my fair share, we need to come up with answers.

    • @detailedautodiagnostics
      @detailedautodiagnostics Před 6 dny

      @TheMasterHackUS there have been a lot of answers over the years and some really great ideas! The problem is there has been no beneficial follow through....
      Let's take training for one example...... training used to be a place where you go to gain and share knowledge......... training used to be a place where you can learn something that you could use when you returned to your shop... now training has turned into a sales pitch for tools that technicians cannot afford.... it's all bulshit man

    It's a lot easier to change careers, than change an industry that is culturally inclined to screw the rank, and file. Trucks, forklifts, marine, government... They're all paying a living wage, and they're all hiring.

  • @keithk1454

    never going to happen! I'm 59 and never saw any change! wasted thirty years doing this! It has to be regulated by the govt like doctors, lawyers and firemen etc. You won't see a substandard fireman trying to save lives or a doctor without a license practicing medicine or a lawyer that couldn't pass the bar exam! so why are there subhumans working on cars?

    • @matthew5471
      @matthew5471 Před 6 dny

      I don't have much experience with lawyers, but if you think a government stamp on any firefighter or doctor makes them a pro... well you need to meet more firefighters and docs. They're hacking their way through life, imperfectly. Same as you, same as me. The last thing this industry needs is government oversight. Repair bills will go up with a verifiable excuse, tech wages will stay stagnant, and the owners will pocket the difference. Yeah, we should work towards a solution, but more government ain't it, never has been. Every single thing the gov has ever touched, now sucks.

    The industry dug itself a giant hole by giving away too much for free. Free multipoint inspections, free video inspections, free car washes, no charge wiper install. Brake inspection for free after the job was sold. Free A/C inspection. Free code reading. Giving away labor left and right. Policy adjusting work for some one that doesn't come to the dealer ship ever. Warranty times that are impossible. I've seen labor rates going up and up but technician pay hasn't increased. Work conditions aren't the best in most places. Its either very hot or very cold. Do things need to change yes. Will it be over night? No. By leaving your not going to force change new people will just come into the same thing we have been dealing with. Weather the technician shortage gets worse(which I could and most likely will happen) or it improves good techs still need to be around to help promote changes and show others how to improve and carry on making it better. If no one is around to teach then the industry will continue to decline.

    Absolutely 💯 truth Mike. You can’t talk about the good without the bad. The thing is you have to be an adult about it when your toes get stepped on. Whether right or wrong there’s always something to be learned from both aspects. There’s no room for crybabies. All that does is waste time and resources. Lack of management seems to be the biggest problem that I’ve seen. A house without a foundation won’t stand. The toxic circle will continue repeat itself. For some reason the technicians always take the brunt of it and not the owners/management.

  • @cardo1111
    @cardo1111 Před 7 dny +2

    True that. Yelp helps customers voice their opinions but it has to be overhauled from the ground up. There are still some good honest repair shops, however their are many only concerned about maximizing profit and padding the pockets of owners/commissioned staff. I would even say it's gotten worse since Covid, many learned bad habits to survive during the lean times and have kept those bad habits in place.

  • @fatboyshenanigans6862

    From my experience in the industry, I've seen a majority of the problems in the industry that people do talk about, like pay or tool cost warranty times, etc. The quiet problems like accountability. But it was pretty difficult to voice the problems towards my employers due to a risk of losing my job. Now, I finally got a position to do so without the fear of losing my lively hood. On the flip side, talking to some other technicians, it kinda difficult to see a good solution or to get a way for shop owners or employers to see the problems

  • @northsideirish312
    @northsideirish312 Před 7 dny +1

    Speak loudest by walking away quietly, never to return. For example, let everyone learn how important a properly paid fire department is only after their mega fabulous homes are burnt to ash. An truly dire tech shortage seems like the only way to force a twenty five cent pay raise.

  • @TheMasterHackUS
    @TheMasterHackUS Před 7 dny +4

    I have so many comments. But I agree. Nothing is changing. There isn’t a technician shortage, there’s a skilled technician shortage. Plenty of bodies out there. This also feeds the dealer vs Indy argument. I know the dealer is about the bottom line, but I make real good money at a dealer. I’ve seen all the Indy shops around me. All have the same were family, we take care of each other blah blah blah. They don’t pay. Sorry that’s a rant.

    • @theawesomeguy9999
      @theawesomeguy9999 Před 6 dny +2

      Don't be sorry, it's absolutely true. Just left an indy shop that was underpaying me, had no benefits, while simultaneously having the highest expectations out of us possible. From complex diagnosis on late model vehicles to tuning old carbureted muscle cars, to doing low profile tires on 20 year old tire machines that barely worked. They expected you to be an everything tech while paying 1/3 of what I make now at a BMW dealership doing easier work most of the time with MUCH better equipment, and air conditioning. And the crazy part to me is they were shocked and insulted when I rolled my toolbox out, don't know what they expected. They just want us all to bend over and take it while they pocket the real money and go on and on about "family"

    The auto industry has been propping itself up on the backs of mechanics since the Model T rolled off the assembly line, and it won’t change until the last toolbox closes. Say whatever you want out loud, but the culture of seeing us as disposable grease monkeys is too ingrained in the system, and the only thing that’ll change that is if we become more scarce.

    There is no fixing this industry. Requires involvement from to many . There's probably 60 shops in my town most are small 2/3 bay operations also have the mid size shops, the chain stores and then dealers. They are all fighting each other for that $. They don't care about the industry they don't care about retaining technicians. There are lots of fresh immigrants in my area and they will work for 18 an hour.
    The Quiet part is this industry is to easy to get into.
    Buy a few tools keep a phone in pocket so can look up videos on how to diag and repair and your a mechanic.
    Pretty much every other trade Requires training and education and skill. Millwrights can't look up every job youtube. Government doesn't allow a guy who's green , super green to wire a new house but a greenie can change brakes.
    I don't want to get off into to many aspects here.
    Problem 1, there are to many "mechanics" and to many shops.
    Millwrights I know get paid huge and call the shots on the jobs they choose and even time they work.

      Agreed on the too many shops/mechanics. It's really easy to get by in this industry without really knowing what you're doing. Newer, more complex cars will weed some of those folks out but in areas like mine where cars don't rust, there are plenty of 20-30 year old cars that are easy to fix to live off of. There's always someone willing to do it cheaper and more half assed.
