- Can you upload sports highlights to CZcams and monetize them? I will aim to answer that question in this video by sharing my experience with running an NBA highlights channel called Ensign Hoops.
My basketball channel: / @ensignhoops - Jak na to + styl
Love the information provided in this video as well as your channel. God bless bro!
Appreciate it!
I appreciate your sharing... Thanks man
No problem, thanks for watching!

Great content 👍 I wanted to ask, were the copyright claims occurring right away during the upload process, or did they arise after days or weeks? I've uploaded some soccer videos, and I'm concerned about potential claims, after watching your video I'm thinking of deleting them. By the way, you've gained a new subscriber!"
Thanks for subscribing! Some of the videos would get claimed right away. Others would get claimed a day or two later.
Thanks for sharing your story. That was really interesting.
No problem
Thank you for making us aware. I am so sorry that you had to go through that many inconveniences. Subscribed! God bless!
Welcome to the community 🤝
thanks for the video. really enjoyed it. Very chill and informative
Glad you enjoyed 🙏
hello where do you download nba videos?
This is a great video very straight forward !
Thank you! 🙌
Hey bro, thanks for the video. There’s a lot of value in it just one question what do you use to edit your CZcams videos or make your NBA clips or how to get the NBA clips if you make a video about that
I use Adobe Premiere to edit my videos
@@JacobCEdmunds thanks appreciate it
Very informative video. Thank you.
Thanks for watching 🙏
Thank you for posting! I've recently started my channel and was sure I could use some short sports footage if I just wanted to comment on them. Two questions though: if I haven't get any copyright notifications during the upload (I've even got one like "this footage is copyrighted but the owner allows to use it"), could I still be demonetized in the future (if I'm ever eligible for YPP)? And the second one: can I use someone else's photo in a thumbnail (I edit them though, always add some touches to it, combine it with other photos etc).
1. If you have tons of copyright claims, you are at risk of getting demonetized. A claim every once in a while is fine.
2. It’s kind of a gray area there. As long as you are transforming the original photo by editing it, you should be fine, but be careful because you could get sued by a photographer.
@@JacobCEdmunds Thank you!
Man you story is very close to my channel. I upload fan reactions from english premier league games and initially put a less than 5 second clip of the goals to illustrate the reactions. I got monetized and then demonetized twice even though I didn’t get copyrights claims on those videos. Mostly because of the heavy swearing in the videos. Now I also got paranoid about any legal action and decided to trim all the highlights from the videos. I lost 2.5 of my 4 million views because you can’t edit a video that has more than 100k views and had to make those videos private. Now I’m moving forward with posting the videos with no possibility of getting a copyright but also no monetisation. I set as a goal to get 100k subscribers just because I enjoy doing it even though it’s time consuming.
man I see a lot of channels monetized with football highlights without even talking... some add commentary but some just use meme sound over some funny player moves etc.. how they are monetized?
@@ANASG968 Yeah exactly like this channel with 300k subs totally monetized and I have no idea how! www.youtube.com/@SEN31Extra
Yeah, it's so hard to make money from sports on CZcams because of all the copyright issues that happen even when you follow the rules. You are not breaking copyright laws by using clips from games if there are reactions or commentary with it, but lots of times the clips get claimed anyway.
Good Job like the info ! Thx
No problem!
I find it strange as there are channels that use full NBA highlights on a FREE license (fair use) and are still monetized. Therefore it could be a good case for an appeal if the claims came from them not from NBA (as you mentioned).
Great content, thank you for the motivation!
Appreciate the support 🙌
@@JacobCEdmunds hello where do you download nba videos?
Twitter or NBA.com
@@JacobCEdmunds but there's no problem with being a reused video and a video that can take a strike???
thank you for the insight, but did what you say also apply for livestreamers stream highllight?
I don’t have any experience livestreaming, so I’m not sure
I have a question, On my recent video the NBA "SUPERHUMAN" Moments do you think if I add more effects and music it could get monetized? Because the NBA shorts that I do, I was told there's no problem monetizing it. Thanks!
It’s less a question of “could it get monetized?” and more “will it get copyright claimed?”
I’ve dealt with copyright claims on a video where I added a video of someone reacting to the highlights.
Just know that if you upload NBA highlights you are almost certainly going to get a copyright claim and will have to dispute it every time.
