CLIP DESCRIPTION:
Roy (Richard Dreyfuss) and the local police give chase to the UFOs.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
Steven Spielberg followed Jaws (1975), his first major box-office success, with this epic science fiction adventure about a disparate group of people who attempt to contact alien intelligence. Roy Neary (Richard Dreyfuss) is an electrical lineman who, while sent out on emergency repairs, witnesses an unidentified flying object, and even has a "sunburn" from its bright lights to prove it. Neary's wife and children are at first skeptical, then concerned, and eventually fearful, as Roy refuses to accept a "logical" explanation for what he saw and is prepared to give up his job, his home, and his family to pursue the "truth" about UFOs. Neary's obsession eventually puts him in contact with others who've had close encounters with alien spacecraft, including Jillian (Melinda Dillon), a single mother whose son disappeared during her UFO experience, and Claude Lacombe (celebrated French filmmaker François Truffaut), a French researcher who believes that we can use a musical language to communicate with alien visitors. Lacombe's theory is put to the test when a band of government researchers and underground UFO enthusiasts (including Neary) join for an exchange with alien visitors near Devil's Tower, Wyoming. In 1980, a "Special Edition" was released. While its primary selling point was the addition of scenes inside the alien spaceship, Spielberg claimed that he also cleaned up some choppy editing in the second act.

I really, really miss the days when you could go into a theater and be mesmerized by great acting, great writing, great story telling, great directing, unbelievable for it's time; special effects . .
Just everything: Great.
Now . . It's a lot of work, just trying to stay awake.
I always loved that one little red light, lingering behind the others as if to say, "Wait for me!"
That little red light is not a fictional creation of Spielberg. It's based on actual credible research and reports. For example, in Rendelsham Airforce Base, UK, there was an event with multiple trained military witnesses where they saw those little red orbs and described them as looking like they were dripping fire.
FYI. The little red whoosh is an homage to Walt Disney!!. Its not about incredible research on UFO's. It was intended as a tribute to Snow White and the 7 Dwarfs. Walt always used to have one last Dwarf scamper across the screen LATE!! pulling up his pants. The little red whoosh is the last late dwarf. The punctuation mark.
that was the most realistic one of the bunch
I call him 'Spot'.
Ufo researchers call them Foo fighters.
These UFO still look so good.
Amazing special effects :)
Renato Martins In my opinion the lighting in these ships is better than most modern movies, as they look less glossy and fake
NO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
C.!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
G.!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I. !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
The UFO's are AMAZING!!. The most original approach ever taken. You can see them but you can't QUITE see them. Which give them intrigue and mystery.
And most of the effects were done in a blimp hangar!
Spielberg had some serious ‘inside’ people working with him for this movie, there is a very good chance that these depictions are almost identical to the real ones. That red light has been seen by hundreds or thousands around the world, often near ufo activity. It seems like they’re the same size too... I kinda freaked out when I saw them at first they look so real!
When I was a kid, this scene impressed me so much I actually wrote a short story in my Portuguese class about the LAPD chasing UFOs from LA through the Mojave all the way to Nevada, and my teacher not only recognized the movie scene that inspired me, but praised my Geography knowledge.
just some teen-aged aliens out for a little joy ride.
Minecraft Villager Police: "STOP YOU VIOLATED THE LAW!!!! STOP RIGHT THERE CRIMINAL SCUM!!!" LOL
frankkumon Yeah, just before they find some poor unsuspecting farmer and pop out right in front of them buck naked, and hopping about, making “beep! beep!” noises. Rather childish really.
Points and a towel if you can get what I referenced there.
Maybe their names are Wak & Neek?

