Hi! Having recently done a project on rendering 4D objects in unity (probs also the reason this was recommended) I have a small remark. The visualisation you mostly use of the hypercube is the perspective projection (also called frustum projection, similar to orthogonal projection - not too important). This "squashes" a 4D object into 3D, much like how a shadow is a 2D "squashed" 3D object. It makes a lot more sense to think of it using the cross sectional projection, which is essentially what you do with your 2D example - you take a cross section where w=0 (the normal 3D world) and translate the object through this cross section. Let me know if you want further reading, I got a few good sources and yt videos
@@PixelZYX That's true - but you're forgetting time! By manipulating a 3D object in a 2D plane, you can change how long that line would be. A 2D creature would see the line changing in size. The creature could develop some sense of intuition for the object, and thus kind of understand it.

@@xei2694When people say time is a dimension, they are not referring to a spacial dimension, they are referring to spacetime in the theory of relativity. Because in space, time is dependent on the observer. In physics, people consider time to be 4th dimension of space time, as in another way to measure objects.. It doesn’t refer to the spacial dimensions, 1D, 2D, etc.
Time isn’t the fourth dimension for a fourth dimensional being, time is a fourth dimension for us. You need and z,y, and z to describe an object in space but you also need time to describe when it was in space.
But seriously time is really weird, there is no time use to it without objects evolving. If nothing ever moved, there is no time, but everything else still exists.

Humanity can only access 3D, since the object we see from our naked eyes is 180 degrees. A 4-dimensional being can access and see the whole 360 degrees angle, which we can not comprehend. Maybe 4th dimension is gravity, maybe it's time, only a higher dimensiom being knows.
I feel like since we are beings in a third dimension, our laws of physics only work in our 3D world which is why the grandfather paradox works. However, since we are not fourth dimensional beings, we do not know what the laws of physics are in the fourth dimension. It is possible that the grandfather paradox is invalid to those living in the fourth dimension for some reason we cannot understand because we are in a 3D world. I'd like to believe there are a near infinite number of dimensions and each dimension can experience the dimension above theirs but cannot manipulate it. For example, 4th dimensional beings are effected by the 5th dimension but are unable to control it much like we experience time but cannot control it.
That doesnt make sense. Physics are the same in all 3 dimensions, so why would the fourth dimension be any different? And for gods sake, time isnt the 4th dimension, since it is completely different from the other 3 dimensions. @@Kooczsi I think it makes sense. After all, it is what I believe. You mentioned that physics is the same in all three dimensions. How does this work? I understand that laws of physics build on each other as you move up through dimensions (i.e 1st to 3rd), but not as you move down (3rd to 1st). There is no depth in a 1D or 2D world so how would the same physics in a 3D world apply to the physics in a 1D world? Also, what is your definition of time? Time is simply a tool to help us better understand that there is a passage of something. If we are passing through time (or in this case something), aren't we technically moving? We have no control over the flow of time but we do have examples of massive objects being able to have an effect on it (time dilation). Hypothetically, if you had a time machine and wanted to travel to a specific point in space time, wouldn't you also need the time coordinate? You would need four coordinates. Your X position, your Y position, your Z position, and your W position (W = Time). I am going to ignore XYZ assuming we already understand how these work and focus on the W. Say you wanted to travel 1000 years to the past at a specific point on Earth. Oh no! you forgot to put in the W coordinate and it remained unchanged relative to your current time. You would just teleport to the XYZ coordinate you put in. If your calculations were correct, you should be at the very spot you wanted to be at. However, you would just be floating in space at the coordinates that Earth was 1000 years prior. The last bit might have been a bit confusing but the whole point is that time is spatial. If time travel were real, time would be an essential coordinate. Without it, you'd be at the right place at the wrong time. The fourth dimension is always a fun topic to debate so I'd like to hear your thoughts. We will probably never come to a conclusion in our lifetimes, but it is fun to ponder what it could be.
i like your curiosity, id argue we actually are 4 dimensional beings, since we can be described by 3 spatial coordinates and a time coordinate (and since the number of dimensions is just the number of independent coordinates we are 4 dimensional (plus the fourth dimension can be considered as time which im adding since theres a popular misconception (wow theres a lot of stuff here))). anyways by the way in general relativity there are solutions allowing for closed timelike curves (just the fancy word for time travel), but just because its a solution to the field equations doesnt mean its viable for reality, whats also interesting is that if these systems were possible, the grandfather paradox could be ignored since reality could have a principle where you couldn't possibly change anything in the past allowing for there to be no contradictions (the probability of you changing something in the past would be zero), this is called novikov's self consistency principle if youre interested , its funny people have thought about these goofy scenarios
Fun fact Although you can't physically place yourself in the fourth dimension, it's possible to get a grasp of what it's potentially like. There is this rule in physics, which is that each spatial dimension's perception is one dimension lower than the dimension a POV lives in. For example, we see in 2d. You might think you see in 3d, but every single frame of sight you have is a plain, 2-dimensional image. You never see in full 3d, which is what 4d beings would see if they were to exist. A fun way to think about this is by taking a dice, and looking at its frontside with one eye. Then, look at the backside now with the other eye. It is most likely, that a 4-dimensional being would see all of the faces of the dice collapsed into each other. This also goes for time, since time may or may not be a spatial dimension. While we see only a single instance of time per reference, 4-dimensional beings may see several timelines at the same time, which they would also potentially travel between. One final thought experiment. Grab a sheet of paper (2d) and poke a pencil (3d) through it. While we are able to see that the pencil has been poked through the sheet of paper via depth, the 2d beings on this sheet would only see a hole in their reality, no other information given. This is why some physicists believe that black holes may be effects of a 4-dimensional phenomenon.

