M60 Main Battle Tank - L3 Destroyer M60A3

  • The M60A3 is one hell of a tank and we all know the classic and historically iconic M60 series of tanks. But did you know that the tank is still to this day being updated with new upgrades? Well in this video I go over some of the new features that the next generation of M60 tanks have and how it is able to fulfill its next combat role commitment with some help from L3 communications.
L3 will soon offer an upgrade package for the venerable M60A3 main battle tank, to "mitigate the obsolescence" (sic) of aging M60s around the world and keep them somewhat still relevant in a modern battlefield.
    improvements include:
    -A 120mm cannon
    -A 1200hp engine
-Better turret and cannon electronics (drives, optics, FCS, gunner controls)
    -Turret slat armor
Doesn't look like there are more interesting offerings (ERA or applique armor, for example), since I guess SLEP is primarily meant to be a dirt-cheap update for nations who still use the M60 but can't afford more extravagant technological step-ups or making the jump to more modern platforms.
Let me know your thoughts and opinions on it!:-)
    Hope you enjoy!

spent 4 years as a tanker, started on M60A1, then in '77' or Battalion got all new M60A3s. great tank , comfortable to live in and operate for long periods in the field. Stationed in Germany , we even had a factory next door that made M60's, (Mainz, Ger.) great place for parts , if you knew some of the workers and bartered well, I lived off post and had several workers as neighbors in my building... scored 8 working heaters for M60's for 3 gal.'s of Jim Beam, best deal I ever made.

I was an M60 A1 Tank Crewman in the eighties. I loved that Tank !! The man speaking says the newer version has stabilization but so did the A1. I have never seen one that didn't. I had two MOS and was in the Marines for 4 year's. I went to Tank school at Fort Knox in the late fall of 1984 or 1985. Stab was on all of the Tanks then. It made for a safer firing at target's because you didn't have to sit still to get it done. Doing so makes you a target. It use to be harder to hit your target if it was moving unlike now day's. I love seeing what they are doing with this package. I would feel much safer in the M60 A1 now and would go to war in one if needed. I don't know how many the US still has but we could still fix them up and use them in the military rather than sinking billions into new Abrams Tanks.

120MM ammunition for the M256/L44 main guns uses combustable case ammunition. The casings are apart of the propellant and burn with it, leaving a stub base at the end which drops to the floor. Biggest problem you have here with this open ammunition compartment outside of its potential to incinerate the crew if hit by an RPG or something, Is also the threat of ignition from a flare back. Which is why we're not allowed to "Lap load" with the 120mm ammo. If you have a flare back from the breach, which happens often, you could ignite that ammo and kill everyone inside. In a standard tank gunnery you can clog the bore evacuator ports which will cause that burning propellant to flare back into the turret.
I've had it happen plenty of times. It's pretty goddamn scary.

Secondary autocannons for MBTs tends to be ineffective since it was found that crews would use the main gun for any targets that an autocannon would be used for (even when given the option of having an autocannon). Any targets that would warrant an autocannon to be used would end up getting hit by the main gun anyway (which was what actually would have happened, hence why autocannons aren't commonplace on modern MBTs).

Clearly they would get outclasses on a large scale, but it reminds me of strategy games where you have a tier 1 vehicle that can still hold off or threaten a tier 2 enemy force if you utilize them well, or have your own tier 2 stuff. Just imagine, that 120mm cannon is as deadly as anyone elses, so you have the same killing power. The enemy can't ignore you, so you still have a viable impact on the field.

I always felt having open exposed ammo in the turret & hull was bad enough, but add the fact that of no composite armor or ERA, that tank really was a deathtrap to us tankers back then.
The Soviets had been using composite armor in their turrets & hulls since the T-64. It's no secret why the Iranians lost so many M60A1's (as well as training)to the Iraqi T72M's, composite armor. Their 125mm sabot rounds went right through the turrets of the M60A1, & into exposed ammo everywhere inside, with nothing but rolled homogeneous steel turret armor. Very sad for the Iranian tankers.