R.I.P. Melinda Dillon (1939-2023)🕊
You were an amazing Actress and your legacy will live on in many years to come.
My thoughts and prayers go out to her family, friends and loved ones during this difficult time❤️
I always loved this scene because you get the feeling that the cops ain’t chasing it because it’s their job, but because they get to chase freaking aliens!
Definitely ! They are totally distracted, that's why the one cop loses control of his car
A very intense chase scene here. The special effects were astounding.😳😳😳😳😳😳😳
Which makes me wonder how they were done in 1977?
I never got that feeling.
@@MVR326 And that stuntman broke his back! 😳

This is literally my favorite movie of all time! I kid you not, I've seen this movie over 500 times in my life! This film is just sheer genius and awe inspiring. Whether there is life out there or not, who knows? Either way, it will still be my favorite movie of all time!
Same! Poltergeist and E.T. are up there wi my top fave movies!
Oh yes... You can imagine the impact of the trailer on Finnish TV 1977/78 including this scene to us schoolboys, and narrator shouting 'WE ARE NOT ALONE' :D
You are right, I could watch this movie over and over and not get bored! 🎉🎉
A lot of people know but that's really cool! Love that you enjoy a great piece of art so much
The background art of this scene is soooo good it gives this undescribable feeling
The background is all miniature landscapes on a table top. Photographed in high resolution and front projected on to 100 foot wide screens. The curve of the road with the sign is entirely a miniature scale forced perspective sculpture.
@@roquefortfiles better and more aesthetic than green screen where you can tell they film in a studio easily
@@work90 Trumbull favoured front projection. He brought this technique with him from 2001. He had Greg Jein make huge forced perspective table top landscapes which were photographed then front projected for the back grounds. The one shot i love is the last shot as Neary and the cops all stop and watch as the ships split in three directions. The entire front projection unit was on a crane and does a slight pan up. Thunder and the city lights come back on. Great moment.
Ever considered how the aliens raise the gate even though they’re in flying ships?
They didn’t need the gates up, but the police cars did. They wanted to be followed.
Ned Hesser
1 year ago Supreme Dalek: "You are correct! Instruct all Dalek Patrol ships to pursue those unknown alien craft! Instruct them to as Humans would say "Pull over" or we will make them stop and identify their purpose!!!"
Dalek 1: "I OBEY!!!"
So they could lead the police cruisers off the road?
@@keithwilson6060 Probably.
How many toll booth connect up with other states??? Anybody know???
@Ned Hesser mind blowing if one stops and really thinks about that!
God, I remember my friends piling into my cousin's car in high school and going to see this movie at a theater 25 miles away. We were all TOTALLY blown away. I ended up going to see it at least 3 times.
I love the foreshadowing of the man whistling "Coming Round the Mountain". Some of the lyrics of the song coincide with the events that happen at the end of the movie...
"She'll be coming round the mountain when she comes" (the iconic shot of the mothership appearing from behind Devil's Tower)
"Oh we'll all go out to meet her when she comes" (people from all over the world being drawn to Devil's Tower to meet the aliens)
"We'll all be shoutin' "Halleluja" when she comes" (the priest praying for the travelers as they prepare to board the mothership)
The crazier part is what he said, after the ships come flying down the highway, “They can fly rings around the moon, but we’re years ahead of them on the highway.” As if he knew of their ability and maneuverability on Earth, a comment by Red Spaniard questioned that maybe he had been a former Area 51 employee, but if that was the case, how come they got past the toll w/o paying fare and decided to just fly off the highway once they were in Ohio?
One of the few questions left unanswered for this film. My personal theory, maybe they were getting a feel for the land they were going to be visiting. A place that didn’t try to shoot them down, or think of them as gods. Also, if you saw the previous scenes, it was nice of them to return our toys in nice neat condition.
I never thought of that. Good observation!
"Hey that's Ohio, that's a quarter!"
Nowadays you have to pay like 5 bucks to get into Ohio haha
Norman Bartold is an underrated actor. Westworld and Capricorn One
Back then when it was a quarter
"A toll booth?!! Somebody's gonna have to go back a million light years and get a shitload of dimes!"
that toll both was filmed at the vincent thomas bridge at the port of los angeles.i always remember going through it to go over the bridge.
Good thing they weren't on the New York State Thruway. They'd have to take out a loan.
🤣
We don't need no stinking badges!
Best UFO movie ever!!!
the only ufo movie ever. the rest are Hollywood fictions
When I loved about the movie is that they made aliens look like they were to the best of their ability peaceful explorers. I’m all they did contribute to the break up of a marriage and the kidnapping of a child, but maybe they were not aware of human customs and laws until Roy visited their ship at the end of the movie. It’s all apart of the learning curve isn’t it?
BA F1 I think Spielberg later said after being married that he wouldn't have written Dreyfus' character that way. It's general escapism to portray some hungered direction someone needs to follow in a movie, and individuate it by separating from people who refuse to understand, but your spouse and children aren't something you just dump as a matter of fulfilling a character's direction.
