More than 300 islands make up the archipelago of Fiji, a small nation in the South Pacific with a population estimated to be just under 1 million. The majority of these incidents took place near the largest of Fiji's main island, Viti Levu, with encounters happening in the past 2 centuries. The ocean surrounding these islands just eleven hundred nautical miles away from New Zealand are so rife with sharks, in fact, that locals have turned them into an industry! The opportunity to dive with sharks in Fiji is one of the most popular tourist attractions of the nation.
The country of Mexico is a popular tourist destination, with dozens of scenic beaches located along Baja California, bordering the Gulf of Mexico, and lining the Pacific Ocean. Around 35 million people visit this nation yearly, often flooding their shores for a relaxing getaway. But such heavy, habitual traffic to beaches can eventually attract the attention of some of the most vicious predators in the ocean. Throughout the 2000s, many surfers and swimmers had risky run-ins with bull sharks, tiger sharks, and even hammerheads.
The Caribbean country of the Bahama Islands has had its fair share of sharks. Up until the 1980s, sharks seemed to occur here rarely according to data, however it is possible many more went unreported. At least 36 incidents have been reported from the island nation since 2001
The largest nation in South America is the 3.2 million-square-mile country of Brazil. The city of Recife, located in the northeastern region of Brazil, has been a particularly common sight for these treacherous incidents, with around 56 occurring near its beaches in the past 2 decades. The reason for the high activity in this part of Brazil owes to a deep trench that runs parallel to Recife's beaches as sharks will use it as a migratory route, often rising up to the shallows to hunt.

Why did I know it was going to be the USA at #1. I don't swim in the water in Florida, Cali or Hawaii unless it's a damn pool lmao.

Yep, once and it was so terrifying!
I was on a trip with my grandparents to the Bahamas when i was either 12 or 13 (so around '94/'95?). It was a cruise ship vaca but we stopped in a couple places in the Bahamas, one that had a place called "Gilligan's Lagoon" i believe? Anyway it was like a little cove that was surrounded by rock walls with an opening at the one end that led out into the Atlantic.
Me & my cousin was swimming around, along with a couple dozen others when i guess i swam into what I'd call a small riptide or current, where no matter how hard i swam i would literally just stay in the same spot. If i treaded water the current would start taking me towards the opening.
Sorry about the long story here, but basically as i got caught in it my cousin started swimming back towards shore trying to hail the lifeguards or anybody who could help. As i got tired and started treading water i focused on the screams from others on shore & in the water but couldn't make out what they were saying. Eventually i ended up looking down (the water was like literal glass it was so clear) and saw that, at best guess, maybe 15 feet below me was some type of shark swimming in a small circle around me! It looked to be around 4-5 feet in length, grayish color, but i have no clue what species it may have been. It didn't matter as i was terrified either way lol.
I wish there was some super cool ending to this story that i could tell you guys, but no, it ended a minute later as i was picked up by a lifeguard in a canoe.
Still, it was one of the most craziest, scariest moments of my life and ever since then I've never gone more than knee-deep into any ocean, and even then i get a little scared 😂

24 fatalities in New Zealand? It's 13 from early 1800s to present.

Data on the internet is a tricky thing. One shark site lists 24 with specific dates and case details but other sources do give slightly different numbers