    • @mississippirebel1409
      @mississippirebel1409 Před 7 lety +25

There are several reasons why US and other western tanks are taller and bigger than Russian. First off, the US takes crew comfort into consideration when building a tank. Crew comfort means better crews. When the M60 was design, it was made to be more of a defensive tank and used in a hull down positions, that helps with situational awareness. Also, Russian tanks only have 3 crew members, whereas US tanks have 4, so it needs to have more room. Another advantage to having a taller tank is that it has really good gun depression, which is important because it helps get into a hull down position and can use that gun depression to fight on hills and other rough terrain. Russian tanks are very cramped and have little to no gun depression. They can really only fight on even/flat ground. Their crews are very uncomfortable and aren't able to fight as long as crews in US built tanks, or at the very least they won't be as effective because they will be tire and uncomfortable. IF you have never been one,, then you will know what i'm talking about. Lastly, having 4 crew members help spread the work load out, especially when it comes to maintaince or fixing a track. And having an extra crew member helps with situational awareness.

So, I have the dubious distinction of being one of the last men to crew an M60 in the US Army! Really, its not a bad tank. I'd still fight it, even today. With this package, I believe it would be able to stand tall on the modern battlefield in all areas except armor protection. But even that, I believe, could be made adequate, if the customer were so inclined. So, yeah, if I was the Brazilian defense minister, this would be an option that I would look long and hard at.

The M60 continues to soldier on, and by all means, it was our first line of defense for a while, but the reality is that this thing was originally designed to out do the T-55, and every single upgrade it was playing catch up to the T-64, T-72, and T-80. Tanks that have their own flaws, by all means, nothing is perfect, but better tanks, and in decent number too.
Can you imagine being in an M60A3 and going up against T-80s? Composite armor and barrel fired ATGMs? Better hope you have some M1s by your side. Even they're in for a fight.
I like the M60, and it's got a special place in my heart. I love its aesthetic and I love its ruggedness, but this design was pushing its limitations in 1980. It's 2018 (2016 at the time of this video's recording). It's day has come and gone.

in my opinion, the countries which cannot afford a modern MBT are the same countries which are very very unlikely to need to fight high-tech wars, but rather chronic wars of attrition against enemies who likely also don't have cutting-edge armies.
In plain text, wars in these countries have a different set of priorities. government of a poor country needs it's tanks to be first and foremost survivable, reliable, simple and cheap to operate and repair. speed isn't an issue, nor is fire power. cheapness, reliability and simplicity are hugely important for a poor country facing chronic war. and these are the kind of countries which have M-60 (unless of course they don't have the legendary T-55).

Yes, We had the "stab", or the stabilisation guntube platform on most later M60A1's ( Rise & Rise/Passives)& all M60A3's, but it only kept the guntube rather steady, & close to on target, for firing on the move. Didn't mean you couldn't miss the target however, lol. We kept the stab on whenever we were down range, that way as you're driving off the range with the stab locked, your gun stayed pointed up & down range all the way back to the staging area, to offload your expended ammo canisters & 7.62/.50 cal casings. Then it was off to the de-breifing tent.

In reality, an upgraded M60 like this one is probably more capable than Russia's T-72B or T-80U. The only downside to the M60 is it doesn't have the armor to really stop a tank round from penetrating it, but neither do the T-72 or T-80. I'm sure they could put reactive armor on the M60 to help against ATMs, but is going to have little effect on stopping a sabot round. This is why the Abrams and Challenger 2 are so tough to knock out or penetrate because they have the best armor in the world and use depleted uranium along with composite armor. The Abrams and Challenger 2 are pretty much invulnerable to tank rounds frontally, while the Abrams M829 depleted uranium sabot round will slice threw any Russian tank like a hot knife threw butter. The Leopard 2 doesn't use depleted uranium round but instead uses a less effective tungsten round, which is less dense and doesn't have the penetrating power that the M829 has against armor.

There are many types of M60 tank upgrades. General Dynamics Land Systems even tested an M60 2000 which had an M1 turret mounted on a M60 chassis. The latter gives the tank the highest level of protection w the M1 turret. Forces which have stocks of the M60 would do well to consider the speed & lethality of the battlefield & plan accordingly.