Awesome
@@kilroy987 not much time is spent on it but it is possible to feel his need to fulfill the mystery... Even tho he did leave his fam for now. He did kiss his wife goodbye 😁
Those effects still look good even today, more that 30 years later. As much as I enjoyed Star Wars and Superman and the other fx-filled films of the day, I don't think any film affected me as profoundly as this one.
40 years later they still look almost as good as the effects used today... Spielberg was a genius!!!
Greg St. Pierre, and I'm posting my reply to you 5 years after your original comment, but what you said is still true. Today's CGI still does not fully cut it.
I like the way the camera raised at the end to move focus to the UFOs and make the sky bigger.
What I love about the FX work is how original it all looks. Unlike any big FX movie. A very original approach to the subject matter and the entire film designed around that theme. The way Trumbull made the UFO's from light and lens flares and just the slightest hint of a body. I find that I am always kind of trying to look past the lights to see what is there. You can never quite make out everything and that makes it..."INTERESTING".
The Original Special Effects for CEOTK were filmed in 70mm. That is why they still look damn good today.
Yes. The visual effects are shot in a higher resolution than the live action.
UFOSPACE1999 Imagine got different moments vies would look today if they were made like this?
RIP Melinda Dillion. October 13, 1939 - January 9, 2023. Beautiful, iconic lady.
I still think those things are dangerous, someone could shoot their eye out!
@@mattheweurich33 Well done!
I remember as a kid when this movie came out. The trailer really didn't tell us what it was about. All yiou saw was lights and people looking up. At the time 1977 the special effects just blew my mind even more than Star Wars. The cloud scene near the end when it builds around Devils Tower was amazing for that time.
The trailer is still up on CZcams. It gives a behind the scenes look to demonstrate that CE3K is worth seeing.
One of my favorite movies ever
This moment in 70mm on a huge movie screen is up there with some of the most iconic movie moments in film history. The pregnant pause just before. The calm before the storm. The breath!!. Then the absolutely amazing reveal. No other film maker understands how a moment needs to be presented like Spielberg. This STILL wows me today.
I remember my friends and I stood on line on a very cold December night at age 14 right after this opened. The only seats were within the first 10 rows of the screen, and we still sat apart in groups of 2. After the movie, we met outside the theater , and nobody spoke, we just gave each other blank stares, because we didnt know what the hell had just hit us ! For me, still a landmark of a movie
Mike Rubinate Back when movies were great. A land mark.
Do you remember the price of the movie ticket that night? Was it pricey?
My favourite, for me it's more like a religious experience, the music, the road poster, all of it!
Those farmers whistling on the truck always freaked me out, weird hearing whistling at night
That dudes reaction while he's in the air, lol.
Full Kermit The Frog
I was eleven when I saw this, Dreyfuss was such a kid too.
I first saw this movie when I was 8 back in 2008, and the effects still hold up impressingly
SpacemanDoug One of Spielberg' talents
First time i saw it was new years 1984 and i've been hooked on it ever since...
I saw it in 1977 at age 10, i was scared
@@gaguy1967 i saw it. Quite impressive.
The over all design of this film is amazing. The approach to the UFO's is completely original. All its own.
I like the first UFO "coming around the corner ". It looks like it has a mindless grin .
That little boy was so stinking adorable! I love that “ice cream” line!
It the abduction house scene he keeps saying..."you can come in now".
I like the gong sound they use at the end as the craft fly apart. It adds a wondrous cosmic abyss feeling to the scene.
0:55 I love that little scene where it makes you think the guy in the toll booth is raising the gate, but then it shows him sleeping confirming its not him. Just thought that was pretty clever.
They where charged with DWA. Driving while Alien
LOL!
No animals, actors, actresses, children, or aliens were injured or killed in the filming of this movie!!
No shit sherlock.
Well, except for that cop near the end of this scene. Maybe
Butter, according to some DVD extra material stunt driver Craig Baxley 'broke his legs' doing the car jump. The car went too high off the ground and was not padded up inside. In this day and age they would definitely add a proper roll-cage for this kind of car stunt.
Except all those aliens who exposed themselves in the end died eventually due measles etc.
"They can fly rings around the moon...but were years ahead of them on the highway. I would have loved to have just sat and listened to that old farmers knowledge and his stories ...perhaps he was a former Area 51 employee? The yodeling song at the Ohio toll gate is by Slim Whitman in case your wondering ....Love song of the waterfall.
Former area 51 workers? I'd love to interview them
That "rings around the moon" isn't in the film. How did it end up here?
@@itskevinjustkevin I don't know about area 51, but if you ever make it to Australia, may I suggest you chat to some of the sugar cane farmers in the northern part of Queensland, around the towns of Cardwell and Innisfail, about some of the weird ufo activity they have seen over the years. Most of them are reluctant to discuss it for fear of either being called crazy or liars, but if you find one that is willing to talk about it, boy do they have some stories to tell . .
THANK YOU

