  • In this rant, I talk about why I don't watch much Linux CZcams content. I talk about three categories of CZcamsrs that I especially take issue with, and how these kinds of CZcamsrs are completely missing the mark with their coverage of Linux.

Just wanted to point something out about Linus Tech Tips.
I think it's misleading to call that channel a Linux channel, and then bash them for not supporting FOSS. Because they aren't a Linux youtube channel. They're a tech tips channel (it's right there in the name), and, I would say, for the most part, a PC gaming channel. So of course they're not going to support FOSS. Because when a Linux video does make it into their uploads, it's not about promoting Linux and the FOSS movement, it's about gaming on Linux, and what about the experience has gotten better since X amount of time ago when they made their last video on the subject. Nothing about gaming has to do with FOSS. So why should a channel about gaming support it?
Now if you aren't interested in gaming, I can see why you wouldn't be interested in that channel. But you shouldn't say you aren't interested in it because it's a bad Linux channel, you should say you aren't interested because it isn't a Linux channel at all.

I wouldn't let my mum use Linux, I wouldn't tell a programmer to use windows, and I wouldn't tell a gamer to buy a Mac. Suffice to say, Windows has a lot of faults, Apple has a lot of faults, Linux has a lot of faults, but they also all have their up sides too. I put the lite version on there because it is so old, I didn't even try putting core on; however it most likely would have worked alright I am thinking. • @michaelheimbrand5424
      @michaelheimbrand5424 Před 3 lety +8

@@yahallo4423 I know what you mean, and I couldn't take it. I may get some hate now but I think that the Linux world is slowly converting to some SJW-kind of Microsoft. Can't explain better in English (I'm Swedish). But somewhere during the "trying to like-period" of Linux, I re-discovered OpenBSD. Of course I WM/DE-hopped the hell out of it and was frustrated about the lack of GUI-wifi widgets. But it took the least amount I ever seen to learning to use it. It takes just a tiny re-calibration of yourself and boom, you cannot understand how someone would use the broken mess that everybody else stand for. The most important bit I learned when converting to OBSD is that if it lacks something you "need", the lack is by a very good reason. If soething is good, it finds it's way in to OpenBSD sooner or later. If it's not good, you better learn to step avay. So today I only use as much as possible from base and try to stick with minimalistic "add-ons" and as little bloat as possible. So Firefox, Avahi and PcManFm and dbus is there. Otherwise I try to stick to TCL/Tk and Motif-apps. And never forget that video Derek did about sudo vs. doas. That's what it's all about. And the crasy thing is that OpenBSD still is the most easy thing to get up and running there is. I NEVER has to fiddle with all the junk that's always a must in other OS'es or distros. Use the correct hardware, throw bad apps ou of your life, pkg_add the stuff you need, do some syspatch now and then, edit some dead simple config-files for your needs, and enjoy your trouble free digital life. If it crashes, statistically it's a hardware problem. At last, when writing something like this, there is always that one guy that has to point out "well where's your bla bla-app/driver/function then?". Don't be that guy. If you're running Linux, you know all about it already. Where's your Photoshop, Matlab or iCloud? The simple thing is that what I wanted when I started with Linux is gone (with the exception of maybe Slackware). To go from Linux to OpenBSD has a similar feeling from decades ago when I switched from Mac and Win to the early versions of Mandrake, Redhat and Slackware. The best thing about OpenBSD is that it seem to stay true to their philosophies. And at last, someone may be tempted to try FreeBSD for some fuzzyness. Don't do it. I don't know what's the matter with it but I have never gotten it to work properly. You have to tinker with it so much so it's a mess before you even got basic power management to (sort of) work. So to you all out there who has grown tired of all bloat, crap, drama and bugs. Just do it. Go OpenBSD. Put your rubbish closed source hardware in the bin and learn to live without your childplay apps, and just do it. The things you were looking for in Linux is not there anymore. Take an old mans advice and install something proper.

