These lyrics are perfect evidence of Neil punching well above his weight. Cool lyrics when the album came out but over the years... more and more meaningful and tear jerking.
'Mission' from this album is an absolute winner. The lyrics speak to a mature take on inspiration and obsession with creating art and music. It's wonderful. And Alex's solo to close out the song is one of his best. A must-listen. "I walk through their beautiful buildings, and I wish I had their dreams..."
Aimee Mann is endearing and hypnotic all at once. When she first. came out with till tuesday who would have thought she would have ever collaborated with the mighty RUSH. Love this song. It really pulls on the nostalgic heart strings, does it not?
All due respect, this is a song that needs the words to be heard. Beautiful, melancholy lyrics that address human longing like few ever written. Honestly, I dont see how anyone who thinks this life is all we have, who doesnt know the God of time, can listen to this without being overtaken by sadness.
You can say that about pretty much every Rush song since Neil joined the band, but his lyrics got a lot more personal and relatable after Moving Pictures. It's why I love 80s and 90s Rush.
I agree. Not one of their better reactions. They spent more time doing research and trying to figure things out than actually taking in the song. Bummer.
Welcome to this album. From all us Canadians, sun is shining.... beer is cold..... Some steak grilling! Best of the "Day" to you! {We should make these two honourary Canuks}
The female voice is American singer-songwriter Aimee Mann and she only sings the line "Time stand still", the rest of the lyrics are sung by Geddy, the only time Rush used another singer. I know so much about Rush now, and it's because of you guys lol. I had a bit of a hard time adjusting to this album, Hold Your Fire, but there are a couple of songs I do like, Force Ten is a great song from that album. I still don't know every song on this album.
Hold Your Fire is my 2nd favorite album in all music history. This masterpiece is better than all other artists albums except Tales From Topographic Oceans.
I heard TSS on the radio when it was released and I was so pumped. I had started listening to Rush between Pictures and Signals and loved every album, until this one. It is still the one which probably has the fewest songs I like (from song start to end) on it. TSS I still love. Also Prime Mover and High Water. Most of the rest I might like the chorus but not the verses, and then vice versa on other singles. But those three I do like.
@@PhilipPedro2112 I hear Geddy doing the main vocal and the backing vocal in the chorus and other sections. I don't hear her other than those 3 words, time stand still and maybe a bit of humming around 3:30 minutes into the song on spotify.
This was the current album when I became a Rush song. Had only heard the big songs. Then a friend dragged me to see them in concert. Needless to say, WOW! I was hooked. So this album holds a special place in my heart. Time Stand Still... I always liked it.... Then I reached my 50s,and it takes on a whole new relevance. 😊😎
Hardcore fan for over 45 years and this album creates some division amongst Rush fans…you either like it or hate it!! I personally love it!!! Some of Neil’s best lyrics are on Hold Your Fire! I don’t mind the keyboards at all…this song always invokes great emotion when I hear it❤🇨🇦
Hold Your Fire is my 2nd favorite album in all music history. That's right, only Tales From Topographic Oceans is better than Hold Your Fire, which is Rush's phenomenal masterpiece.
Yes, this was a big hit in 1987. Aimee Mann was fairly popular in her band, Till Tuesday. They didn't play this song live much because, well, Aimee Mann couldn't be there. Several good songs on this album including Mission and Turn the Page to name a couple.
Aimee Mann - Til Tuesday (Voices Carry) - however, her voice is nothing like Chrissy Hynde’s - totally different. If you are not familiar with the Pretenders, it might be time to start - Chrissy is one of the best bad-asses in the biz.
Music from Rush, Yes, Genesis, ELP, was all about continuous re-invention !! this track is another example of Rush expanding there musical horizons great sound as always 👏
Guys, I love Hold Your Fire! But then again, I'm an 80's guy, so I loved the synth-era Rush, along with all the rest. You should check out their song from this album called "Force 10"!! It's a killer! Also, listen to all of HYF, it's great!
Please listen to EVERY full album....heh heh......seriously even it you did, you would not be disappointed by any, they all have excellent value and style for the time period that they were produced in. Cheerz!!!!
I've requested this album repeatedly on every CZcams channel :( I LOVE Hold Your Fire. Force Ten, Mission (Live), Turn the Page... with maybe the exception of 1 song, this is a great album. But Rush fans refuse to acknowledge that 🤔
Nick & Lex You would love the song Mission from Hold Your Fire album. The US Army did an amazing tribute to Neil with Time Stand Still. I Love Hold your Fire album Mission is my favorite song. Force Ten is a great song. Happy Canada Day. ❤🔥
Oh no! Not this tear jerker! Geddy just keeps it together through this nostalgic juggernaut. Geddy is the big brother I always wanted as a kid. Love Rush! Love you guys Kevin11
For full closure you really should listen to their final studio album, "Clockwork Angels." Every band, all musicians, have an end to their career. But like the ghost of a phoenix, Angels soared flaming into the beyond. Some spirits just cannot be killed.