Man, my hopes of having a monetized CZcams channel got dashed after hearing this, I recently started a youtube channel on NBA highlights like MJ's highlights and all that, I obviously have no subscribers right now but I thought I could make it due to false belief that NBA perhaps doesn't strike a channel with copyright claim, I wonder how channels like, House of Highlights, GD Factory Clips and others pull it off, may be they have understanding with both NBA and CZcams and others have no monetization at all, thanks for sharing your experience on making videos on NBA highlights, thanks
House of Highlights is owned by Turner Sports/Bleacher Report so they have a license to post NBA highlights
Thanks man,,for your advice,,I will delete all highlights NBA in my channel because it's copyright, but the email of ypp said that this is not affected my channel, thank you
Hey man, nice video. Question for you. What happened after you filed a dispute and they rejected it so you filed an appeal? Did they ever comply and take their copyright claim down? Or did they keep their claim on there and not allow you to monetize
Usually after the appeal they would not respond. So after 30 days the claim would be released
Thank you bro. Godbless you.
Appreciate the support
Hey Jacob. I appreciate this video very much. I’ve got a channel I started about 4 months ago. It’s all sports YT shorts. Mainly basketball as well. I use clips and a lot of post work with adobe software, after effects etc. In a section, I have playlists that focus on nba trivia, where I use still images of players with animation. I guess what I’m asking, from your experience, when is something considered fair use and when is it considered, hey your robbing us, you get a strike? Just trying to figure this out. Thank you, and I subbed to you.
There are a few keys to fair use:
1. Is your use of the content a substitute for the original?
2. Have you transformed the content to make it different than the original?
If you are making a mixtape or adding visual effects and music it is more ok than just reuploading clips, because you are transforming the original content and making a new thing. Just simply posting highlights is not fair use.
However, even if you follow fair use laws, there is still a pretty good chance you will get a copyright claim.
@@JacobCEdmunds got it, appreciate you 👍❤
I'd like to do a voiceover play-by-play over a certain play. Could that get copyright claimed?
In my experience, even if you do a voiceover, it can still get copyright claimed
Although our channel is not monetized yet there are ways around this. The sports channels are some of the hardest to make videos for but if you are dedicated there is a demand for the videos.
There will always be demand, the question is whether you want to deal with all the workarounds. I decided it wasn’t worth it for me, but lots of people have succeeded.
yeah it always comes down to how much work you want to put in and for you just having fun I cannot blame you@@JacobCEdmunds
Bro, this video comes quite at a good time. As you dealt with basketball, I deal with surfing. In many of my videos, either I take all the footage from wsl (world surf league) yt channel and do some quick edits, either I take multiple footages of surfers channells and put it in one video, either I take one surfer's video and make it shorter (ie my video my video that did almost 100k two weeks ago). So, my channel uses stuff from other creators and I reuse content. AND IT WORKS !!! (that's the problem). I took a video of 8mn, and made it two minutes. I put a music behind. And easy 100K views. And I have many videos like you that perform well (many of them are around 20k while I take world surf league footage entirely). I am never copyrighted by world surf league. I am only coprighted by the musics I use. I don't knopw what to do.
I did like to get some words from you
WAITTTTTTT IS CZcams ALREADY CHANGE THEIR RULE FOR MONETIZATION (get money from youtube ads), ??? because from what i know you have touch 1000 subscriber and 4000 watch time but why you already get MONETIZATION infact you only have 667 subscriber, please explain
@@luthfan9395 yh ofc, I don't get money yet, but that's not my problem. I want to know if it's allowed to steal content
Hi! Thank you for making this video. I was wondering, do you think the shorts that I create would be considered monetizable?
The same copyright rules apply. Your videos look like fair use to me, so you should be fine. Have you received any copyright claims?
Do you thing grabbing a small part of nba highlights will be reused content? Just worried as i just monetized
It depends on how you use the highlights. If you are adding commentary, edits, etc you should be fine.
you didn't do any kind of editing on your videos? zooming in on the video or messing with the saturation or something?
Nope
Great suggestions. I'm starting a sports channel and I think your video gave me some insight
Glad I could help!
Did you ever start?
@@StingerFromAbove . The channel is still growing. Very slowly though
Still in growing pains. Very slowly so,no money yet😢@@StingerFromAbove
@@SPORTSSPECTRA-mt9liwere you able to get some copyright issues with regards to this kind of contents?