I giggled when the UFOs went through the toll booth! XD
The farmer whistling "She'll Be Comin' 'Round the Mountain" is played by the late Roberts Blossom. He would also portray "Old Man" Marley Murphy (Kevin's neighbor who was said to have murdered several people but actually had a falling out with his son) in the 1st "Home Alone" film (1990).
And George LeBay in Christine.
'icecream' 0:10
I only just noticed after years of watching this that when Roy starts up his van the old man is still whistling 🤣
They can fly rings around the moon. But we were years ahead on the highway.
Amazing practical effects!
Iconic UFOs, perhaps the best ever put to film.
The UFOS in this film are amazing. The most original approach I can think of. Allowing the light to define the shape. Then distorted in aerial haze. They kind of tease you that you're seeing more
I was always fascinated by the red orb. No hints as to whether it's a craft like the others or not, whether it's controlled by the craft in front or if it's in control of itself and why it appears as a point of light rather than something more physical like the others.
It's very mysterious which fits well with the film.
it was a pobre
Spielberg likened the red light as Tinkerbell from Pinocchio. Always trying to keep up. Ties in with using “when you wish upon a star” in the soundtrack too. There are a lot of Disney references in the movie. Roy Neary’s wife even called him Jiminy Cricket at one point.
Tail light. In compliance with FAA and vehicle lighting rules at the time.
There have been u.f.o. reports and videos of lights like these that can separate and reconnect while flying in the sky.
The red ball was a tribute to Disney's the three dwarfs there was always the last late dwarf pulling up his pants. He was the punctuation mark. that's what the red whoosh is.
Those ships have Doug Trumbull written all over them. That light... Remember the opening of Blade Runner? Beauty.
Inspired by the Speur / Neff UFO Chase in 1966.
shivers, everytime i watch it
"Teasers are usually rich kids with nothing to do. They cruise around looking for planets that haven't made interstellar contact yet and buzz them, meaning that they find some isolated spot with very few people around, then land right by some poor unsuspecting soul whom no one's going to believe and then strut up and down in front of him wearing silly antennas on their head and making beep beep noises." - Ford Prefect, HHGTTG
Fantastic movie, one of the best scenes ever. This movie is better than star wars.
One of the best sci movies ever love it❤

