My favorite Deftones album. I spent 7 weeks in the desert in 2003 listening to this album every night. I still have the CD that I bought the day it came out. Been spinning it for 20 years now.
My favorite deftones album... Still remember being in a dark place myself when i listened to this album over and over again... Getting up, skating down the long ass road i used to live at , smoking that devils lettuce like a chimney with my cousins, trying to find a purpose... opening up with hexagram puts you instantly in the mood for wrecking shit/jamming
I was lucky enough to see them play Needles and Pins and Bloody Cape in the same show in December 2022. Seems as though Needles and Pins came a lock for their setlist over their tours throughout 2023
I remember doing a run through of their discography in high school and I didn’t really like this one on the first listen. I already loved Minerva, Hexagram and Good Morning Beautiful but it took a bit for me to come around to tracks like Uninteresting Event, Lucky You and Deathblow (something about Chino’s voice cracking in the chorus I didn’t like on first listen). One of my better relisten experiences for an album.
I remember when both St Anger and Deftones came out. I liked both at the time (I remember my gf at the time telling me that I was the only one she knew of that liked St Anger), but I liked Deftones more and it has stood the test of time. I still listen to it, while I don't think I've listened to St Anger since the mid 00's.
I love how Chino's guitar playing style is based on electronic sampling. It doesnt sound like a rhythm or lead guitar. Its something way too different from Stephen Carpenter's heavy riffage. It rides on what Steph is doing without cutting through it.
You made me appreciate this album so much more. Your appreciation for what the band is and the methodical explanations of the emotions in each song you give is impressive to say the least. Incredibly well done video
@@NocturneMusic hey man, I guess better to think you’re overdoing things rather than not putting in enough effort. Looking forward to anything Deftones or anything metal related in the future !
This has been the best narrator for deftones I have ever heard. I literally just hid out at work for 2 hrs to listen and watch every word of these deftones vids. This really made my day, Thank you.

I was 18 when that album came out. Preordered it at my local record store. I remember the day. I walked to the record store instead of driving, came home and listened to it beginning to end on my front porch and was blown away. There’s very few days in my life that I remember in such detail.
I've always loved Deftones but I only really listened to this album for the first time going through an incredibly rough breakup, I had turned to drugs, alcohol, and anything else I could get my hands on to get through it. This album was on, every waking minute of that year, truly a beautiful piece of work.
this album really helped go through a dark moment, it didn't made me feel better or anything, but this one really made me feel understood, and that my feelings were validated too, this also takes me back to a dark time of my life which i don't like going to, so i just listen to like 2 songs of that whole album... All i can say rn is.. poor chino bro
I always read Hexagram as about the interplay between audience and band during a concert. It's chaotic, potentially even violent; an intense communal experience like a religious gathering; a playful experience; a cycling of emotions and memories both positive and negative ("the camera makes you seasick" "your parents are proud", "god I trust everyone").
Per your question regarding Chino and Frank being in Seattle, the reason was the rest of the band felt they were comfortable with their parts, and so chino and frank went to Seattle to finish vocal layers, additional guitar and keys and atmosphere and frank was a big part of that record being in sequence they way it was due to then fine tuning everything so well.
An absolutely fantastic overview of this album. Read everything there is to read about this, but you unveiled new things and gave your own intriguing interpretations of each track. Loved it

Subs from me after binging all these Deftones docs. You do amazing work here and it should be more widely watched for damn sure. Battle axe from Deftones is probably one of my fave songs of theres. there seems a lot of meaning in simple lyrics but above that that riff slaps my face off every time i hear it.

This is my favorite album, from beginning to end, every time I listen to it is a shot of adrenaline and motivation, it brings me memories and at the same time generates new ones. An album that I personally think has no time.

It’s funny how my two favorite Deftones albums are from their “dark days” - Self titled, and Saturday night wrist. That was peak Deftones vibes. So good to see someone break down the genius of this album.
This record came at the tail-end of being in highschool. Such an important record for me. It may be my 2nd fav behind White Pony, but it's a special one.
Damn, I almost cried by the end of this video because I remembered HOW much I love this album. I picked it up, looked at the booklet and will listen to it right now. A fun fact that for me this album is associated with some of the best years of my life. I always knew that it was very depressive, but it didn't pull me into negative emotions, but taught me to experience strong feelings and live through them. Amazing job, Nocturne! I need this video on my hard drive!
Self Titled is my fav Deftones record of all time and second only to Black Sabbath Master of Reality as a whole for me. Fuckin heavy and painful record dark as hell and i love it so much.
whoa dude, this video capture everything on it! i ignore this album for a whole 3 years since it was released, and comeback with new perspective (weed), and BOOM! the best music ever made by humankind.
I recently got into this album, before it seemed too depressing and i mostly liked just few tracks. I always loved Minerva though, one of their top 10 best songs for me still. I don't know, maybe i have been pretty depressed myself lately. This album just suddenly clicked with me. Now it's my 4th favorite, behind White Pony, ATF and SNW, went above Diamond Eyes on my list. Deftones does have one hell of a discography. I would really like to hear Eros though.
Anniversary is my all time favorite tune. It makes me think of losing my loved ones, mainly my mom and grandma. Not a significant other necessarily. The water theme keeps coming back though, in waves, pun intended, when i hear digtal bath and sextape. High on the crest and crashing below while remembering embracing and yearning for Tonight, in the moment. Anything after is regaining strength and moving on. Cleansing of soul.
my fave album will always be ATF. But this album is very special... yes, its very depressing and dark. But at the same time its very intimate, pure, raw, emotional and authentic. Never heard anything like this. Even when chino doesnt like it, its good that it exists.
