I just found your channel and love your videos, and this interpretation! I've been hoping to hear more baroque composers I haven't yet found. I'm going to try to find this piece myself to play it on my piano :) Great performance!

Just realized you had some spectacular performances on your channel in addition to your educational videos; your exceptional technique and command over the harpsichord is rarely seen nowadays! And the way you utilize small details for ornamentation, rubato, and articulation make the harpsichord sound very musical, what an inspiration!! A question regarding the content: I have seen the term canzone/canzona used before, such as in Purcell’s sonatas for four parts and Frescobaldi’s Canzoni alla francese. I gather from listening to these pieces that this form notates usually just a contrapuntal section, possibly with some general “allegro” material interspersed as well? Do you have more insight into this musical form? And thank you for being such an inspiration in the Early Music community and working so hard!

Thank you so very much for your kind words and for your comment and question!
In general, I believe your discription of canzoni is correct--basically a contrapuntal piece or section. If my memory is correct, however, I believe that in certain time periods the canzona was associated with a particular rhythm--some form of half-note, quarter-note, quarter-note--but I do believe this wasn't true in all eras canzoni were written, and there were, of course, always exceptions anyway. As for the "allegro" material, I'm not sure if that's always the case or not, though I think the genre of "canzona"--which definitely existed in the Renaissance, as well--tends to mostly include music written on the faster side, especially due to its relationship with the rhythm I mentioned (which would have come out of a mensural notation version with likely a breve and two semibreves, and the beat at the breve level [or "alla breve"] at around 50-60 beats per minute--so, rather quick).
      Hope that helps! Thanks, again!

I played the piano as a kid but stopped because it just didn’t interest me. The sound is too soft and bored me. But now watching your videos playing the harpsichord I found that I really want to try my hand at it because the sound is just so phenomenal and exciting! And hearing you play this piece really piqued my interest!

Thank you so much! I found the harpsichord after growing up a pianist and I totally fell in love with the instrument! I'm so glad that my playing has inspired you, and I love this piece and composer (Della Ciaia) so much, too! It's actually the 350th anniversary of his birth this year!

@@harpsichord Your playing totally has inspired me! And after listening to this piece on several videos on CZcams, I think your tempo on 1:52 really had a capturing effect on how dramatic the harpsichord can be and is easily the best interpretation I’ve heard. Della Ciaia would be very proud!
