Jamey Johnson was invited by the Hag to come up on stage and sing a song during the Merle Haggard, Kris Kristofferson concert at the Ohio State Fair on July 31, 2012.
Jamey is , with out a doubt, the greatest country singer we have today....end of story. He is what we used to here on the radio any time we tuned into our local country station, thats what makes him so special...he is real
I've always thought Long Black Veil is one of the most beautiful melodies, and poignant lyrics. Jamey certainly does it justice. Heard him sing it at one of his concerts. He really honors the old music. Kee it going Jamey!
I was at this concert & i got chills when Jamey got up on stage with this country music ICON! Jamey is a true traditionalists like Merle & George & i hope he continues to sing those old TRUE COUNTRY songs!!
Who wouldn't be nervous up there with Merle? Jamey, just like the rest of us..grew up listening & loving every word Merle put out on vinyl, cd or whatever..it's called Respect.
We had the great fortune of being there that night. Kris, Merle, and then Jamey. The greatest concert moment of my life and I have been to many. Thank you for a memory I will never forget.
Jamey looks as if he feels out of place up there with Merle. But, he is exactly where he deserves to be. He is showing himself to be a humble and respectful man. Not to mention an enormous talent. Mr. Johnson is carrying on the kind of music Mr. Haggard, Jones, Jennings, Cash and many others devoted their lives to... And, doing it incredibly well!!
That surely would have made him more comfortable. You won't get anything from me other than great respect for Jamey Johnson! He has proven himself to be the best of the best.
I was at this concert, Jamey came in the back door partway through and I don't think he expected to be called onto the stage. It seemed like he was there just to be part of the audience.
That's my uncle playing guitar but now I have to give Justice to Jamey Johnson because he is a legend on his way I will always love my Merrill but Jamie you did a great job thank you so much for singing with him I love both of you amen.
omg, i totally agree that his body language shows how humbled he is by merle. i thought it was so awesome that when it was time for the band to come in that merle threw his hand back and stopped them just to let jamey sing. . . .
The reverence that the younger true country artists have for Haggard is so awesome to see. Toby Keith stepping in to help Haggard on his second to last performance in Feb of this year is another example. Go check that out,,,,it's on you tube, three songs,,,Haggard is on an oxygen tank and he asked Toby to help him out. I hope these men pass on what Haggard gave them! So true about country not being dead, but just hard to find,,,but it's there if you make the effort!
I feel blessed to have had the opportunity to see Merle at least once in my life. So sad I won't get to catch him this summer like I planned, so I used the money to see another legend again...Jamey Johnson
Would loved to hear Merle Haggard song this song in his heyday. He sounded so much like Lefty Fizzle when he was trying to become a singer songwriter and what a bloody beauty he became. THE BEST
I absolutely love Jamey. He is by far my favorite musician and songwriter. No one covers this song quite like him. Stay keeping it real JJ. You're amazing.
JJ does an absolutely wonderful job of covering just about any classic country tune. His own songs & talent far and away make Jamie the answer to The Possums question of "Who's gonna fill their shoes?
Man, this is awesome. How great it must have been to get up there with Merle and Kris. Jamey is a true country star, performing with true country legends. One day, he'll be legend too. Keep It up, Jamey!
You´re absolutely right "SCUBA Diver". And what a great honour to be invited by MERLE HAGGARD on stage.Hey Jamie, you´re accepted by the RIGHT people! Great per formance!!
Freaking Jamey Johnson is so real, so honest country that he just make me and I'm sure everyone that listens to him appreciate what true heartfelt music is!! Good and bad!!Love you Jamey can't wait to see you in Erie,Pa.!!!
Outstanding! Merle Haggard was the first real concert I ever saw, just over 30 years ago and still defines country music in my mind, along with Cash, Jennings, jones, Nelson, Williams Sr and Jr, and maybe Buck Owens. Johnson does a decent job here, and from what I see respects the guys who have come before
Imagine how much fun it was for Jamey to sing with these greats. Having the Hag watch you sing, watching your timing, watching your skills, must have been scary and great all at the same time.
Truly a song before its time. I was fortunate enough to get to know the songwriter, Danny Dill the last years of his life. He was a country boy from rural Tennessee but wrote a fairly complex song for the era.
Just decided to look this up, cause I was there that night. This was a co-headlining gig with Kris/Merle at the Ohio State Fair, and Jamey was there in the front row as a fan. Was a phenomenal show.
you can see the respect Jamie Johnson has for Merle and Chris Christopherson. when either one starts to sing he almost completely tones down not to over voice them
The only song by Jamie Johnson that you hear on the radio occasionally is You should have seen it in Color. I have his album and live it. You never hear Lucas Nelson (Willie's son) on the radio either. He's so good.
Great job Jamey! I like Jamey's laid back style and heartfelt traditional sound. Can you imagine standing next to Merle Haggard on the stage and singing Lefty Frizzell's Long Black Veil? I say Lefty because I can only associate him with this song and he was an obvious influence on Merle.
Absolutely the best phrasing for the sentiments meant to be expressed in this song that I've ever heard and I grew up loving Lefty wailing this thing on the cheap little radio in my increasingly dim past. I really like this guy - thanks for the posting. rt.
Jamey is snd has been the man for years glad he’s still holdin it down today got to see Merle just before he passed😞 but he was awesome and still had that great sense of humor🙏🏻
I've always loved this song and have heard Jamey sing it live. He certainly does it justice. But then, I don't think I've ever heard Jamey sing anything I didn't like.
It's awesome how Jamey is so effortlessly country. While all these other no talent ass clowns over do it. He just exudes it naturally, as for Merle , he's just a legend. Which in my book, Jamey will be too.
Jamey looked at merle all the time but Merle didn't, came through at the end with a smile. Chris ever the gentleman shook hand and smiled. thanks much for post.
I so enjoyed watching this video! Brought a really big smile to my face! Thank you! George Jones asked the question who's gonna fill their shoes.......Jamey Johnson has answered that question!
max dobbs ....Merle Haggard "Hag"...Legend...One of the most iconic voices in the history of country music...Working Man's Poet...a musical, lyrical genius...
Two fifths of whiskey and an eightball down we made it to this show. All my pics were blurry and we bought all the wrong size shirts, but it was fucking amazing! Tuscaloosa was proud to have these legends on stage together!
Jamey is , with out a doubt, the greatest country singer we have today....end of story. He is what we used to here on the radio any time we tuned into our local country station, thats what makes him so special...he is real
I was at this show and it was g.d. amazing. Rip Merle haggard
You gotta love how obviously humbled Jamey is in the presence of these legends. LOVE IT!!!
Jamey is humbled because he's a true human being not the Tennessee Hollywood bullshit performer, I believe he's a human before a performer.
@@victorrodea7163 Jamey is real country💗
You got to be somebody to have Haggard and Kristofferson back you up on guitars Thanks for keeping it going Jamey
I've always thought Long Black Veil is one of the most beautiful melodies, and poignant lyrics. Jamey certainly does it justice. Heard him sing it at one of his concerts. He really honors the old music. Kee it going Jamey!

