  • Learn how to use Cakewalk by Bandlab, a free DAW. This Cakewalk by Bandlab tutorial for beginners will teach you the basics of the digital audio workstation. I go over the layout including the playlist, piano roll, and mixer, as well as what most things do. I also talk about setting the DAW up so you can record at the right bit depth and sample rate, import your VST plugins, and get your samples and loops in the software too.
    Previously called Sonar, this digital audio workstation was made free when it was acquired by Bandlab. Although a new company owns it, it's still the same DAW (Cakewalk Sonar Platinum), just with some updates. If you want to download Cakewalk for free, check it out here: www.bandlab.com/products/cake...
    ***
    To open something in the multi-dock, select a track and then go to "Views" on the top menu of the DAW. From there you can open the piano roll, console, step-sequencer, etc. You'll have to repeat this process for each track.

    Hey everyone, I thought I'd try talking a bit slower for this one as many people say I go to fast in my videos. 😅 Let me know what you think. Thanks for watching!
    Sorry for not including this but here is how you open tabs on the multidock: Go to the View menu at the top of the DAW and select the tabs you want open there. You will need an instrument track for the MIDI ones.
    P.S. If you want to use your *computer keyboard as a MIDI controller,* you can bring it up by going to Views > Virtual Keyboard > Computer Keyboard. Thanks to @Choco milk

    Hi, I'm guessing that this is a brilliant introduction to Cakewalk, but I completely disagree that it is for beginners. To me, a beginner is someone who is completely unfamiliar with basic techniques, terminology and actions. I've only just now worked out what a 'DAW' is, for example. I'm afraid my eyes glazed over after a minute or two, haven't got a clue what's really going on, so if this is an entry-level tutorial then I now realise that this is not for me and that I'd better look for a dedicated multi-track recording console. I think if you're going to post a video tutorial for 'beginners' then you should assume that a viewer may not understand little, if anything, of the terminology and data-manipulation that is shown, and may not even have the technical knowledge beyond being able to turn a PC on and load up CZcams. As I said, I'm sure that for those with the basic tech knowledge on the subject already that this is an excellent intro to Cakewalk and it's features.

    • @TransverseAudio
      @TransverseAudio  Před 4 lety +226

      Hey, thank you for such a thoughtful comment on this. I understand where you're coming from but my intentions were for people new to Cakewalk, not DAWs entirely. I don't think you should give up on them but instead look up a tutorial about what a DAW is and what it can do. I think that is a great place to start.

      @jeesjees3024 Před 4 lety +109

      Tbh I came here, watched the tutorial and before that I didn't know anything about these terms and I have never had a DAW before. I watched this video and checked up those parts he showed in the video. I learned something new and just by discovering things by myself I learned how to do simple actions with it. So actually you don't need to know anything, you only need some curiosity! So don't give up!

    Great tutorial! For me, this was a good overview of the DAW and its features. Being familiar with other DAWs did help me to follow what was explained. If I were a newbie, I think the speed of the tutorial might have been a bit intimidating, but from the perspective of an intermediate user I think that this was a very intuitive look at the DAW. The layout was explained in about the same order in which I would have asked questions. This quickly helped me to grasp where the various "things" were, such as the mixer rack, track list, and list of plugins. Overall I would give this a 5-star review if that was a thing on CZcams.
    I haven't looked through any of the other videos in the channel yet, but I will definitely be poking through some more! If there isn't one already, I would love a video that focuses specifically on workflow tips, perhaps also broken down by area in the DAW. There were already a few tips in this video which I really liked, and I think an entire video just focusing on various tips and mouse/keyboard shortcuts would be really valuable for more experienced users that really want to establish a more efficient workflow.

    Having grown too tired of the endless bugs in Studio One, I thought... hey lets try this free DAW. It has more learning curve than Studio One, but it is a phenomenally capable and stable DAW. Actually I really am starting to love it. It's also very efficient - Studio One used to regularly run at 90% CPU usage, but Cakewalk is running at 30-40% with the same project and plugins. At least for me - this is going to be my workhorse for the foreseeable future.

      Agreed to an extent. A little time just searching and trying, watching a few tutorial vids and you'll be on your way to start understanding. I mean literally a few hours of time and you'll understand better. The terms and process seems so intricate and complicated. It sounds like a language u dont understand. But its not that complex once u get into it. I taught myself. IT IS...a lifetime learning process. But what i loved...is once i figured out the basics...i could sit in front of any program, search around to find what i need...and work it like i always used it. Cool to hear! It wasn't too long ago since it was called Sonar (early last year). You might be able to fix your problem via the preferences menu. Turn on advanced on the bottom and go to "Sync and Catching" under Audio. On the bottom, there is "record latency adjustment" that you might have to play around with. Other than that you might be able to "remove DC offset during recording" under "Playback and Recording". I've never come up against this so I'm not totally sure if it can be solved on the recording level.

      Hey, you may need to check your audio drivers in the preferences menu and play around with what output you're using.

      @@Castafer Thank you, I like to keep my videos to the point. I'm glad you enjoyed it! T7 is another good one, I think it ranks pretty high in the free DAW space. I would need to use it to get a better opinion on it though. It's unfortunate that it has problems like that though.

      @@Castafer Yeah, EW is a good company for orchestral instruments. Don't forget that Bandlab is a for-profit business and this was most likely released to do just that in some way. Whether direct in the future or indirect via influence or reputation. Don't get me wrong though, it really is great to see this thing made free and is great of them to do!

    its legit, nearly impossible to do this tutorial, just because the audio of my speakers keeps needing me to close cakewalk to even listen to this tutorial on youtube.

    What a great intro video! Yes, he DOES speak quickly (but clearly) however if you miss something, which I did many times, simply hit the left cursor button on your PC keyboard once or more to review. Thank you Transverse Audio. I can't wait to deep dive into Cakewalk again.