I saw RUSH on this tour, fantastic concert. They did not have the guest vocalist, Aimee Mann, with them during the tour , they had her recorded vocals coming through the PA. system.
One of life's great mysteries to me, is how little this album is reacted to. Hold Your Fire is easily the best album from the great 3, as I like to say, that being the 80's masterpieces, Grace Under Pressure, Power Windows & Hold Your Fire, with the latter being Rush's 80's opus as far as fusing synth, bass, guitar & drums is concerned. You won't find a better example of bringing all that together in perfect compositional music form. No one comes close. The opening track from Hold Your Fire is Force 10 & if you ever wanted a musical slap in the face, that would be it. From there it's just banger after banger of perfectly crafted rock-synth genius & you can tell that this is a culmination of what Rush's 80's sound would be. It's an absolutely beautiful album. Presto & Roll The Bones are also fantastic albums that go in a slightly different direction but still signature Rush.
I know everyone has already identified Aimee, but I wanted to note also that they sampled her voice when recording this record, and her voice shows up as a sample all over this record. You can hear it in Force Ten and a few others.
This was their first radio single from the album, I remember the day I heard it on "release day" and came in after it had started and was like "OMG, is that Rush??? It IS!"... I like all their generations of playing styles, this was definitely a "bit different" but one of my favorite songs of all times (as a (then aspiring) keyboardist, I loved this album and the synths, it still had plenty of hard driving rock songs as well on it, it was actually much more "introspective/meditative" in the lyrics overall for the album, than the prior direction which were trending more "future-philosophic" in nature. If you wanted trivial lyrics with hard rocks, this isn't the album (although it was actually one of their best in radio play singles compared to some that got almost none, this had I think 3 songs that hit rotation enough that right after release you'd hear at least one during a day on the local rock radio, but nothing like Tom Sawyer popular). For me, this is the album to listen to when in a "mellow thoughts" mood. Counterparts is the one for a more "humanistic" take, Vital Signs and Signals are the "80s-here-and-into-the-future" vibes, etc, (actually probably the 2 albums that get the least play in my collection honestly, although Farewell To Kings may be less played, I actually like the compositions on FTK better, but you have to be in a certain mood, LOL)... Anyhow, love ya'lls reactions!
This is not a criticism but rather a testament to the brilliance of Rush. With as good as this song is, it probable does not make my top ten Rush songs … and that’s saying something. Thanks for another great review!
I was 17 when this came out. I had just recently become a Rush fan. This was the first new release album they did when I had become a fan. I got it the first day it came out and listened the heck out of it. I rarely visit it now. 🤦🏻♂️
Neil😇 wrote this at a point in his life where he was always on the go and had to learn to make the best of it, and to take advantage of everything. When I was on a US Navy ship, I had their greatest hits CD in my office. It played the whole time.
Neil in 2014: "A song I still really like. Autobiographical in a sense. The whole thing of wanting to slow things down and absorb the moment. Feel this moment a little bit stronger, since we can't adjust the time to have more. I get frustrated when people say where did the time go. You just weren't paying attention. A day is a day, a month is a month, a year is a year. For me, it started in 1986, I remember sitting down and writing why 1986 was the greatest year ever. So if I was able to think that way in '86, now I know even better to value the passing of time and the richness of experience."
Hold Your Fire has a bunch of really great, more commercial-sounding tunes and not to be sexist, but it is lyrically deep and seems to connect easily with the female persuasion. Geddy's voice is smooth, restrained, and less of an acquired taste. This is the album after Power Windows and before Presto. Top songs on the record, in no particular order, are Force 10, Time Stand Still, Open Secrets, Mission, Second Nature, and Lock and Key. The playing is incredible and a very refined, but smooth. It's Rush's closest thing to adult contemporary. At the time, it alienated some of their hard rock fans, because while contains incredible songs, musicianship and performances, it is definitely Rush lite.
This was the first new Rush album to come out on Compact Disc back in September 1987. As a result, Rush albums got a little longer because there was more time to play with. What a great song with lyrics that get more timely as the years roll by, great pick and reaction!
