There will always be tragedy as long as babies are raced. Horses should not even begin to be trained until the age of three. They are not fully mature until 4 or 5.

I remember that race where Barbaro broke his hind leg, and even though they operated the leg poor Barbaro had to be put down. It was a very sad day, and a terrible loss. I was in tears watching the race on TV, and it truly broke my heart seeing that poor horse 🐴 suffering through so much. It was a good choice to put Barbaro out his misery, and pain. R. I. P. Barbaro. ( A true champion). 😢😢

Wasn't he cared for at a vet hospital (Pennsylvania's New Bolton Center)for many months after that race? I remember sending him a card. I think he was euthanized like 8 months later. Great job all those people did caring for him. Very sad/

I followed Barbaro for most of his career. His Derby win was incredible. I was devastated by his injury in the Preakness. I followed his treatment at the New Bolton Center closely and was heartbroken when he lost his fight. RIP Barbaro, you were loved by many. We will never know what could have been...

I'm glad nowadays they can treat stuff like this in animals much better to where they get a full recovery in about 6 months to a year.
I only wish they could've done something for not only Barbaro, but also all the other racehorses like Ruffian who had to be put down because they were deteriorating or just ended up dying from their injuries.

So true. I am sad to watch this about Barbaro and glad they did everything they could to save him, but I am even sadder about how those who are not champions are quickly removed and turned into pet food. The horse industry is a cruel one and I will never support it. If horse-racing is to continue, they should come up with rules that every single horse, whether they are champions or not, should get to enjoy a good life till the day they die.

unfortunately there still aren't a lot of options for horses that injure one leg severely enough that they can't weight bear on it. horses weren't designed to carry their weight on 3 legs, and those 3 healthy legs will eventually break down if the horse continues to compensate for the one bad leg. there isn't a lot that vets can do to solve the extra load the 3 good legs have to carry.

Barbaro was pretty lightly raced. The Preakness was his 7th career start.
Breakdowns seem to have increased in recent decades, since the 1970's. But horses, the top ones at least, are running much less frequently than they did in the 1970's. Of the top 2-year-old colts of the 1970's, Secretariat, Affirmed, and Spectacular Bid had 9 starts at 2; Alydar had 10. Seattle Slew was the lowest, at just 3 races at age 2. Ruffian had 5 starts at 2, in a season cut short by injury. Hall of Famer Susan's Girl, who ran during the 70's, had 13 starts at 2.
Barbaro had 2 at age 2.

These are race horses, they will run their heart out either on the pasture or on the track. If the horse doesn’t want to run, you can’t move all that massiveness. Its not a dog. The owner will either keep/sell it off as a pet if the horse doesn’t run. They want to run. When race horses retire they get depressed, so sometimes they become lead ponies. Lead ponies give comfort and calm down race horses as they walk out onto the field. The crowd for a new horse can be overwhelming or just the stepping out into the field can get a horse overly excited to race. So the lead horse helps calm them down. Besides ppl that help train, groom, ride these horses don’t make a lot of money. Most of them do it bc they love the horses. Yes they make money but they are treated very well - baths, spa time, acupuncture, they are treated better than most pets. By saying they are “slaughtered” is not appropriate. The horse is doing what is in its nature and that is to run to its heart’s content. Some horses need interaction, want to run - these horses are not meant to be stowed away in a barn, standing still or pacing waiting for you to ride when you feel like it.
