  • A plan to remove Interstate 375 will not bring back the rich history lost when the area was razed to make way for the new road running through the center of Detroit in the late 1950s and early 1960s.

The area that was lost can't be brought back but 375 should still be removed. It is a huge cost of taxpayer money that takes up property that could be used for far more productive purposes. (opportunity cost)
And it would also officially acknowledge that building urban freeways through dense neighborhoods was wrong, and not even sensible from an economic/public policy perspective.

I was born and raised in Pontiac all my family is from Detroit, my mom joined the military and I spent most of my teenage years in the Seattle Tacoma area. It’s shocking understanding and seeing the difference in urban planning and policy between the regions Detroit ruined itself building the city solely around the automobile without a thought of walkability or mass transit. If Detroit would have never made those mistakes it could rival Midwest cities like Chicago, What Detroit did to its grid is terrible!!

Some years ago, my late mother (who grew up in Detroit during the Depression and the Second World War, graduating from Cass Tech in June 1946) told me that a lot of this so-called "urban renewal" was pushed by Mayor Cobo during the 1950s who was no friend of the African American residents of Detroit. Prior to that, I had hardly heard anything about this "urban renewal" (i.e. 'Negro removal').
I grew up in NW Detroit (near Six Mile & Livernois) between the early 1960s and 1991. My late parents were the second African American family to move into the neighborhood on our street, which is situated between Six Mile and Grove, one block from the University of Detroit.

It was known as 'Black Bottom' during colonial times, because the ground had a rich dark soil, and was highly prized for growing crops.

That has nothing to do with the economic base that we built there and white society was threatened by that, decimated it, and gave us projects that we didn't ask for. Red line the area by putting freeway through it and decimated our economic wealth we need reparations in Detroit. it's time for black Americans to stop playing around with these people.

@Palepride Worldwide no they were not slums those people had migrated in 1910 they have been there over 30 40 years. There was hospitals, grocery stores, beauty salons, hotels, schools, you name it it was there we were building up an economic base for our community and White society got jealous and destroyed it bottom line. Stop making excuses for your communities evil demonic Acts we are owed reparations. Point blank. Had they not have red line that area by putting freeway through it what would that community be now you making excuses does not change the narrative that white supremacy had a hand in destroying that so black Americans could not gain any economic success.

The powers that be always find a way to destroy the flourishing black community. They usually do it on the guise of redevelopment.

@YTHatesMe-999 well that is a common opinion.
Urban Renewal was a top-down centrally planned
Please read THE SLAUGHTER OF CITIES by E MIchael Jones
The Washington elites planned the destruction of working class ethnic, largely Catholic, urban centers in Philadelphia, Detroit, Clelveland, and Chicago.
The burgeoning Catholic population Irish Italian German Polish was perceived as a threat to WASP power elites.
On the other hand gentrification is a natural development. I do hate seeing working class.Poor being pushed out of neighborhoods by suburbanite.Or
      reloocated techies.
Mostly good but lots of unnecessary dislocation.

You know: some of that housing looks like it was pretty Old (1870-1880 Vintage?) and pretty Bad. I heard there was a lack of indoor plumbing. There were also rats in the area, and infectious diseases like Tuberculosis. It had to have been Very Overcrowded!
Not saying that it ALL should have been Demolished, however.

Those are called narratives, the community was no different then any other community at the time.
Abandon homes - renovate and rebuild.
Lack of plumbing - add plumbing, there’s plenty of neighborhoods and homes around the country that still operate off septic tanks or outhouses.
Rats - Have you been to NY?
TB - Destroy the neighborhood or 💀 the people, neither is how you deal with an outbreak and clearly the people that grew up in the neighborhood in this video didn’t mention it as an issue.