You can tell he feels so honored
First time I've heard them together, looks to me like a passing of the torch. RIP the great Merle Haggard
Love how Jamey steps back and looks in total awe of Merle.
We had the great fortune of being there that night. Kris, Merle, and then Jamey. The greatest concert moment of my life and I have been to many. Thank you for a memory I will never forget.

Lisa Jones I am finally going to get to see him with Lynyrd Skynyrd in Indy July 31st. Looking forward to that. I'm a huge fan of Jamey Johnson!!
Lisa Jones You were there? ♡ What an awesome memory.
Its like that gotta go to Court feeling, just got caught with another Woman , or Absolute Respect all balled up in one!!
Country isn't dead. It's just hard to find.
That´s one of the best things I heard beside music about Country Music.
It's easy to find. Look for anything by Jamey Johnson, Ward Davis, Sturgril Simpson, ... just don't expect to hear it on "country" radio
is it "findable" on Sirius?
SCUBA Diver Amen Country Brother' good Country is Almost Dead. Glad someone still Rocks Country Roots!!! OOOOYAAAH!!!!
cody jinks is another
Fifty year later and Merle is still the boss.
Fifty = Five
Merle, Johnny, Marty and Waylon are playing this song as we speak.
Well here's my #1 & my #2 country singers performing together! Wish i had been there!
A passin of the torch ... the old to the new. Jamey Johnson the man bound to save TRUE country music!
wyatt mccubbin is on that mission as well...
Dennis Mackey So is Sturgill Simpson!
Yep and Yep
+cosmicowboy111 someone has to!
FACTS## JAMEY IS THE REAL DEAL, SO COOL TO SEE AN ARTIST WHO TRULY RELATES TO HIS LISTENERS. HARDCORE COUNTRY, JUST THE WAY I LIKE IT!😉💚💪🔥✌
That's my uncle playing guitar but now I have to give Justice to Jamey Johnson because he is a legend on his way I will always love my Merrill but Jamie you did a great job thank you so much for singing with him I love both of you amen.
2 of my greatest heroes on stage together... wish I could have been there.
omg, i totally agree that his body language shows how humbled he is by merle. i thought it was so awesome that when it was time for the band to come in that merle threw his hand back and stopped them just to let jamey sing. . . .

Jamey Johnson is the last hope for keeping classic country and outlaw country alive
David Black .....but then there's Chris Stapleton.
Micheal Hart
And there’s Cody Jinks!
Michael Hart I like Chris and Cody but Jamey is by far on another level as far as legend status
I miss u
Love Chris, but not really country much closer to blues
I feel blessed to have had the opportunity to see Merle at least once in my life. So sad I won't get to catch him this summer like I planned, so I used the money to see another legend again...Jamey Johnson

What a TALENT !!!
I absolutely love Jamey. He is by far my favorite musician and songwriter. No one covers this song quite like him. Stay keeping it real JJ. You're amazing.
agreed Amanda!!!! you are clever and have a keen ear in a true country music singer!!!!
JJ does an absolutely wonderful job of covering just about any classic country tune. His own songs & talent far and away make Jamie the answer to The Possums question of "Who's gonna fill their shoes?