I think this is a bit misleading to say that you don't watch Linux content creators, when what you're saying is that you are only interested in FLOSS content, which may include Linux, but FLOSS content approaches the subject from the more philosophical/political standpoint. From this side, Linux is more of a side topic rather than a main focus of the channel.
Some of those other channels that you talked about, on the other hand, comes from the tech side. They aren't that much into the philosophical/political background of why people creates Linux and other free and open source software, but just looking into Linux as a tech tool. From what I can see, people who are non-positional are likely because they're covering Linux from this purely technical standpoint.
Personally, I have no problems with either types of content creators. You just have to know whether you're looking for Linux educational content or FLOSS advocacy, these are two very different content types, even though they may sometimes share certain topics. Most content creators have varying degrees of mix between educational and advocacy content.
Some content creators aren't interested in FLOSS advocacy, or they don't want it to be the focus of their channel, and that's fine. Not all Linux related contents need to be advocacy.

    Hey DT!
I love free and open source software. I think it's affordable and great for both trust and educational value and is a great contribution to the world, and I fully support using such software and promoting it.
What I don't understand is why you hate proprietary software. I've seen you address the question but you seem to always avoid answering it. Is it because you distrust any software where you or others can't verify exactly what it's doing? Or is it something else?
I hope to contribute to open source software at some point, but I'm a full time professional software developer. During the day, I get paid to work on proprietary software, as do countless other software developers around the world, to develop products that people can use. At the end of the day, even free and open source software runs on proprietary hardware. The inner workings of your CPU are a black box.
So in short, I fully understand and support the free and open software movement, but why are you against proprietary software? What's fundamentally wrong with it in your opinion? And why are you opposed to other CZcamsrs who both like Linux and are also okay with proprietary software?
    Love all your videos, peace!

You should watch just one Richard Stallman lecture.. I don't think his philosophy is necessarily realistic for the world to put into practice, but he is one of those people that draws a hard line about something very fundamental, and though while he will seem crazy to people, he will, in the process of being extremely consistent in his ideology, make some very important points about the dangers of giving up certain rights, even if this ideology is not necessarily practicable for the whole world. If you want to make sense of the overall distaste for proprietary software you really should just watch one of his talks and even if you don't agree with all of it, I think you will find that there is some value in his perspective on why it is important to at least ensure that you have alternatives and that you don't just give up control of your devices and information to corporations and governments and licenses etc.

I wish DT would be more open about it since simply hearing "proprietary garbage" over and over doesn't exactly tell me why I should care.
I watched a few of Richard Stallman's lectures (though they're essentially rehashes of each other haha) and I finally get it! It's very fascinating and I understand why some would view running "secret code" to be potentially malicious. I certainly feel the same way whenever I download and run new software. In the end, I'm not likely to give up all proprietary software (especially since that would mean giving up my smartphone completely!) but this is certainly something I'll be keeping an eye out for wherever possible. I agree that it's not completely realistic.

I assume you still don't get it. Companies like Microsoft, Apple, who have created or creating proprietary softwares along with the OS gets a tons of money when they sell on the market. However, there's no benefit on our end, and most relevant reason is that they also sell our data. Well most of.
Closed-source/proprietary software often comes with "extra" stuff which may or may not be affiliated with other companies and you may or may not want to opt out them. Closed-source software main definition should be "we don't share our product source code, because we fear, anyone can copy our piece of software and can make another one. We also fear, someone else can find vulnerabilities to break our reputation". And this is absolutely ridiculous thought. Open-source means to be "this piece of software can be access by anyone, know how a stuff work on a certain criteria, and even modify to get your desired or own application."
      And there the issue comes.
Most of proprietary software control our hands and doesn't give us full-control to do what we really want. And most importantly 97% of proprietary software in today's era doesn't care about our privacy, they literally sell our data. DT, want to express about this.
This also doesn't means that I hate proprietary software/environment. However, if they truly does what they should be without doing anything worse, then I don't think there's really we need to tell the word "dislike".