I think Time still works as the fourth dimension. Any 4D entity would just have to be immortal. Not only does our 3D universe look like a 2D image to them, but they could also pick when they're looking at too. Meanwhile we're unable to skip ahead or go back in time. Just like a line is stuck on a piece of paper.

WH40K lore probably does 4th dimensional time interactions better. In WH40K there are Gods of Chaos who exist in a realm of chaos known as "The Warp". You may think of The Warp as Hell, but it's a dimension that mirrors ours and exists in non-linear time. This means that the Chaos Gods have simultaneously always existed and never existed. As the lore goes, once they began to exist they had then always existed, so they do exist and always have existed. Some people in WH surrender themselves to chaos for additional abilties. One of gods, Nurgle (the Chaos God of change, life and growth. Change through pestilence), in particular seems to bestow some of his followers with visions ahead of time. There's an episode of a series called "Hammer and Bolter" which shows this affect off very well. I this episode, the Followers of Nurgle invade an Imperium Cathedral, but they get inside because in the future they had _already_ been inside, and so their future selves left plague bombs for their past selves to activate and kill whoever was inside and also rot the door mechanism so they could break it. They were able to break in cos their future selves had already done it. It's really fucky, but it makes sense in context. Be careful though cos WH40K is fucking grimdark. A lot of this stuff is too brutal for normal people

this is pretty long but it explains it to you guys, like this comment so everyone can see it. Look, 4D shapes are possible because of position / time, wherever you go around the 4D object, you would see it changing, for example you go on the west side of a 4D object and you see a normal shape, and if you go on the east side sometimes you would see another shape. The most complicated shape of the 4th Dimension is a sphere, here he explains how 2 3D cubes inside of each other would create a 4D shape, and you would need a W axis which is perpendicular to all of the other axis's, so if you would need a 4D sphere with a W axis it would be the same of a Black Hole. A black hole is theoretically a 4D object, there are theories that say if you fall into a black hole, you would be sent to another dimension, a black hole can bend light and space itself. Wherever you go around a black hole you would see something different, light itself crossing each other / the photons inside of each other. Any being from a dimension can not understand or see any other being or object from a higher dimension, he showed how a 2D being sees a 3D being as a constantly changing flat surface, because the 2nd Dimension does not have depth.
If time is 2D, and you move back in time and alter it, then there is no paradox. The moment you try to alter the past, it means you just move in the 2D-vector of time that has a slightly transformed 4th dimension, aka slightly different path of history.

