Originally known as Harrison, a real estate developer, George Mortimer West, wanted to capitalize on the interest in the Panama Canal at the time and pushed to have the name changed to Panama City. Additionally, a straight line from Chicago to Panama City, Panama intersected the town; one other item, Panama City at the time was the closest developed port in the US mainland.
