And have a Memorial Day too! In Canada, we remember those who fought in all the wars so we can live in peace. And all those people who served in every conflict and all the fallen soldiers who gave their lives for us. Especially the 1812 war that is very special and dear to us. (we kicked the Imperialist slave-keeping Americans back to their own country) Look it up! 👍 Just think, if we didn't stand up and fight those primitive brutal bastard Americans then Canada as one of the most loved and peaceful countries in the world, we could be like those Imperialist Americans who are hated all around the world and their gun-loving nation that every minute somebody is killed by the gun. Oh no, thanks but NO! OK, this is just a joke I meant nothing by it. But 210 years ago it was something. (I learned it in school in Europe) But in all fairness, Canada is always taking the short stick. When the English is at war hey Canada come and help us. When the French are fighting they say hey Canada come to help us and the same as the Yanks. Canada is always being used by other bigger bully nations.

Those ovens are pretty cool. I did a little research and here are some facts about them: Standing at 30 feet tall and 27 feet in diameter with walls that are 2 feet thick at the base, the ovens were built by Italian masons who specialized in constructing them. Made from quartz latite welded tuff (volcanic rock), they are the best-preserved ovens of their kind in Nevada and were listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1971.

I've been watching you for about a year and I've enjoyed every episode. You bring forth so many positive values like love for family, patriotism, ethical living and adherence to wildlife regulations. I'm a lifelong South Carolina outdoorsman. Unlike you, I paddle through swamps with snakes & alligators... but my values are the same as yours. You would certainly be welcome in SC anytime. Perhaps we'll meet on the sacred Waccamaw River one day!

Jr, what's that device with, what looks like two antennae under your rear view mirror?
Great history on the charcoal ovens. Man always invents or dircovers ways to overcome and adapt. Not sure about using these for camping. Folks are going to muck up this beautiful area by leaving their garbage. I think these are granite stones?

The holes were at the base to get the fire going. Once it reached a certain point every hole in the structure was plugged so there was no oxygen. That's how charcoal is made.

Hope the family trip is going well. My first trip on US 50 was a family trip in 1963, going West to East, on our way to Michigan. I was 15 1/2 and US 50 was my first driving experience. My Dad pulled over and said, "it your turn". I drove every day on that trip and by the time we got home to CA, I was a very experienced driver. My last trip into Ely was 2015, and I was taking US 50 going West. So much history in Ely. I truly enjoyed being in the Hotel Nevada. History is great.

Wikipedia answers some of the questions you posed. The charcoal ovens are two miles to the south of the townsite. Six large ovens remain in excellent repair, 30 feet (9.1 m) high, 27 feet (8.2 m) in diameter, with walls 2 feet (0.61 m) thick at the base. The ovens were in operation from 1876 through 1879. They were built of quartz latite welded tuff by itinerant Swiss Italian masons who specialized in the ovens, who were known as carbonari. The beehive shape was designed as a more efficient version of the open-pit system that originated in Italy. The charcoal ovens prepared charcoal from locally harvested timber for use in the smelters at Ward, using 30 to 60 bushels of charcoal per ton of ore, for 16,000 bushels a day. The Ward ovens are the best-preserved of their kind in Nevada. They were listed in the National Register of Historic Places in 1971.

My husband and I really enjoy these videos . we love to fish here in southern Oregon where we live and one of our favorite lakes is called Fish Lake, less than an hour from where we live. ODFW releases tiger trout into that lake, to eat the tui chub, which are invasive. Looks like the trout you caught were those, not rainbow.

Guessing before you say anything, I'm guessing those stone domes were used to make charcoal. And the result...
    Hey, I was right!
Those are stones, not bricks. Even back in the 1800s they had sandblasting as a technique to cut stone, as well as steam-powered cutters. That's why the lines are so clean, those things were quarried with power equipment.

I love SCO we live deep in the SC mountains, CA. And love the channel. JuJu, Adrian, and the cousin are so lucky they have a dad like Senior. I think we would all want him to adopt us.or have a dad just like him. Fishing, boating, camping, road trips, hiking, hunting. I hope all them boys know they are the luckiest, to have such a loving dad who is a role.model and spends time. Hats off to senior

Hey, what’s the elevation of the locations you’re going to? Is that why it’s that cold?
I roam national forests, in northern Wisconsin… I love that old history… The old CCC camps and stuff… Yea, post-great depression, a lot of efforts were done to restore damage caused, in the era those kilns were built…

I’ve been to the charcoal kilns at Ted Turner’s place in Northern NM. Very cool seeing these elsewhere. As usual, thanks for bringing us along.

I go fishing for rainbow and brown trout in most of the rivers and lakes in Montana we also have a lot of minor activity up here too so you have to be careful how many fish you eat out of certain areas but we also have catch and release restrictions as well in some of the areas it’s a bummer that that fish didn’t survive but you also have to take into consideration that it is a lot easier to stun and knock out a trout by just throwing it back into the water which is one of the main reasons why most of the time we don’t take them out of the water and when we do release them we release them gently back into the current
