  • Cormorants occur worldwide and we are fortunate to have three species here in the Pacific Northwest: Double-crested, Brandt's and Pelagic. Combine cormorants found around the world, and one sees even more variation to this plan. There are 42 species in all, ranging in size from the Great Cormorant to the smallest, the Little Cormorant. They share a common ancestry and many similar anatomical modifications, but each of them has its own way of life.
Dennis Paulson grew up in Miami, exposed to nature in all its glory while southern Florida was still largely unspoiled. He received his Ph.D. in Zoology from the University of Miami with study of dragonflies, and shortly thereafter moved to Seattle where he has lived ever since. Dennis' impact on the birding community is broad: he was one of the Founders of the Washington Ornithological Society (1988) and he conceived of and taught Seattle Audubon's "Master Birder" program from its inception (also in 1988). For 15 years, he served as Director of the Slater Museum of Natural History, University of Puget Sound, where he continues to work regularly.
Dennis has traveled on all the continents to observe and photograph birds, and is a world-recognized dragonfly expert. He is an enthusiastic nature photographer, and has published over 100 scientific papers and a dozen books, mostly on his favorite animals. One of Dennis' primary goals as a biologist has been to blend the science of biology with the study and appreciation of nature, and he enjoys nothing better than the teaching and sharing of that combination.
Dennis presented this talk at the Monthly Meeting of the Washington Ornithological Society, "in person" at the UW Center for Urban Horticulture as well as "virtually" via Zoom, on May 6, 2024.