I don’t understand why everyone thinks time is the fourth dimension, it’s not even a dimension, time is just a concept we created to describe changings, if everything were still, there would be no time. My train of thoughts is that a 2D being would perceive a 3D being as a line (1D) and we (3D beings) would perceive a 4D being as a plain 3D object, only if these higher dimensional beings were moving we would see strange stuff: for the 2D being perceiving the 3D being would be the line stretching in and out from nowhere and for us perceiving a 4D being would be like seeing someone or something teleporting from one place to another. So in my opinion time just helps us perceive higher dimensions and there is no connection with higher dimensional beings being able to control it.

Time is temporal and width, length, height are spacial dimensions. When listing the dimensions in order the spacial, and hyperspacial are listed first before the temporal (time). When ppl talk about 4 dimensional creatures they are assuming these 4 dimensions are spacial compared to us 3 dimensional spacial creatures. So just how we would be living in a 4 dimensional world with time being the 4th dimension, 4 dimensional creatures would be living in a 5 dimensional world with time being the 5th dimension (seeing how we like to count the spacial dimensions first then the temporal (time) ones.

Hi! Having recently done a project on rendering 4D objects in unity (probs also the reason this was recommended) I have a small remark. The visualisation you mostly use of the hypercube is the perspective projection (also called frustum projection, similar to orthogonal projection - not too important). This "squashes" a 4D object into 3D, much like how a shadow is a 2D "squashed" 3D object.
It makes a lot more sense to think of it using the cross sectional projection, which is essentially what you do with your 2D example - you take a cross section where w=0 (the normal 3D world) and translate the object through this cross section.

@@PixelZYX That's true - but you're forgetting time! By manipulating a 3D object in a 2D plane, you can change how long that line would be. A 2D creature would see the line changing in size. The creature could develop some sense of intuition for the object, and thus kind of understand it.

@@xei2694When people say time is a dimension, they are not referring to a spacial dimension, they are referring to spacetime in the theory of relativity. Because in space, time is dependent on the observer. In physics, people consider time to be 4th dimension of space time, as in another way to measure objects.. It doesn’t refer to the spacial dimensions, 1D, 2D, etc.

Well I don't really know much about it, but from what I've learned and from what it seems to me, I can understand why some would say time is the fourth dimension, but I agree on the fact that this fourth dimension is a time dimension, with the three other being space dimension, as the time is a linear a a line on a one dimension space

I feel like since we are beings in a third dimension, our laws of physics only work in our 3D world which is why the grandfather paradox works.
However, since we are not fourth dimensional beings, we do not know what the laws of physics are in the fourth dimension. It is possible that the grandfather paradox is invalid to those living in the fourth dimension for some reason we cannot understand because we are in a 3D world.
I'd like to believe there are a near infinite number of dimensions and each dimension can experience the dimension above theirs but cannot manipulate it. For example, 4th dimensional beings are effected by the 5th dimension but are unable to control it much like we experience time but cannot control it.

