- Join Marie as she explores vegan street food options in the popular Korean shopping district, Myeong-dong! Because the concept of veganism is not common in Korea, it isn't a given that there will always be a vegan option. But luckily, there are a lot of traditional Korean street foods that are naturally vegan and some other foods can be altered to be suitable.

DISCLAIMER: This tour is based on Marie's experience over the last year living in Korea as a vegan. We tried to be as thorough as possible in our explanations but in the end, it is up to you to decide what is appropriate for you. Cooking practices vary from vendor to vendor, ingredients can change, and cross-contamination can occur especially when items are cooked near non-vegan items.
Also, a slight update about a product we mentioned. Almond Breeze is actually a vegan option. We would like to clarify that Almond Breeze currently available in Korea and other markets around the globe is suitable for vegans and vegetarians and does not contain any animal products, by-products or derivatives. Please visit www.bluediamond.com/faqs to find out more.

Thank you SO much for this video Marie (and Cory)! I'm a vegan and I'm going to Korea soon, so this was super helpful :) it would be great if you could make more videos relating to veganism in the future!
I think the point made about most Korean street foods seeming a bit unhealthy is true. From the MAAAANY tours I've seen, most use lots of cheeses, meats, oils, sugars, and starches (all delicious, don't get me wrong!) I am glad though to see there are still options for vegans and vegetarians that look JUST as good! I need to try that strawberry/red bean/mochi concoction now! 😍😍😜
Nevaeh Wright lsh
i think the point if street food is supposed to be bad for u, like a treat like fair food etc :D
street foods anywhere in the world is usually not healthy
but korean food is actually healthier thats how their obesity rates are super low
gimbap, tteobokki ,gimingbap are super healthy street foods as well
even the ppumkin soup with red beans that she bought in this vid is healthy
omg ur korean is so good
Mochi is Japanese word, Korean word is Chapsal-Ttoek. Most rice cakes are made from sweet rice and Koreans called sweet rice "Chap-sal"
The thing about "faux-fur" not really being faux is only something that I discovered recently. I've always been faithful that furs that I buy are fake, given that they are labeled "faux", but if it's from China or somewhere in Asia, it is most likely to be angora fur. I tend to give it a feel first, if it feels soft and silky, it's real.
Great video. I'm vegan since 3 years now ^^
the video is so helpful because these days it s so hard to find vegan food in the street , especially korea :). i hope y guys make a video about vegan food in hongdae as well. And it s realy nice if y can list vegan restaurants in both blog and youtube.
반갑습니다. 안녕
I'm not vegan nor vegetarian but I find this video very informative, great job. Could you do a video about Korean food that is gluten free? I noticed there are more people everyday that are gluten sensitive or had celiac disease. Thanks.
I'm Korean but I'm learning a lot of things from your video! Love it thank you
Wonderful wonderful video. The Korean phrases are super useful and the video quality is a-ma-zing! I'm not vegan but it's really handy for me as a Muslim. Thank you once again! 👍
great info....and i'm waiting for other info about vegan food on another place in Seoul😉
Wow! I am impressed with all the food options and you did such an excellent job describing them all! You made me hungry! Thanks for the video :)
This is great! I'm no vegan but I've been waiting for a video on this. Would be interesting to see if I can get some of these locally.
This was great. I've never had a ginkgo nut before!
Awesome detailed and informative video!! Enjoyed every second of it!
Great video, well made!
Great video! Just organising our trip to Seoul next year and this will be great help! Thanks!
Wow! Everything looked delicious, would love to try those mochi strawberries! Thanks for another terrific video!
Thank you very much for this video!!! super informative!!!!
Wow this was a very informative video! Great to see that vegans can enjoy Korea too! It seems that the locals are very nice to you since you took the effort to learn the language.
Wow what an interesting video! Love it! Thanks for making it :)
Thanks for this video. Very informative for the people who are vegan. I can listen to Marie all day explain anything lol
Great job! I wish I could have some of the pumpkin porridge,I really enjoyed this video keep them coming.