Can I monetize even if I'm just analyzing player games or creating stories about NBA players
Thanks, your video help a lot here. I am doing Badminton sports highlights also. Unfortunatly my channel is channel is no longer eligible for monetization due to Reuse Content. According to your experience, may i know how to solve this? I totally have no ideals now....😞
You’re going to have to delete the videos with copyright claims and reapply for monetization
Thanks, my channel is also about basketball but it's in Filipino. I haven't had a copywrite strike yet but who knows.
Same here started posting highlights in March 2022 got rejected, deleted all the videos and started doing commentary on sports topics using pictures and some videos that relate to the topic am talking about and still got rejected so atp there’s no point
Yeah it’s just not worth it
How did you get rejected with just pictures?!
@@jacobtheanalystit's cap. I'm doing tennis f1 boxing commentary videos with their pictures. nothing happened yet
@@kedrpraoso ur channel is monetised?
So whats ur solution to it?
I'm curious about the copyright law in the Mainland. Are you saying that the footages you obtained were from China and with Chinese commentary despite being an international event or sport such as NBA?
The footage I obtained from China was of Chinese Basketball Association games. Those games took place in China and the broadcasts originated from China, so my understanding was they fell under Chinese copyright law.
The same rule would not apply to NBA footage, even if it had Chinese commentary, because the event happened in the USA and the broadcast originated from the USA. Plus the NBA owns the rights.
@@JacobCEdmunds I figured this much. There is no way of getting this done. Funny how some CZcamsrs get a free pass with "Breakdown" videos. It's too much work only to get claims and strikes months ahead.
what program are you using when recording video highlights of game? Was planning to get nba pass and just record games highlight and thinking what best way to do it.
I usually just screen recorded it on my phone
Jacob bro ❤ plz come lets start again what we love to do, there are now many channels who are posting videos of nba with many edits and voice over, they dont upload highlights directly, and this is under youtube copyright policy, so lets start again, its will be fun 🎉
hey bro, i have a question, so i am in kind of the same situation, one video made me 90$ before it got claimed will i get that 90 ?
Yes, you will get that $90 as long as your channel is still part of the CZcams Partner Program
@@JacobCEdmunds thank you very much
what about collecting the 4000 hours from highlight videos also 1000 subscribers then remove those videos and make one video which is fully made by you and apply for chaine monetization review? will this works?
If you delete the videos, you will lose the watch hours. Also, your subscribers will unsubscribe because the content changed. I wouldn’t recommend it.
What if you you edit the video and make a less than 5 seconds clip for your youtube shorts like funny moments etc. does it still copyright claim?
You are welcome to try
@@JacobCEdmunds actually I saw a lot of that kind channel were they only upload nba shorts and some have millions of sub and they are monetized according to social blades
Hello, so does that mean the famous basketball channels not earn money from YT? (e.g. Heat Check, BBALLBREAKDOWN, etc.) Thank you..
Most likely they are not making money from ad revenue, but have outside sponsorships
Hello bro, Can I monetize even if I'm just analyzing player games or creating stories about NBA players
Technically yes, but you will likely still get copyright claims
Where do people find the highlights and record them from though ? Can I just record them from the nba app ?
Usually from illegal streams. The NBA app and other official streams have software to prevent screen recording
Hey bro. Great video. Do you by any chance know any football websites I can get to download videos so that I create my own highlights?
I don’t unfortunately, other than Twitter
Hey man, I have one question: I wanna post some Optus sport highlights into a compilation. Am I allowed to?
You will most likely get a copyright claim. Maybe even a strike.
@@JacobCEdmunds oh ok. May I ask how do the other CZcamsrs not get copyrighted?
They probably do get copyrighted
If you already monetize, then you upload video with copyright claim, can i get demonitize my channel?
Yes, if you get too many copyright claims, your channel can get demonetized.
A few copyright claims are fine, but if you have a lot, then you could be in trouble.
@@JacobCEdmunds but if after a copyright claim if i will set to private or delete the video, is it ok? Can i withdraw the earning before copyright happen?
You will still get paid for the views you received before the claim is made. However, if you get demonetized, you won’t get paid.
I uploaded highlights video in my channel video and no copyright claims i did some edit cropping, voiceover, some stickers and more,. Can i monetize my channel?
Just because you have no copyright claims now doesn’t mean you won’t get them in the future. The only way to know is if you apply for monetization and find out.
Did you edit the videos at all?
Visually, no. But I did try adding a voiceover.
can i react to basketball highlights and monetize them?