You mentioned that physics is the same in all three dimensions. How does this work? I understand that laws of physics build on each other as you move up through dimensions (i.e 1st to 3rd), but not as you move down (3rd to 1st). There is no depth in a 1D or 2D world so how would the same physics in a 3D world apply to the physics in a 1D world?
Also, what is your definition of time? Time is simply a tool to help us better understand that there is a passage of something. If we are passing through time (or in this case something), aren't we technically moving? We have no control over the flow of time but we do have examples of massive objects being able to have an effect on it (time dilation).
Hypothetically, if you had a time machine and wanted to travel to a specific point in space time, wouldn't you also need the time coordinate? You would need four coordinates. Your X position, your Y position, your Z position, and your W position (W = Time). I am going to ignore XYZ assuming we already understand how these work and focus on the W. Say you wanted to travel 1000 years to the past at a specific point on Earth. Oh no! you forgot to put in the W coordinate and it remained unchanged relative to your current time. You would just teleport to the XYZ coordinate you put in. If your calculations were correct, you should be at the very spot you wanted to be at. However, you would just be floating in space at the coordinates that Earth was 1000 years prior.
The last bit might have been a bit confusing but the whole point is that time is spatial. If time travel were real, time would be an essential coordinate. Without it, you'd be at the right place at the wrong time.
The fourth dimension is always a fun topic to debate so I'd like to hear your thoughts. We will probably never come to a conclusion in our lifetimes, but it is fun to ponder what it could be.

i like your curiosity, id argue we actually are 4 dimensional beings, since we can be described by 3 spatial coordinates and a time coordinate (and since the number of dimensions is just the number of independent coordinates we are 4 dimensional (plus the fourth dimension can be considered as time which im adding since theres a popular misconception (wow theres a lot of stuff here))).
anyways by the way in general relativity there are solutions allowing for closed timelike curves (just the fancy word for time travel), but just because its a solution to the field equations doesnt mean its viable for reality,
whats also interesting is that if these systems were possible, the grandfather paradox could be ignored since reality could have a principle where you couldn't possibly change anything in the past allowing for there to be no contradictions (the probability of you changing something in the past would be zero), this is called novikov's self consistency principle if youre interested , its funny people have thought about these goofy scenarios
Fun fact
Although you can't physically place yourself in the fourth dimension, it's possible to get a grasp of what it's potentially like. There is this rule in physics, which is that each spatial dimension's perception is one dimension lower than the dimension a POV lives in.
For example, we see in 2d. You might think you see in 3d, but every single frame of sight you have is a plain, 2-dimensional image. You never see in full 3d, which is what 4d beings would see if they were to exist.
A fun way to think about this is by taking a dice, and looking at its frontside with one eye. Then, look at the backside now with the other eye. It is most likely, that a 4-dimensional being would see all of the faces of the dice collapsed into each other.
This also goes for time, since time may or may not be a spatial dimension. While we see only a single instance of time per reference, 4-dimensional beings may see several timelines at the same time, which they would also potentially travel between.
One final thought experiment. Grab a sheet of paper (2d) and poke a pencil (3d) through it. While we are able to see that the pencil has been poked through the sheet of paper via depth, the 2d beings on this sheet would only see a hole in their reality, no other information given. This is why some physicists believe that black holes may be effects of a 4-dimensional phenomenon.

There is a lot of arguing in the comments so to clarify: we kind of live in 3 dimensions, we have the normal 3 and time. Time Is also a dimension of space we just don't perceive it as such because we are constantly being forced through it in one direction and our brains are not made to think about it any other way.

WH40K lore probably does 4th dimensional time interactions better. In WH40K there are Gods of Chaos who exist in a realm of chaos known as "The Warp". You may think of The Warp as Hell, but it's a dimension that mirrors ours and exists in non-linear time. This means that the Chaos Gods have simultaneously always existed and never existed. As the lore goes, once they began to exist they had then always existed, so they do exist and always have existed.
Some people in WH surrender themselves to chaos for additional abilties. One of gods, Nurgle (the Chaos God of change, life and growth. Change through pestilence), in particular seems to bestow some of his followers with visions ahead of time. There's an episode of a series called "Hammer and Bolter" which shows this affect off very well. I this episode, the Followers of Nurgle invade an Imperium Cathedral, but they get inside because in the future they had _already_ been inside, and so their future selves left plague bombs for their past selves to activate and kill whoever was inside and also rot the door mechanism so they could break it. They were able to break in cos their future selves had already done it. It's really fucky, but it makes sense in context. Be careful though cos WH40K is fucking grimdark. A lot of this stuff is too brutal for normal people