It's really good to see how positive you stay! nice video! :)
Thanks so much, this was very informative
You're welcome!!! ^^
Very informative, well filmed and clear video. I'll bet anyone who is vegan will love all the great information. I like the way the street vendors interact with you. Well done - very professional!
Thanks this was such a great video
great video. really well shot
Cory & Marie 코리 & 마리 I was definitely going to say the same thing, great shots and editing.
Great work
Great video! Marie, (and Cory) you did a fantastic job here...very professional, helpful, and informative. I so admire how well you speak the language. You speak so much better than I do, and I find that I"m learning phrases from you in your videos. I'm not vegan but my daughter is vegetarian, so I want to know what options she has when we visit in May. I also like the coverage of the vegan restaurants that you did in your other videos. Thanks so much!
LLOL YES at the end she explained being vegetarian or vegan in korea with the simple phrase "it's a pain in the ass asking what everything has"
This is so helpful!! Thank you :)
Thank you for making this video!! :) I'm a new resident to Busan and i'm trying to look for options to eat out!
OMG I love you guys for making this informative video! I'm coming for study abroad and I want to be able to try Korean dishes and street food instead of drooling at friends eating. Please make more videos perhaps things I can order in restaurants thank you so much!
really cool video
Very interesting video!
I loved this! Marie, you're such a good presenter! My, I really want to be in Korea right now :(
Thank you a bunch for this vid! :D
Great video! Would love to visit Korea and I'm planning on becoming a vegan next year so this video was fab! Super informative but also really interesting! Made me hungry!!!
I will subscribe! I have been searching for a video just like this as I will be an international student in Korea without a kitchen in my dorm. 감사합니다 😊 I look forward to more helpful vegan content 🍴
this is super helpful bc i want to visit korea bc that's where all the rest of my fam lives but i'm scared about not having anything to eat. thank you!
this was a good one.
Thank you, this is so helpful!
Omfg I love this video! Thanks💕
You're welcome!
thank you for this video! ^^ I'm vegan and going to seoul this april, I'm really excited!!;; hoping to see more vegan in korea videos from you~~
This was very helpful. i am going to Korea in March 2017 and being a vegetarian i was wondering if i would be able to try any korean street food. this video helped out a lot! thank you so much. Subscribed
This video is recommended to me after 4 years
im so happy to see the pair of u back in action.... i look forward to more videos in the future.
one thing i would like to ask though is that im coming back to Korea in april-may this year with my parents... my dad is seriously allergic to Horseradish/wasabi... now in korea there are so many herbs and such, is there anything i can say to check if simething is related to the horseradish family or if food we are about to eat will contain horseradish?
Great video.
Wow, the narrator’s Korean is so good 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
Your Korean is amazing!!!!!
Nice! I really would like to visit South Korea and try the vegan food...I didn't like the fur stuff...It seems so cheap as you mention, this shouldn't be :( I hope one day things will change for animals. Thanks for the video guys! Still love following your adventures and also your lunch/dinner times: food looks amazing.
that same mochi in hong kong is serve chilled!!! so its ice cream pop and its so delicious!!!
5000 won for that quantity..In india street food is in range of 350 to 2000 won
Yeah. Myeong-dong has expensive street food, more than anywhere else in Korea, mainly because of all the tourists there.
Great info for us vegan virgins! Love myeongdong.
wow theese foods looks so healthy! you wouldn't expect that is East Asia, I only ate at the vegan vegatarian restraunrants in Seoul, going there again and going to save some more bucks with this street food thanks to this video should of watched it before I went, but will save this in playlist so I can find this, especially in winter when its like -25!
I'm nearly at the end of my quarantine and I'm looking forward to exploring Seoul as a vegan. 👍🌱
Hi Cory, I would like to request if you can share the behind the scene footage of your vlog work. Your videos are very vibrant in colors and sharpness. What camera do you use and what application use for editing. This clip is very HD and it is amazingly clear, crisp to the minute detail.