Damn aliens flexing on us with their Sagittarius-G6x’s like that! 👌😤
Always believed these could perhaps be other world's 'drones' and not necessarily the beings themselves traveling, just keeping an eye on things and/or making evaluations but then again anything goes with that technology...ha, Merry Noel Krimble cromS!
From Navy pilots descriptions of their aerial maneuvers I believe they must be "unmanned" and remotely piloted, like drones. The g-forces involved would kill anything flesh and blood, even aliens
must try the find that movie, because it's a masterpiece movie.
As a kid, I never heard the line "they can fly rings around the moon, but we're years ahead of them on the highway.".
They took this chase from the incident from my hometown where these cops were chasing a ufo and drove off the side of the road trying to chase it
This film Cinematography is really beautiful, Its got that View Master touch.
The little one following them is always a laugh.
It's just like the cops to want and try and pull them over & ticket them for speeding. 😂

When I watched this movie in the cinema I needed to sit on my suitcase because it was so crowded,Once the movie finished Everyone just silently stared at the screen.
And nothing but that 5-tone melody haunting their sleep for several weeks...
Agreed. I was 7 when I first saw it and it blew me away so much I got a fever after watching it.
Always an engaging watch, just like searching for UFOs.

He's all in.... He then proceeds to drive off a small cliff, mesmerized.
Some movies carry iconic scenes.....the "coming 'round the mountain" spaceships scene is legend.
It's 2023 and the special effects in this scene was 1977. and it STILL stands the test of time.
That music bit just after the first cop car goes over the edge...when Neary's truck and the other cop cars stop at the edge...sounds identical to the scene in *The Lost World: Jurassic Park* right after Sarah is attacked by the Stegosauruses and one of them impales the log she's hiding in. It's right when Eddie says, "They're leaving. I, uh...I think they're leaving." It sounds identical to me. Anyone else?
Yes it does sound very similar it reminded me of Oliver Stones JFK film also scored by “THE MAESTRO” John Williams some of the sequences score is very similar too certain scenes in Jurassic Park too

The toll booth p[art always cracks me up as there isn't a toll road anywhere near Muncie. You'd have to go up into Steuben Co to get the toll road and the only toll booth on the state line is the one just over into Ohio near the Edon exit...
Stunning to see the power gets back over all the city after the UFOs disappear into the clouds.
I would never try to shoot down any UFO's/alien spacecrafts if they were not acting hostile.
Crushed on Melinda Dillion. Loved her in this and "Christmas Story" too. She was the perfect mom. R.I.P.

This part always got me seeing the UFOs and Police chasing them! They go pass McDonalds!
"yeah but we're years ahead of them on the highways."
Loved it when Lil Red trolled the toll plaza by flicking on the lights
Beautiful film making
One of best scenes I've seen, in any film 🎥 technical wizardry, up there
The UFO's are about 2 feet across shot in smoke. They don't move. The camera moves. There are about 6 different exposures made for all the lights on it. Some in smoke some without smoke. The roadway is a set built in a hangar. The background terrain is a table top miniature photograph and was front projected on a 100 foot wide screen. The UFO's are composited into the shot half a year later. The continuation of the road with the billboard is actually a table top miniature
Hey that's Ohio that's a Quarter. 🤣🤣🤣🤣
Amazing scene, seen in France, at Marseilles, in 1978.
If you pause it at 1:20, the clock in the background on the tollbooth wall,..are the clock numbers backwards, or is it twenty after 7 at night because at 2:03, the police dispatcher says "Time check, 3;40...or close to it. Just wondering if was an error in the movie with the time of night, as I thought this was supposed to be happening in the wee hours of early morning.
Special effects hold up beautifully. I think they’re the ones used in Blade Runner.
Just amazing 👏 how this was crafted? Who knows ...movie magic ...just enjoy ...what's life without some mysteries
The final scenes where the spaceship actually lands WAS filmed in a huge airplane hangar.

Something great and big is going to happen on planet Earth, and earthlings are becoming participants of the grand event by various means, and across various nations and geographical locations. This theme is what makes CE3K so epic as a film.