this is pretty long but it explains it to you guys, like this comment so everyone can see it.
Look, 4D shapes are possible because of position / time, wherever you go around the 4D object, you would see it changing, for example you go on the west side of a 4D object and you see a normal shape, and if you go on the east side sometimes you would see another shape. The most complicated shape of the 4th Dimension is a sphere, here he explains how 2 3D cubes inside of each other would create a 4D shape, and you would need a W axis which is perpendicular to all of the other axis's, so if you would need a 4D sphere with a W axis it would be the same of a Black Hole. A black hole is theoretically a 4D object, there are theories that say if you fall into a black hole, you would be sent to another dimension, a black hole can bend light and space itself. Wherever you go around a black hole you would see something different, light itself crossing each other / the photons inside of each other. Any being from a dimension can not understand or see any other being or object from a higher dimension, he showed how a 2D being sees a 3D being as a constantly changing flat surface, because the 2nd Dimension does not have depth.

If time is 2D, and you move back in time and alter it, then there is no paradox. The moment you try to alter the past, it means you just move in the 2D-vector of time that has a slightly transformed 4th dimension, aka slightly different path of history.

I don’t understand why everyone thinks time is the fourth dimension, it’s not even a dimension, time is just a concept we created to describe changings, if everything were still, there would be no time.
My train of thoughts is that a 2D being would perceive a 3D being as a line (1D) and we (3D beings) would perceive a 4D being as a plain 3D object, only if these higher dimensional beings were moving we would see strange stuff: for the 2D being perceiving the 3D being would be the line stretching in and out from nowhere and for us perceiving a 4D being would be like seeing someone or something teleporting from one place to another.
So in my opinion time just helps us perceive higher dimensions and there is no connection with higher dimensional beings being able to control it.

Maybe is how we think about time the problem, we use "time" to be able to perceive a change of the reality we see:
Object is (present and maybe future) - object changed (the object how it was before now is past and the object that now is changed is present and maybe the future) but this happen so fast, it happens in the same moment as it became all three, pratically past, present and future all exist in the same moment thus we can say that exist only present in the universe as past and future are abstract (exist in memories and as thoughts) or the "time" that we perceive doesnt go forward neither backward, all happen in the same present and that means that time does not exist, if this is the case, beings that can live in 4 dimension does not need other matter or creation to change in order to be able to move, in practice they dont care if we move or not (what we perceive as time, if it stops then we stops) they are able to do, to move and to think outside "time" influence hence being practically immortal as they can manipulate not when but how to be: maybe they cant go backwards "our" time but theirs yes, so is like i coud decide to just get older or get younger manipulating the influence that time have on me, I can go back my form and my time, that would explain why I cant go back to when my dad was born, because I control myself in time, not the others, so I could even decide to not flow with time and pratically you would never know that because from my perspective if I do such things i would see the other just standing still and because you cannot control time, for you if I stay for a year without letting my time go and then let go you would not notice because I resume time when I blocked it, but you cant because you dont know how to do nor how it works, im not manipulating your time to block you, simply you dont know yet how to escape time boundaries, neither of us know for now how it really works, this is my theory

Time is temporal and width, length, height are spacial dimensions. When listing the dimensions in order the spacial, and hyperspacial are listed first before the temporal (time). When ppl talk about 4 dimensional creatures they are assuming these 4 dimensions are spacial compared to us 3 dimensional spacial creatures. So just how we would be living in a 4 dimensional world with time being the 4th dimension, 4 dimensional creatures would be living in a 5 dimensional world with time being the 5th dimension (seeing how we like to count the spacial dimensions first then the temporal (time) ones.
