- Rusty Wallace looked to make NASCAR history with a win in the 1994 Coca Cola 600. Roger Penske won the Indianapolis 500 with Al Unser Jr and looked to become the first car owner to win the Indy 500 and the Coke 600 in the same day. With "Midnight", Rusty's most iconic car, he dominated the first part. However, he would face challenges from some of NASCAR's greatest in Dale Jarrett, Dale Earnhardt, and Jeff Gordon.

last race I attended, man I was 14 then. Never forget this one. I was a Rusty guy too and it stung so damn bad.
One thing that many forget is that there was a tire war that season between Goodyear and Hoosier, and so they ran softer tire compounds at most races, including this one, resulting in a higher wear rate. Plus, the orthodoxy back then was that, with aerodynamics not quite as important as it would become a few years later, Rusty figured to have the upper hand on Jeff Gordon, who ran the last 16 laps on older left side tires and got the lead when Ricky Rudd made a gas-and-go stop with 10 laps left (not to mention the overwhelming advantage Rusty had in experience). Richard Petty even predicted on the TBS broadcast that Rusty would run Gordon down with those four fresh tires, and was only about 1.5 seconds back after the pit stops, but in the last 10-15 laps, Gordon simply outran Rusty and doubled his lead to win by about 3 seconds.

Jeff beat Rusty in '94 because Jeff took 2 tires to Rusty's 4.
Jeff beat Rusty in '97 because he took 2 tires to Rusty's 4.
Jeff beat Rusty in '98 because Jeff took 4 tires to Rusty's 2.
No matter what he did, Rusty couldn't beat Jeff in the 600.

Gordon keep it close enough.,during there last pit stop. where gordon took 2 tires, rusty took 4 tires[ around a 9 swc. difference
Jimmie Johnson won the 2003 Coke 600.
I wish I could have been at this one but I only got to the 600 for the first time in May of 1996.
To be honest, if Jeff Gordon had let Rusty Wallace win the 1994 Coca Cola 600, then Jeff would have never won his first nascar cup race.
I don’t remember Hawk Harrelson calling a NASCAR race. Interesting use of him.
Jeff Gordon would take two tires and Rusty Wallace would take four tires. Rusty didn't know it at the time but that was when things started to trend towards Jeff Gordon and Rusty would not win as many races after 1994. The scene was changing.