Yes, that would fall under fair use
@@JacobCEdmundsdo you know what to say in the dispute to help increase the chances of the video getting monetized?
NBA does NOT seem to have any copyright issues at all.
Do u think I can monetize
So can you get copyrighted even if you don’t monetize your videos?
Yes
Bro.Where can I find highlight and moments clips without copyright?
Unless you take the video yourself, someone else will always own the copyright
@@JacobCEdmunds ok thanks for video ♥️
No problem!
Hi siiiir i have a question if there’s any chance that i could get monetized on youtube shorts by nba highlights? Tnx for your response ❤
The same copyright rules apply to shorts. It’s possible, but unlikely unless you add music and lots of visual effects
Which website did you get your highlights from
Usually the NBA website
Even if all the videos have some edit from original?still they report that?
In my experience, yes
Before...I got copyright claim...and delete fast...but thats a 5 months ago I think...because I upload full Qrt of basketball game without edit...now I post in YTshorts...still NBA highlights but not full game...only poster dunk like that..I hope and pray they not report my channel...hoping...Thanks for your video...and for time to reply my question...God bless you🙏🙏🙏🙏
I’m doing the same with YTShorts.. just 15 sec highlights. Would be curious to know if anyone monetized are getting copyright claims on those types of videos
I have been sharing NBA highlights on my channel not a single copyright claim yet.
For me I didn’t get a ton in the beginning, but as my channel got bigger then pretty soon every single video was getting claimed
When I get the claims I just delete the video and find another one. All im doing is sharing what I enjoy watching and slowly building my channel. So far I have 110 subscribers. I welcome Ideas on how toake it better so I can start earning some💰💰
UEFA, EPL and Bundesliga have a lot, thankfully for me they are just claims and not copyright strikes on my channel.
Yeah, the European football leagues crack down hard on it
Hey what if I put a bunch of visual edits and sounds included into the videos?
Ultimately, you can do a lot of things to avoid the automatic copyright detection, but they can still go claim your video manually
@@JacobCEdmundswait so if I’m in Australia, and make nba edits, add fx, sound dadada, will I still get payed if I am monetised?
If your channel is monetized, you will get paid until the video gets copyright claimed
What if you edit the video like you just want to cover about the basketball play that was going on?
In my experience, I have still received a copyright claim, but then I had to dispute/appeal to get the claim removed
Does rebound get paid and why?
Rebound? Is that a channel?
@@JacobCEdmunds yes, nba
Yeah, they probably do. Their channel is different because they added graphics and stuff to transform the original content.
@@JacobCEdmunds do you think I could do this with WWE content? I heard they’re very strict but my plan is to edit the videos and transform the content into my own reviews like Rebound. What’s your thinking?
You can try it! Are there any other channels doing that for WWE?
My account is averaging 10 subscribers a week, is this normal?
That’s impressive in the beginning. The longer you post, the faster you will gain subscribers
hey man love your content just sub. I just started to get into the sports video editing world on CZcams and i see that if you do like less then 5 sec clips helps also videos that are not the NBA and nfl channel helps.
Welcome to the community!
Yes, I have seen that to be true as well.
Cant you still made money with partnerships?
What do you mean?
How about highlights on shorts?
It’s the same thing. You can still get a copyright claim on shorts
@@JacobCEdmunds i saw gd high light using nba highlight and still monetize
The NBA probably gets all the revenue though. If the league copyright claims the videos, then ads keep running and they get the money
Just make a little edits on your video and dont just hope on monetization voz youtube and facebook is hard to understand their policy.. Just grow your channel and just wait for sponsors and affiliate
Can you monetize boxing short edits ? I edit them a lot and try and tell a story with clips I don’t talk over them tho just wondering
I don’t have any experience with boxing clips, but it’s worth a shot as long as you are editing them
@@JacobCEdmunds thanks bro I appreciate
¡Gracias!
Thanks for the support!
interesting, I wonder how these asian channels that show sports highlights get away with it, they usually advertise a product at the end of the video as well
Honestly these big channels need to be kicked out of CZcams. They already have big broadcasting be shouldn’t be in this platform.
can you give me give me this account ?
so how its applyed to the mma and boxing stuff ?
The principle is the same: if you re-upload content that’s not yours, you will get claimed.
However, if you transform the content with editing you may be able to pass under fair use. I’ve heard they crack down pretty hard though, so I don’t know.