Just saw the band Progject last night. You should check them out if they come to your area. They do covers of Yes, Genesis, ELP, Tull, King Crimson, UK, Gentle Giant, Rush, Kansas, etc. Band was started by the drummer Jonathan Mover who played with GTR, Marillion, Alice Cooper, Satriani, Mike Oldfield and the Tubes. Guitarist is Mike Keneally who played with Zappa, Steve Vai, Satriani, and Devin Townsend, Ryo Okumoto on Keys who played with Spock's Beard, Asia, Phil Collins, Chris Squire, Pete Griffin on bass who played with Zappa plays Zappa, Edgar Winter, Dethklok. New singer just joined from Milan, Alessandro Del Vecchio. Great show!!
I'm not sure what you guys were reading online, but the female vocalist is Aimee Mann, from the band "Til Tuesday". I believe that Aimee Mann is a fellow Canadian as well. Chrissy Hynde is a bona fide rock star in her own right, but she was not a part of this studio recording. (If she ever covered this song or made a stage cameo to sing that part during a Rush show, I've never heard anything about it, and I'm a life-long Rush fan.)
I see that you corrected yourselves... sorry that I "jumped the gun". I should have let the whole video play out before commenting. Anyway, keep up the good work!
@@CygnusKC In my comment I put she was Canadian, and then edited it when I found out she's an American Girl, I have no idea why I thought she was Canadian :P. Same! I jumped the gun too, haha!
great reaction to a great album!!! Please listen to entire album, specifically Open Secrets, Prime Mover, Second Nature, Mission and High Water! All very beautiful Song! my mom is 80 and this is her favorite album by Rush! Definitely a favorite of mine even though its less progy but more melodic than their past albums
Love this song. Listen to the lyrics. Neil out did himself on this one. BTW, Rush are from Toronto lol. Montreal Quebec is a great place to visit but Quebec City is even better. Great stuff folks...
The Rush Hold Your Fire tour was the first concert that I chose to attend and the first time I ever saw Rush live (Frank Erwin Center, Austin, TX 1/30/1988). Just an incredible experience, especially Neil's drum solo which blew me away. Good memories. Thanks Nick and Lex! 👍
Hehe . . . wow! What a cool perspective though you got from that time. Those 2 albums (I LOVE Presto) are dear to me because I made a best friend who was a fellow artist and a Rush and Kansas fan, then we met a "3rd" guy who also loved Genesis and was an artist, and we exchanged lots of music :).
Great discovery guys! This may be considered the last '80s Rush album sequencers and synth textures everywhere, hi-fi Wal bass sound. Though Presto was released in 1989, it spearheaded the '90s Rush sound. Geddy goes back toi the Jazz Bass, Alex dropped some delays and took a page of his own book back. HYF is highly emotional, less preaching and more dealing with it. My favorite for many years, this album is a dish for a connoisseur. May you enjoy it as the fine vintage it is!
Great song choice! I love this song! I got into rush into the 90s so I don’t view them as Rush “periods”, I love all their stuff I own m, some more than others, but still… I don’t own that album and just looking at the song titles, it seems like it’s the only one I know… They have a Documentary called named after the song
Even older Rush fans who adapted to the Signals, Grace Under Pressure, Power Windows, phase didn't like "hold your fire". The concert was very good though and the album art and tour book art were great. I find the best use of this album is listen to it while cycling. Which I guess is what Neil was doing.
Thanks for reacting to this song. I happen to love '80s Rush, because I grew up in the '80s and like music from that era in general. (By the way, Aimee Mann was in the band Til Tuesday, and their big hit 'Voices Carry' is also worth a reaction). Personally, I really like Geddy's vocals in the '80s and into the '90s; he had a mellower, more melodic delivery. I suggest checking out the song 'Mission'; my personal favorite is the live version from Birmingham in 1988; Alex's guitar solo at the end is among his most emotional.
You should DEFINITELY check out "Mission" from this album!!! It is phenomenal, and am sure you all will agree!!! And the wonderful Aimee Mann on vocals!!! So much Rush music to discover off of the albums Signals, Hold Your Fire, Grace Under Pressure ("Early Distant Warning"!!!!), Roll the Bones, Counterparts, Test For Echo, Presto, Vapor Trails!!!! Sooooo much!! And if you want to go further, you should check out Til Tuesday (Aimee Mann). From Til Tuesday's first album "Voices Carry" and "You Know the Rest", and quite a few great songs from their albums Welcome Home and Everything's Different Now!!! Oh, and don't forget Geddy Lee's solo album released in 2000!! I actually like the second half of that album more than the first half....
played this tour in glagow. man it was unreal. great album one of my fav power windows is more rockier but still so fresh even to this day, but do the full album man
Another great Canadian band that you touched on a while ago is Max Webster. You heard the song "Battle Scar." This was the surprise that included Rush. You need to dive down that Mighty Max Machine rabbit hole in the future starting off with "The Party". In terms of more Rush, I'd have to say have a listen to Witch Hunt if you haven't already. Such a haunting song. Have an awesome day guys and thanks for the shout out for Canada Day!
