  • Shooting when defenses go under is the most important PnR read. Being a shooting threat forces your defender to chase over top which leads to that 5v4 situation every playmaker loves.

Are you doing a pick and roll video series now? This channel is awesome!

Thank you very much. Yup some pick and roll videos definitely on the way. Not gonna be a formal series like the off arm though - making so many videos in a row on the same topic got me pretty worn out to be honest.

Is there a way you can still score without shooting behind the screen?

      1) Get your screener to set the screen lower, flatter and/or slip it early. This will make the defender unable to go under the screen. Communicate to your screeners exactly where and how you want your screens to be. Work on your communication skills and that team chemistry.
      2) You can drive vs under - but the spacing isn't great. Your defender who went under will meet you in the paint - and the screeners defender is there as well. I'm not the biggest fan of this read - but it can work for really quick players. Also if your screener is a good popper it can put the dropping defender in a tough situation - whether to help or close out to the pop.
Watch Schroder, Rondo, Teague, Westbrook, Rondo, TJ McConnell. Defenders regularly go under vs them.
      3) You can also get a re-screen which is harder to go under. European teams flow into this vs every under. But your defender can still go under or switch on that 2nd screen. I'm personally more of a fan of option 1) - because it's quicker. The other 3 help defenders can really lock in because the screen + rescreen takes time.
But being able to shoot vs under will make your game so much easier. Get your man chasing over - get that 5v4 situation and playmake!

At the very end you say that forcing the defender to go over the screen opens everything up. I'll look through your video library, but do you have a video showcasing the various options and how they play out when the defender goes over the screen? If not, a video on that linked to this one would be incredibly valuable!
