Born in Glasgow, Knox became the youngest journalist for a Glasgow newspaper at age 16. He went on to report on crime, on motoring, and to become a news editor.
He began writing crime novels in the 1950s. Knox often wrote under pseudonyms, frequently for the American market. These included Michael Kirk, Robert MacLeod and Noah Webster. He published over 50 crime novels, including several series, notably the "Thane and Moss" books.
In the 1970s, he was approached by Scottish Television to present a series asking for public assistance in solving crimes in the central Scotland area. Knox presented the fifteen-minute slot for over ten years, always signing off with the promise that any calls to the police "can be in confidence". At this time he also made a series of short programmes called Tales of Crime, also for STV, in which he recounted famous Scottish criminal cases.
His crime novels from the 1960s onwards, and in the 1970s his Crimedesk television series, publicised the Glasgow slang term "neds", referring to petty criminals or small-time hoodlums. A 1982 analysis of crime fiction discussing Knox's 1977 novel Pilot Error noted his description of Strathclyde Police as being unconcerned about "neds" getting hurt in a fight as long as no one else was affected.
His final novel, The Lazarus Widow, was unfinished at the time of his death, and was completed by Martin Edwards.
Saturday Night Theatre was a long-running radio drama strand on BBC Radio 4. The strand showcased feature-length, middle-brow single plays on Saturday evenings for more than 50 years, having been launched in April 1943. The plays featured in the strand included stage plays, book adaptations and original dramatisations. For most of its history, programmes ran for 90 minutes and were largely entertainment-centred, such as thrillers, comedies and mysteries.

With so much rubbish on the tv and radio nowdays its realy good to find somthing worth while to listen to these audio dramas a point in qeustion. download as many as I can.
Great little drama, vintage BBC I cant get enough of these
Great play oh isn't Google brilliant, this play first aired Saturday 18th January 1964!! The Google site sent me to the BBC Home Service which then gave me a heavenly list of hundreds of these shows but who needs the BBC when this great site has a plethora of fantastic dramas!!
'but who needs the BBC' you say.
You must be an idiot. Who's going to make the next generation of quality radio plays?
@@michaelbedford8017 sorry Michael what i meant was who needs the Beeb as an index but The BBC make and made total quality programmes that will outlive us all!!
Bill Knox used to present "Crimedesk" on STV,he always referred to the criminals as "Neds"(non-educated delinquents)
My favourite parts were the comedic chase scenes music. Folled by the overdone cornering car screeches. Loved this. Great entertainment. Tyvm
Good grief. Thank you for posting these. They are fantastic.
Thoroughly enjoyes this. Bill Henderson was my brother's teacher at Belmont Academy in the 70s. Prior to Take the High Rd Fame. His wife was Head Teacher at Kincaidston Primary Ayr, in the 90s. A small 🌎
Thank you for uploading this play I enjoyed it .
Other Bill Knox radio dramas include: " The Tallyman " " A Taste Of Proof " and " Draw Batons " , They are all as smoothly written as this one. And all three are available via Chesterton Radio.
I’m addicted! Thank you 🙏🏾
Great entertainment. I did have a smile when I heard the special effects towards the end... out of Hollywood ( no spoilers from me lol) thanks for finding this.
Two thumbs up.
Iremember the books--so glad to find this. Thank you.
Just great! I remember watching Bill Knox on STV in the 70s. Seems like yesterday. Can see his grey hair and glasses yet. This was a very enjoyable story. Probably im biased in favour of Bill Knox, but being from Ayrshire and a regular visitor to Glasgow, I enjoyed listening to 'my own tongue '
Enjoyed this play very much, thank you for all your time and effort in bringing these wonderful plays to us. Also, I found the biography of William Knox very interesting, thank you for the extra effort. 😁💕💕
Great radio play. Quite intriguing with good performances, very entertaining. Thank you very much.
Bravo !
Thank you for your time 👍👍
Enjoyed this exciting play very much. Thanks for uploading 👍
Really enjoyed this play, thank-you xx
Very enjoyable - thanks for posting.
What about a brief synopsis rather than Wikipedia on the author. People can look that up for themselves if they are interested
Even just the broadcast date would be nice.
A great romp. The musical score contained some classic chase sequences which added to the tension with a little help from sound effects. The story was far-fetched in some respects. Who actually eats off Gold Plate?? And melting down Gold that is about 25-50 microns thick is going to require very large amounts of Plate.
Nevertheless thanks for uploading 👍👍👍
No......1 of today 8[26]21
Another great story from so long ago.......
Well, to mister Chesterton and Company :
As always after I play,. I must stop and take the time,
to show my appreciation once again........
Well with that said, I guess I will leave you to it. I positively know that we will meet again, in the future, in another aisle,
in another grand old theater like this one. Just maybe next time I will take my girl and I and go sit in the balcony to watch the play.
In this theater you can see,
the stage so much better from the balcony.
Go check it out before you leave
cheers chesterton....... ...... ..
This took me back, used to listen to radio plays with my mum, happy days 😀, the music was the best😊
'In fact as a taxpayer I demand it!' Ha ha, good luck with that. As a taxpayer you have no rights except one: you have the right to pay and pay and pay....
👏🇬🇧
only interesting thing about this is the title
Well first time this story not good over the top the readers
???!!!!?
???!!!!? Me too. 😂
Zzz
Ok - the guy is serving life for murder and ends up on a minimum security facility?
I don't think so😁
You would be surprised it is common practice for life sentence prisoners to spend their final years of sentence in an open prison so as to enable them to rehabilitate more effectively on release.
In Britain today anything is possible. It's a miracle he wasn't
just given Community Service. !
And an Anger Management Course.
@@tango6nf477 but this guy had only been in for five years.
No synopsis required
The anti-Irish narrative is strong in this one.
Ok, the dad takes the blame for the murder to save his son. Then his other kids set out to kill their brother in revenge. That seems pointless since it won't bring their dad back, and many parents would give their own life to save their child's. The guy went to his death happy in the knowledge his son would live on. Why would his other children want to undo that?
No probs for me, I've heard it twice before; for others it's a 'spoiler'.
Are you a troll, or just brainless?
Let me guess you have very few friends and a mother complex?
Spoiler alerts!