I just read Narvik's comment, that this and Presto were his first albums ... I probably would have liked it more, then now, as I heard Permanent Waves, Moving Pictures and Signals before. It's just a different sound, not bad, but not as good as early 80s🤘
This whole album is definitely more on the pop side with the exception of the first song but after so many years I have grown to like it. Yes you guys definitely need to do rush at least maybe every 3 weeks or once a month. They are the best in my opinion
That is Aimee Mann from Til Tuesday

great reaction to a great album!!! Please listen to entire album, specifically Open Secrets, Prime Mover, Second Nature, Mission and High Water! All very beautiful Song! my mom is 80 and this is her favorite album by Rush! Definitely a favorite of mine even though its less progy but more melodic than their past albums
Open Secrets was my headphone tester back in the walkman years, if they could handle the sub-low drum on the fourth measure, they passed 🤘😎
@@ztazon My FAVE track on the album . . . Alex makes his guitar WEEP!
Another great album is Moving Pictures. Several terrific songs.👍🤠🇨🇦
Love this song. Listen to the lyrics. Neil out did himself on this one. BTW, Rush are from Toronto lol. Montreal Quebec is a great place to visit but Quebec City is even better. Great stuff folks...
HYF is the most beautiful of Rush! My favorite album of thiers
Admittedly, I love this album. Glad you enjoyed the song. The video is fun and kind of silly.
Hold Your Fire and Presto were my first albums and I thought this was the sound of Rush.
Hehe . . .
Chrissy Hine would have been good, but Aimee did an amazing job of backing Geddy
Hold Your Fire is one of their stronger 'later' albums. Always enjoyed that one and Power Windows as well. T
Great song choice! I love this song!
I got into rush into the 90s so I don’t view them as Rush “periods”, I love all their stuff I own m, some more than others, but still… I don’t own that album and just looking at the song titles, it seems like it’s the only one I know…
They have a Documentary called named after the song
Thanks from Canada Eh! My wife loves this song, one of her favourites from the 80"s. When are you guys going to do The Garden?
Chrissy Hynde? Where are you getting this info? This is Aimee Mann, then singer bassist of Til Tuesday ("Voices Carry.")
As some have mentioned the US Army version of this song as a tribute to the passing of Neil Peart is so touching, bring Kleenex
The entire álbum is great. Specially Mission, Hold your Fire and Tai Shan
We may be 5 on the planet that actually enjoy "Tai Shan" :p.
@@mvunit3 yes! I just love this song!
Lead singer of Til' Tuesday, Aimee Mann really adds a great dimension to this song. Video also strong.
Prime Mover from this album - super easy to get lost in it. Great to see you guys into the deeper 80s Rush! ✌🏻
Neil just goes nuts at the end. It's a sad song, but hopeful too.
This whole album is excellent, Prime Mover is another good choice from this album.
High water and open secrets are my favourite
Great Tune cheers from Canada eh!!
You should try Open Secrets from this album and Turn the Page. The best songs of this album
played this tour in glagow. man it was unreal. great album one of my fav
power windows is more rockier but still so fresh even to this day, but do the full album man
Another great Canadian band that you touched on a while ago is Max Webster. Have an awesome day guys and thanks for the shout out for Canada Day!
rush the best from argentina
I just read Narvik's comment, that this and Presto were his first albums ... I probably would have liked it more, then now, as I heard Permanent Waves, Moving Pictures and Signals before. It's just a different sound, not bad, but not as good as early 80s🤘
This whole album is definitely more on the pop side with the exception of the first song but after so many years I have grown to like it. Yes you guys definitely need to do rush at least maybe every 3 weeks or once a month. They are the best in my opinion
Geddy did all the harmonies himself. The only thing Aimee sang was that soft "Time stand still"
Try Lock and key from this album.😊😊😊
At the time, 80’s Rush got some hard knocks. It’s great to see reactors hear this music for the first time.
Rush got more hard knocks in the 70's. The 80's was their most successful period. I know what you mean though.
So, now you need to listen to The Pretenders - Back on the Chain Gang and Til Tuesday - Voices Carry
Yea Canada day, I think I may want to move there very soon. Great reaction.
Maybe for Rush, you guys could do 2 passes through the song: once for the music, once for the lyrics?
Hola muchachos . Esperando a Los Jaivas tema tarka y ocarinas from Australia
I am 46 and i know rush since i was 10