I partially agree with what you said in this video. However, I do have a counterargument arguing as to why these channels should continue to exist and be watched.
Every one of these types of channels has a place in the Linux/Unix/Darwin community. Those who speak about the technical and productive benefits of these operating systems only, in addition to reviewing entire distributions and more general topics, appeal to new users and those thinking of switching. They help newbies to decide their level of involvement and whether or not they wish to switch, when these people would normally not even be thinking about the FOSS community.
Those who do not take sides at any costs, instead opting to explain everything in depth, appeal to users with small amounts of experience in computers, who need unbiased reviews and tutorials. Some users actually do have compelling reasons to choose proprietary software as well as their open-source equivalents, and need to know which choice is best for them.
Finally, provocateurs act as countermeasures against arguments generally accepted by most people, allowing users to know why they might not make certain choices. Their videos provide compelling concerns about topics no one else argues against. Users with higher experience with computers could be attracted to some of this content, due to the fact that they posses the expertise to be able to look critically at every aspect of their device.
Sure, this content can be annoying to someone who is set in their ways, but for someone who is starting out, or is still building their opinion and their workflow, or wishes to know what they are sacrificing and could gain from an alternative, these channels can be invaluable. At least, these channels are invaluable when done well; I have nothing to argue for those who create subpar content.

    3) Tutorial - topic focused. One line at a time instructions typed in a on screen editor. No person or voice present in video. Almost always has a LOUD music soundtrack.
    4) Video has an English title but that is it. Content ends up being in French, German, Russian, Tamil, Hindi, Romanian, Arabic, Urdu or some other language an English speaking user would not be expected to know.
A hard to describe [content wise] other category exists. These are almost always done in a very live [echo] room with poor mic usage. I've worked [well] with many people from non English speaking countries over the years. So don't judge. I use headphones and have half an eardrum on one side. Add to that age onset deafness (I'm over 65) and 40 years as a rock & roll musician. In total this make these people unintelligible. Sadly too is it is the category that has 99% of the Linux ladies.

Not all of us use Linux are advocates for 'open source' or 'internet privacy' or 'freedom'. Subscribing to a specific ideology is just not a prerequisite for using, promiting or developing Linux.

Because it goes both ways. If there was no Netscape corporation, there would be no Firefox. If there was no Sun StarOffice there would be no OpenOffice/LibreOffice in the form they are. I would even say without Apple the internet would be less democratic and closed standards like Adobe Flash and Microsoft ActiveX would have prevailed. Of course you can argue that open source is basically a free farm for corporation but in the same way you could argue that Capitalism is basically accepted slavery where workers are thinking they are all doing on their will. I agree that you don't need to promote anything to use it but if you make content it helps.

I always find it funny from the outside looking in seeing a CZcamsr who spends a lot of time educating others seeing people making content and being upset about how uneducated or dissatisfying they are. The “fence rider” might actually not care what anyone uses, because if one thing was objectively better, most people would probably use that thing. And why bother yourself over it? There’s going to be people calling you a shill or pretty much anything no matter what. Doesn’t mean it makes sense or you should pay attention to them. I get that someone trying to make everyone happy will make nobody happy, but maybe they simply don’t have a horse in the race, and that’s fine if they still have good informative content. That’s not to say that you shouldn’t point out the great uses for and champion Linux, but there’s no need to be combative about it. It’s just an odd paradox to me. Have you ever tried to reach out to these folks that you’ve put into boxes? So, yeah, in the sense that a lot of people are talking when they could be coding, this rant is totally right. But it's also okay, if you want to cash in on your code, as most of the 1st Gen of Linuxers has done by now, that's cool too, and helps in its way to support Linux, so ... um... bring your axe. :)

I could not agree with the first point more. If we put too much work in getting companies like Adobe to release their proprietary garbage for Linux, then we are no better off than we were in the 1990s. Even if Windows 10 dies and Microsoft as a company shuts down, technology will still suck so long as customers allow big companies to walk over them like doormats. And I think that's why many, many people have such a hard time switching to Linux, because they don't vote with their wallets and will continue to buy garbage from vendors no matter how badly these companies like Adobe treat them. This is what I think needs to stop.

Despite the fact that you seem to make this association, I heavily disagree that Linux is all about FOSS. I think you're conflating your views about free software and Linux's mere existence as (one of?) the most popular piece(s) of FOSS.
The biggest part of Linux instances running out there are run by corporations with closed source proprietary builds running on servers on Azure Cloud. Core Linux developers are mostly on big tech companies' payroll, and those corporations don't give a crap about FOSS.
The amount of money made on the shoulders of FOSS vs. what gets contributed back is ridiculously low. It's just not about the philosophy.