He did a great job. The alive legends always have him sing and do their tributes

Truly a song before its time. I was fortunate enough to get to know the songwriter, Danny Dill the last years of his life. He was a country boy from rural Tennessee but wrote a fairly complex song for the era.
Jamey is THE REAL DEAL ! I don't know what his background is but somebody raised him RIGHT !
Damn I wish I could have been there for this .
Just decided to look this up, cause I was there that night. This was a co-headlining gig with Kris/Merle at the Ohio State Fair, and Jamey was there in the front row as a fan. Was a phenomenal show.
Pretty damned good when you have Merle Haggard playin guitar and Kris Kristoferson singin backup for you.
you can see the respect Jamie Johnson has for Merle and Chris Christopherson. when either one starts to sing he almost completely tones down not to over voice them
Jarrod Arnett your so wrong by this time hag n Kris didn't have the lungs n were given Jamey props by singing Merle's idol lefty.
maybe you should watch it again bud!
It's called Respect
Kris Kristofferson!!!
What do you know? Chris? Really? Christofferson? Really?
Merle Haggard and Jamey Johnson together. Nuf said people. It don't get no better than this.
Jamey Johnson and Merle Haggard = Priceless
Wonderful. Merle, Jamey, and kris.
old country wont die as long as Jamey Johnson is around
Greg E. .
Long as im around

Jamey an icon like Merle, he’s very well liked, and will go down as one of the greatest.
A great job Jamey I love it my ex husband called me up and told me to look up Jamey and I did and now I love his music .
Thank God for all those Musicians from the day who gave us all they had . And for those who still do . Thank you !!!
Absolutely the best phrasing for the sentiments meant to be expressed in this song that I've ever heard and I grew up loving Lefty wailing this thing on the cheap little radio in my increasingly dim past. I really like this guy - thanks for the posting. rt.
Heard it twice - loved it best both times. rt
Jamey just lets those ballads roll out like water off a duck. Merle is humbled.
For me this is the best I have ever heard this song sung.
Love this version of one of my all time favorite songs!
Hi Suzanne 💐💐
Jamey is snd has been the man for years glad he’s still holdin it down today got to see Merle just before he passed😞 but he was awesome and still had that great sense of humor🙏🏻
Nice job Jamey. Merle doesn't perform with just anybody. You did yourself proud. Rip hag. You were the best
I've always loved this song and have heard Jamey sing it live. He certainly does it justice. But then, I don't think I've ever heard Jamey sing anything I didn't like.

The voice of jamey is the spirit of the real country. I cant want till hè comes to europe
It's awesome how Jamey is so effortlessly country. While all these other no talent ass clowns over do it. He just exudes it naturally, as for Merle , he's just a legend. Which in my book, Jamey will be too.

Music that will last forever! Awesome
even with one foot in the grave Merle had more talent than any of these new punks RIP mighty merle
Love me some Jamey Johnson !!!!!
wow!what a treat.God rest ole Merle.
Love this... the way he slowed it down too fits this song very well. I do say this slowed down version is my favorite.
+Eric Maxson If you think this is slowed down, go find the rolling stones version, they do it as a VERY slow ballad
that's just pure COOL right there.
2 legends and 1 damn fine torch bearer.
Merle, George and Hank are my favs but John Anderson is right on their tails. Great vid. Thanks!
3 Great singers !!!!!
Absolutely beautiful ❤️❤️❤️
Beautiful, this is perfect.
Pure Class! Thats all i have to say about Jamey Johnson.
Jamie really is the next generation of country music.
I love this song! Thanks for sharing.
remember when country music was this good? carry the torch Jamey.
wow what a talent❤
2023 still listening to real country ❤
who is that old man playing the guitar? Only the best country singer ever to sing a country song.
If am not mistaken, it is Kris Kristoferson ...
+jerenita fagayan I think he meant Merle.
max dobbs ....Merle Haggard "Hag"...Legend...One of the most iconic voices in the history of country music...Working Man's Poet...a musical, lyrical genius...
Me reading the first sentence: 😡 "Why you!."
Me after reading the second sentence: 👍😉
That's not Waylon.
The New Riders of the Purple Sage covered this song and it used to be my favorite, but I think this one may have to be number one now. Awesome voice!
Best concert I've ever seen of two greats
LOVE this!
Two fifths of whiskey and an eightball down we made it to this show. All my pics were blurry and we bought all the wrong size shirts, but it was fucking amazing! Tuscaloosa was proud to have these legends on stage together!