Thank you for this video. My wife and I are planning a trip to Seoul next year to visit her family, and I've been really concerned about the availability of vegan foods.
Wow watching u speaking korean so effortlessly. How u learnt korean language?n thanks for sharing this vegan stuff n teach how to get food in korean language as im vegan in this new land.👍✌😀
Love to see that vegan options are available globally. I'll have to take a trip soon 😎
Excellent
Thanks again for this video. I just have a small comment, one of my friends living in Japan said to me that mostly pink mochi pastes are made with the additive E120 (a red pigment produced with cochineal) in order to have this pink color. So, maybe it's the same in Korea.
This is actually the best vegan Korean video I've seen
brilliant
Thank you!
Thanks for sharing this with us. This is the first time when i see that there really exists alot of vegan options in street food in Korea. Btw, is tteokboki vegan ? Tnx for sharing 💖
Glad you enjoyed the video. ^^
There are vegan options, but you need to be smart about where and what you're buying.
Tteokbokki isn't vegan because 99% of the time, the vendor will put anchovy broth or some other broth involving animal byproduct in it to the spicy sauce. Fish cakes and hard boiled eggs are common solid food items found in the tteokbokki sauce as well.
So please be cautious if you are vegan but want to eat tteokbokki street food in Korea.
Hey, please visit Nepal. its a awesome location for veg food. try it as your next content😀
Last time I was in Korea was in 1989 and they didn’t apologize for bumping into you either!
Lots of eggs in Korean food; so glad you’re asking.
Thank you Marie and Cory for this useful video!
Thanks to you, I think I won't fall into some traps and I won't starve when I visit South Korea. ^^ (I say that because when I have visited Japan, I was too afraid to eat non-vegan foods that I didn't ate much. I only ate one or two banana a day and drunk a lot of water ^^')
I looooovvvveee pumpkin porridge!!!
The roasted chestnut is popular in china. Very similar.
For some reason I blew at my screen, when you were showing the Ginko nuts.
wow this helped vegan alot
Seeing that fur scarfs made me really sad :( 💔💔💔
Thanks for the tour c:
Hi, guys! Thanks for another informative video. Marie, how long have you been a vegan and do you plan to be one for the rest of your life? I thought I saw several videos where you were eating meat...so I'm assuming this is relatively new for you? What made you decide to turn vegan? And does it make it hard that your husband is not? I'm sorry if any of this was covered in previous videos.
Hi Marie! I've been to hara donuts (모리도너츠) in Myeong-dong and heard the donuts are vegan. Could you check and see if it's true? Great video by the way, very informative!
9:28 whoa that's surely surprising 😶 I wonder why real fur costs less than artificial one.. Thank you for the vegan/vegetarian food tour all that food was appetizing 💕💕 hopefully the vegan/vegetarian food market will bloom in South Korea
I visit Korea after some weeks i hope see you bro
Vegan is very healthy and happy. I have been vegan for 50 years. I have not seen a doctor at all. I hope that foreign friends will come to Taiwan to eat vegan. I wish you vegan health and happiness. Any wish and good wish can be achieved.
woaah nice
Thank you so much! I was afraid I would have to stick to plain rice all the days of my trip because I didn't speak Korean
Just do a Google search for vegan food in Seoul. You'll find videos from other vlogger friends of mine, as well as all the new restaurants and cafes that are vegan-friendly and have popped up in the last year. The options now are much better than just 1 year ago!
Thank you so much! You're so kind!
I really love too try Korean food , but as a Muslim i think eat vegan is real help for us because we can avoid any animal oil or something related .. thank you for this video , it's not easy task to ask what kind ingredients in that food . Good job 👍
actually most Korean traditionall pancakes have eggs :( and normal Gimbab(the seaweed riceroll) have eggs and ham as well. So you need to ask
Thank you Marie for mentioning Almond Breeze as a vegan option. We would like to clarify our Almond Breeze drinks currently available in Korea are four flavors-original, unsweetened, banana and chocolate. They are sold at Olive Young, convenience stores, major supermarkets and also at local e-commerce sites. We assure you the four flavors are animal product free. Please visit our frequently asked question page at www.bluediamond.com/faqs to find out more.
When the mungbean pancake is being grilled i noticed they used oil. I wonder what kind of oil do koreans use? Is it Vegetable oil? Because in Japan they often use lard (pork fat oil?) to fry, sautee, grill and for seasoning so it is not vegan..
seeing how much fur jackets are popular there is so sad great video btw
Loved the quality of this video!! I'll be in Korea in Feb 7-21 hopefully we can catch up :)
Aww her face cute lol
When I was in Korea in November, I saw a ton of the nut and corn vendors (mostly in Busan) but was too paranoid about it being not vegan to try it. For next time, now I know. Overall, I cooked a lot while I was there because Happy Cow let me down a lot with the wrong addresses and also since Google maps doesn't work that well out there. Gotta prepare better for next time.
I have been told it It is
almond breeze is vegan, the vitamin a palmitate is of the synthesized form, rather than animal derived form.
Cory & Marie 코리 & 마리 ahhh I see, what is the animal derivatives in Korean type specifically? is it the palmitate or something else? I'd think Diamond Blue would insist it is all vegan derived, their website says such in USA, does it say otherwise in South Korea?
I think it's pretty hard to be vegetarian/vegan in Korea ? :/ Thank you for this video !
It can be challenging to be a vegan in Korea, but more and more vegan products and companies are sprouting up every month. Being a vegetarian is fairly easy, though. Thanks for watching!
I'm not sure if bindaeddeok would always be vegan. I've seen recipes with egg as a binder and kimchi which can have seafood in it
Hey, great video! Are you vegan? That's really interesting, I've always wanted to know how it would be living vegan in Korea :)
Hi PK. This is Cory, I'm not vegan, but Marie is, which is why she hosted this video.
Veganism has been growing a lot in Korea in the last 2 years, there are now so many vegan-friendly cafes and restaurants in Seoul compared to just 1 year ago. There's also the annual Seoul Vegan Festival, you can see a video of it on my channel if you look back far enough.
I don't live in Korea anymore, but Marie is still there hosting plant-based events for those looking to be vegan in Korea. You can see her videos about that on her channel at: czcams.com/users/nothingbycoincidence
I did a vegan diet in Jeju in 2008 for 6 months it was easy peasy :) try going to Buddhist temple restaurants - they're vegan. they have tons of different mushrooms and seaweed species to try cooking :)
This is the 37th time and I barely noticed the dolphin in the beginning
You are so cute🤗😊
how did she say “can i have one order”
i’m familiar with 하나 만 주세요
is that basically the same thing?
It's hard to hear but I think she said 주시겠어요 instead of 주세요.
주시겠어요 is more casual than 주시겠습니까
하나 만 주세요 = Only one order, please.
하나 만 주시겠어요 = Will/Can you give me only one, please?
I use 주시겠어요 often to show a little more politeness than the standard 주세요.
It makes you sound more natural, even though 주세요 is totally fine too.
I use it everywhere: at the store, in Seoul taxis, in restaurants, etc.
i.e. 이태원에 가주시겠어요? = Can you go to Itaewon, please?
Here's a good link that describes the forms of this expression: www.morninglands.com/request-and-assisting-%EC%95%84%EC%96%B4-%EC%A3%BC%EC%84%B8%EC%9A%94%EC%A3%BC%EC%8B%9C%EA%B2%A0%EC%96%B4%EC%9A%94/
I hope this helps. ^^
The pancakes and the mochi have eggs s part of their ingredients. Actually a lot of the cooked food there that seems vegan contain eggs.
Yeah, Marie talks about that in the video, but there are ways to ask what is in the ingredients. But even if the ingredients are vegan, maybe the cooking surface uses the same oil that a meat product was cooked on, so it's not perfect. This video is meant to give an idea of the types of things you can eat in Myeongdong, but there's no guarantee you'll get something that's 100% vegan-friendly. But at least trying is a start. ^^
thanks for the reply, have a great day!
